Disclaimers + Show Spoiler + The following contains a serious yet whimsical analysis of the bans handed out from the TL mods since the inception of the TL Bot auto posting. Some immaterial omissions/ adjustments were made to massage the data for proper analysis. I claim no affiliation to the afflictions and duress caused by the mods nor any that arises from reading this blog due to painful memories. I do not advocate any attacks on mods that are showcased in the highlight reel on this blog. Instead, a statue should be commissioned for the service of Hot_Bid.
I was recently temp banned (first FTW!) on TL due to a "bad post" (which I assert to be justifiable to the context of the idiocy posted but that is my opinion). That got me to thinking, are some of them power crazy?? Are they out to torture the denizens of TL? Is the EvilTeletubby (who banned me... u mofo) really evil??? I need to get down to the absolute truth that is TL banning.
Only one place awaits me..... the Automated Ban List thread! A trove of treasure that holds the secret that I so desire. I went in and I gained a new found understanding of TL!
Bad eggs of TL
It might come as no shock that many posters on TL are BM and make silly posts. But do you know that since the auto TL bot was setup, there has been about 27,400 bans/ temps handed out?
35% (9.6k) of that is perm ban while 65% (17.8k) is temp ban! This would suggest that there are a LOT of infractions happening on TL! This is about 3.8 perms per day and 7 temp per day!
It seems that either the posters has gotten nasty or the mods are going crazy with their banning with time!

Is this the sign that as more people get into TL (due to SC2's popularity), the overall posting quality becomes worse? When we look closer at the before and after SC2 (using the beta month of Feb 2010 as the cut off point), we can indeed see that the bans increased dramatically!
It was about 70 bans a month prior to Feb 2012 but now it has increased to about 720 bans a month! TEN-FOLD INCREASE! Unfortunately, I do not have a general sense of the population to conclude if the BM has increased with population or not.
You shall pay your dues!
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/vOYK2.jpg)
By analysing user post count at the time of banning, we observe that most of the perm bans are very low post counts - mostly due to blatant rule breaking. 60% are 10 posts and below while 80% perms are 100 posts and below.
When we look at temp bans, it is also interesting to note that we have the same trend i.e. 40% are 100 posts and below. However, as per the previous analysis, without a good analysis or time series of the population along with the bans, we are unable to further conclude if veterans are better behaving or given more leniency (although this is within the spirit of TL to give more respect to those who are more tenured).
See you later

Most of the temp bans are 2 day bans (which is what I got ) making up 58% of the temps followed by 7 days and lower as it goes higher. As you might notice, there are two odd bans (1 day and 3 days)
Achievement unlocked - Solo Duo >>1 day ban + Show Spoiler +SGL]GnR was just temp banned for 1 day by R1CH. That account was created on 2010-07-28 03:14:19 and had 45 posts. Reason: Don't repost something that we've stated doesn't belong here. >>3 day ban + Show Spoiler +Saros.Tester was just Temp banned for 3 days by PoP. That account was created on 2005-03-20 23:12:09 and had 7 posts. Reason: Fucking imposter.
Even more worth noting, there are only three extreme bans! The story behind them seems to be very intriguing as well!
Achievement unlocked - The long road home >>110 day ban + Show Spoiler +clazziquai was just temp banned for 110 days by SonuvBob. That account was created on 2007-10-07 13:34:57 and had 4924 posts. Reason: By request. If you're reading this clazz, close TL and go study. :p >>212 week ban + Show Spoiler +irfer was just temp banned for 212 weeks by R1CH. That account was created on 2010-03-16 19:50:20 and had 1 posts. Reason: First post requesting hacks in a 4 year old thread. Banned 1 day per day bumped. >>80000 day ban! + Show Spoiler +the PUNisher was just temp banned for 80000 days by SonuvBob. That account was created on 2008-08-19 12:54:00 and had 14 posts. Reason: Writing "bonjwa".
Seems that alluding to Bonjwa will bring down the temp hammer so hard that you can be banned for generations from TL! >< As for the 212 week ban, OUCH! So much pain so much crazy on that! Is irfer still part of the community? Will he come back after 4 years?
Appreciate any comments by the banning mods on their view for those bans!
Shinigamis descend
How can analysis of banning be complete without looking at the people who gives it like it's hot? They are the reason TL is moderately moderate with most of the extreme posters disciplined or exiled!

Achievement unlocked - TL Hammer Hall of Fame Congrats to our top banners! Amazing hard work up to 2k bans!

Achievement unlocked - You shall not post! With that amazing 80k day ban, there is no doubt SonuvBob is the undisputed champion of temp ban days handed out! Lower down the ladder are Manifesto7 and EvilTeletubby (MY HYPOTHESIS IS CONFIRMED! HE IS AN EVIL BASTERD!) with ONLY 16k and 12k days of temps!

