This list is obviously highly subjective, it would be different in a month I expect. I also haven't watched enough movies to make a perfect list. I could'nt put every movie I love, but every movie on this list is in my opinion absolutely great. I'll provide a short description for each movie. So, 30-21 :
30. Ninotchka, Lubitsch :
Ninotchka is a special envoy from the USSR sent to Paris to retrieve the diamonds of a russian duchess. But a charming count has decided to stop her and...
My favorite comedy, truly hilarious and charming.
29. Barry Lyndon, Kubrick
Kubrick is a great director with out a doubt, and here's my favourite. Every single of his movie is great, but this one shines thanks to its photography, interesting script, wonderful music and overall beauty.
28. Hana-Bi, Takeshi Kitano
The extremely moving story of a retired policeman, his wounded friend and his dying wife. A trip through the beauties of Japan, great slow pacing and acting.
27. Holy Motors, Leos Carax
I recently saw this in theaters and was blown away. I might be underestimating it, for the acting, the directing, the photo really made that strange tale about cinema and acting work for me.
26. La Dolce Vita, Fellini
The only Fellini I've seen, and I was blown away by the life coming from it. A young journalist wants to become a writer but squanders his opportunities away because of the appeal of "la dolce Vita". Wonderful picture of Rome and of some Italians.
25. STALKER, Andrei Tarkovski
For some reason, this slow-paced (or more precisely Tarkovski-paced) SF philosophical tale is often recommanded on TL. Its depth and beauty deserves it.
24. Throne of blood, Akira Kurosawa
The japanese masters adapts MacBeth in the japanese Middle-Age. The very smart modifications, the directing and Toshiro Mifune make for a great film.
23. City Lights, Charlie Chaplin
My favourite Chaplin, if only for the beautiful love story that is told between the funny gags.
22. Grand Illusion, Jean Renoir
A humanist anti-war movie that tells the story of French prisonners during WW1. Beautiful. The acting in particular stands out : Pierre Fresnay and Eric von Stroheim are an incredible duo.
21. Sunset Boulevard, Billy Wilder
A young broke scenarist meets an old crazy silent-movie star and her mysterious butler and accepts to write a scenario for her return... Dark, emotionnal film on stardom, dellusions of grandeur and madness.
