Being myself lands me a big tasty bite of a burger

The other day I was walking around Vancouver, and I was super hungry but I didn’t know where to go. I refuse to eat fast food, and didn’t know where a cheap semi-healthy option was available.

So as I’m walking around thinking about where to eat, I pass an outdoor patio to some restaurant and at the far end of the patio is this couple, just about finished their meal. I can’t say what possessed me, but after first walking past them, I turned around, tapped the guy on the shoulder and asked him if I could have a bite of his burger.

In the back of my mind was this voice telling me about how rude I was, and how I should bail, blah blah blah. But I was in the middle of the moment, and I was just going with it.

So the guy stares at me saying nothing, while the woman laughs out loud. He wipes his mouth with his napkin and very calmly asks me, “you fucking serious?”. I smiled, and replied with something like, “well you seemed to be enjoying it, and I’ve never ate here before so I wanted to know what the food is like”.

So he looks over at his gf or wife or whoever she is, who’s still laughing, and shrugs and hands me his burger. I have to tell you, it was a pretty good damn burger. But then he goes on to tell me that it was like 20 bucks and that ended that.

After chatting to them for a little while, I headed on my way. It seems to me that when you’re open and honest people respond well. I wasn’t trying to be anybody; I just legitimately wanted to know what his burger tasted like. And he could recognize that and responded accordingly.

Either that or I was extremely lucky he didn’t spit in my face.

20 dollar burger?

Either he's pulling your leg, clean off the hip, or this place is crazy.

What is this restaurant, anyhow? We must know...

Zatic and I went to a place in Manhattan that had $20 burgers so I don't think it's that impossible.

Best burger I ever had in my life was at Minetta Tavern in Manhattan. Black Label Burger, 26 bucks.

And I definitely wouldn't let a stranger have a bite of it, lol.

That's what I think too. Still comes off as rude though.

grats on the free bite I guess.

Well, in Canada it's no impressive.

Do it in Hackney or Harlem.

$20 for a burger is pretty normal, if it's a proper restaurant burger.

That's a pretty random thing to do, and I would have definitely said no and told you honestly that I think it's weird as fuck, and you should either get your own or get lost.

I had it too, it was a solid burger. The meat was really high quality, and the simplicity of the burger helped delivering the message.

Pearl's in SF is probably my favourite burger place I've had in America.

For less fancy burgers, Shakeshack and In'N'Out are both pretty good too.

The guy who gave you the bite sounds friendly.

I like this story but if you want to convince me its not luck you have to do it again. If i was the guy with the burger.. well it all depends on my mood. I have no problem saying no to you and I have no problem saying yes. You have to convince me you deserve it and that you're hygiene is not going to get me sick

I think it really helped that the woman was there and was finding the situation funny. If she was offended then things would have turned out differently.

lol that was definitely a dick move on your part (whether or not you realize it) to interrupt his date and eat his food, but I'm not 100% surprised that he went with the flow and gave you a bite. I guess since you probably didn't appear like a random homeless guy or act mean (just naive/ innocent), it wasn't the absolute worst way you could have presented yourself.

I wouldn't try that again though.

Sounds like a nice guy, you were kind of a dick though. Some people seem to think as long as they are nice or have good enough intentions they aren't being a dick when they are. While it's not as bad as the mean /rude + being a dick it's still not really a good thing imo.

"In the back of my mind was this voice telling me about how rude I was, and how I should bail, blah blah blah. But I was in the middle of the moment, and I was just going with it."

Another way to put it would be "but I decided to say fuck it and be rude anyways". Sure the guy let you do it and it ended up being no big deal, but did he really want to do it? and if it was actually expensive your bite depending on how big it is could have been a dollars worth or more. One symptom of rude people is they really only consider their perspective for example: "well if I was in his position and someone like me came up with good intentions and asked this way I'd be fine with it". When he said "are you fucking serious" would have been a good time to apologize and just ask how the burger is as opposed to continuing to ask for a bite, you put him in awkward spot and yeah pretty much forced him to share his burger even though he likely didn't want to because his GF found it funny. He either has to do something he doesn't really want to do or look like a humorless fatty jerk.

Maybe I'm analyzing too much too but it seems you were more worried about the guy spitting in your face (you getting a personal inconvenience) rather then you coming off as an overly imposing person.(even though that's what you were doing).

Your story and then the responses that followed about those expensive burger places that sell the best burgers made me remember that episode from How I Met Your Mother where the guy is looking for the legendary burger place. Sure enough someone already posted it haha.

The blog title should really read: "Being a dick lands me a big tasty bite of a burger." Although if you were really being yourself, unfortunately the conclusion necessarily would be: You= dick