Achievement unlocked - HeadShot! Another facet that interests me is which mod is the strictest (or rather gives you death but most of the time ignores you). It surprises no one that our handy dandy TL bot cleans up TL of advertisement with his fuzzy logic and unyielding ban hammer at 100% Kill Ratio! Coming close is TheMango, R1CH and Rekrul! Congrats guys! Will appreciate your input on this amazing achievement on TL!
Achievement unlocked - Hot Hand Bid!
The last award goes to our cool photobomb champion. The amazing monster kills that he dishes out to those unknowing rule benders! In two days from May 1 2010, he unleashed hell upon the bad apples, achieving three amazing streaks of 58, 58 and 81 bans/ temps in a row! He was only interrupted by Plexa for his first streak followed by intrigue and lastly Plexa and Zatic for his last streak.
Other noteworthy attemptees are Liquid`Meat and Manifesto7 with 56 and 34 kill streaks each in Feb 2008 and Feb 2011 respectively! Great job guys!
End of the day
It was a blast looking at the datamine that is TL banlist! I really do enjoy looking at the ban reasons for shit and giggles for crazy things people posts! If I have one wish, I really hope that the bot can show the permalink to the posts causing the ban as having a context to the funny tidbits will make my read much sweeter everyday.

really nice writeup the mango has permed such high perm ratio p_p

Fantastic analysis. You should also check out the ABL Discussion thread (from TL Community) more often, we talk about (others') bans 24/7 there.
|
should be featured on blogs

Haha lol Interesting figures. Never thought the actual number behind it.

Nice blog! A link to the post responsible for the ban would really be nice. I'm also wondering about stuff like "most bans on one page" or " most bans per posts in a thread" etc.

Wow I'm really one of the only posters to have been banned that many times while having that many posts! That's quite an achievement, not really a good one though .

I just recently "discovered" the ABL thread so a lot of catching up to the hottest topics. I see many pages so I can be assured of mucho reading pleasure. I usually get my fix from the Closed Thread because people make the most ridiculous threads at times which are a good read.

It will be quite difficult to mine the permalink unless they display it. My current extraction methodology can't handle that - the technology is not there yet
Most of the time, when the mods ban the users, they may not quote the banned posts so it is not as exciting nor can I trace the fun :p

most of the perm bans are "previously banned users" though, which are usually caught in the 0-10 post range.

This site got a lot more popular in 2010 because of Starcraft 2. Just the influx of new BM posters that caused the increase in bans.

Cool idea for a blog. I quite enjoyed it

All you need to refute the "more bad posters" myth is to open up some threads from 2007 and earlier. Some of them are absolutely atrocious by modern TL standards. You can say the harsher moderation is due to greater anonymity or a greater "need" for stricter standards, but I don't think either is really justified.

Haha, pretty interesting :D Thanks for your work.

You can say the harsher moderation is due to greater anonymity or a greater "need" for stricter standards, but I don't think either is really justified. i'd argue that back then, it was definitely OK for people to just post whatever they want. back then, TL wasn't the same site as it is now. it used to be smaller community where non-koreans (and koreans too) could gather together and talk about BW, etc. i mean, it was a clan site, not the great central hub of SC2 that it is today.
basically, different kinds of sites should have different standards. back then, it was much more casual. now that TL is so popular, and everyone comes here for SC2 news (and DOTA2 as well), it needs to be professional. and posters contribute or detract from that sense of professionalism. that's why higher standards are needed.

I think at least one of these was ban roulette?

This is a nice example of Benford's Law in action.
Benford's law, also called the first-digit law, states that in lists of numbers from many (but not all) real-life sources of data, the leading digit is distributed in a specific, non-uniform way. According to this law, the first digit is 1 about 30% of the time, and larger digits occur as the leading digit with lower and lower frequency, to the point where 9 as a first digit occurs less than 5% of the time. This distribution of first digits is the same as the widths of gridlines on the logarithmic scale. Benford's law also gives the expected distribution for digits beyond the first, which approach a uniform distribution as the digit place goes to the right.

Ban roulette? Context on this pls.... Anyway, that ban streak was continuous across two days from Hot_Bid so actually the streak would have been close to 200 bans if not for the interrupting bans by the other mods.

Ahh.. sounds about right.. But studying the ban reason is quite a pain because the reason is non standard so its near impossible to automate it... Manual eyeball will be a pain ><

yes this is entertaining and such, but what I want to know is who the hell are the three people that got perma banned at over 15k (and were they self inflicted)?
