Hey Guys DJ Wilma here,
For those of you who don't know I'm a Protoss player, so if this thought is stupid let me know. After watching many TvT battles over the years, I have really wondered if the Thor is the much needed rook, in the TvT positional chess. Its pretty decent at holding its own in a head to head fight, but could its anti-air capabilities help you gain that extra step when positioning.
I understand that the actual damage output of the Thor's anti-air isn't too high, but with the greater range than the vikings, would it not help you take air dominance?
Plus when getting into position, using a couple of Thors in your army composition will leave you less open to destruction, when caught off guard by an enemy troop.
This is the part I have no idea if I'm right or not, but wouldn't it also discourage your opponent from doing an aLive marine suicide to destroy your contain, as he would never get his medivac able to drop all the marines and sufficiently kill your tanks.
Its just a thought, if you have any reason for or against this, I want to know, as the Thor I feel is under used in TvT
Much Luv

I personally use Thors when the viking wars begin. It means I can poke forward with my vikings and retreat if i have to but if they poke then my thors will do some nice damage as the vikings stack. Thors are also good against bio as its more forgiving and they can be positioned in front of your tanks so that they get an extra shot of on those marauders. 3-4 Thors is usually the highest for me in TvT and only in said situations.

I used to rely on thors a lot but well positioned tanks generally reduce even large thor armies to tears when you need to pass through a choke or assault a base or if the situation otherwise forces you to line up, wait etc. At least offensively. Never really used them for defence, although they're roxxorz against banshees (just like mutas). I suppose they could be good in a mix if somebody transplanted a typical TvP or TvZ build. Problem being that you really don't want to be overinvesting in them if dude has a lot of tanks. Making thors is also asking for battlecruisers and a battlecruiser owes a thor 1v1 so hard.
But you make a great point, thors are underused in TvT and need exploring. Thanks. I'll have an eye when watching replays and VODs.

Unless you're going full out mech (which is atm inferior to marine tank) then you spend more time at your factories producing thors instead of tanks. Which in turn usually means lower tanks for the meching player, and being caught out of position against 3-3 stimmed marines will spell gg ;/

I'm thinking of changing to random, to see how critical every little move is in TvT.... cuz as you can see, I don't know too much

Progamers already do this. Mvp has often used a thor or two to bust tank lines, and terrans in general use thors to try to regain air dominance if they fall behind somehow.

Thors are bad, mmk. I think they are good for helping to win the viking war, and really not much else (maybe early game cheese?).

Its too big and as a unit sucks.

Cannon rush sure but sixpool? I mean, I once barely got a thor out of a blazing base overrun by zerglings and still won the game but normally thors aren't good vs lings unless you surround them with a cloud of SCVs.
