Yar!
I am looking for some help looking for new cheapish earbuds/ general wisdom on what to look for in earbuds if I eventually want something nicer.
Price: ~$30-40 Use: Running / podcasts mostly, but with my laptop's poor speakers it would be nice if these were pretty decent all around.
I used to use these : Sony MDR-75 with 9mm high-sensitivity driver. I got them for $30ish originally then bought a subsequent pair for 25$ later on. I found the sound quality better than similar pairs in the vague price range.
Music wise I listen to Queens of the Stone Age, some punk, alternative. Classical music isn't a huge concern with these buds.
I would greatly appreciate any suggestions. Right now I am looking at DREX 61ip buds. Seem to have good reviews and similar stats though it is about 3 DB less sensitive.
Stats of each headphone I posted: + Show Spoiler + MDR-76 Audio Driver Unit : 9mm diameter, dome type(CCAW adopted) Frequency Response : 6-24,000Hz Impedance : 16 ohms at 1kHz Sensitivity (db) : 103dB/mW Speaker Diaphragm : PET Type : Closed, Dynamic
+ Show Spoiler + DR-EX61IP Specs
Driver Unit: 9mm, closed, dynamic, dome type Magnet Type: Neodymium Frequency Response: 5Hz - 23,000Hz Impedance: 16 ohms Sensitivity (db): 100dB/mW Power Handling Capacity: 100mW(IEC) Cord Length: 47 1/4 in. (1.2m)
~ Generally, I have tried to look at a few guides online regarding what matters. What I have gleaned is that the number of drivers is the most important stat, followed by how low the range is, then sensitivity or Impedance (not sure).

For the headphones, ignore the stats they won't help you much.
At 30 or 40 bucks, its all the same. Buy whichever ones you like .
Seriously, its all the same.
If the problem is breaking headphones, I suggest investing in a strong pair of Shure In ear headphones that sport the replaceable cord for the earbuds.
20 bucks will replace the cord and you get to keep using very nice sounding phones.
I wouldn't use them for sports though, for sports you should buy a set of sport headphones if you sweat a lot since the water resistance will keep them working for longer.
To enjoy music, buy a nice pair and you will save money in the long run. I have a pair of Shures I have owned for 3 years and they still work perfectly. They cost me 130 dollars over 3 years.

At 40$ you can just buy any pair, there really isnt going to be a lot of difference between any of those

The best pair of earbuds I've ever owned is some skull candy pair I got from my brother. It's one of the few pairs that have good bass that I've used.

I feel so much pain for your ears. Seriously, they must not know what nice sound is.

While I might have your attention, if I had more money to spare around christmas what kind of Headphones or earbuds would you "invest" in (in the sense that the fashion thread recommends spending good money for good shoes).

Anything that allows you to swap cables. So Shure SE115 is pretty good for sub 150 dollar range.
If you want over head headphones to invest in, you should get anything that has a swappable cable and earpads.
And never buy Monster or Beats Audio. Both terribly terribly overpriced.
Bose is ok but they dont have replaceable parts. So once they break thats it. Usually the speakers in the headphones dont break but instead a cable will fray or give out. So replacing that part is for sure a Must.

JVC Marshmallows for good sound all around, with decent bass, that is inexpensive

I always see poor people wearing beats/monster... There's a reason for that
Budgetwise, JVC won't let you down.
