I remember when SC2 came out and there was the big divide in terms of how people felt about it.
Some people said it was great and others preferred Brood War. KeSPA vs Blizzard, so on so forth.
Many BW progamers swapped to SC2. Not just young B-teamers starved for attention but also old legends who had perhaps "washed out" to become glorified benchwarmers -- BoxeR, NaDa. Proleague's moving towards SC2 as well, though I love Brood War so much. OGN is having "Legends Matches" with the old big names, smacking of a retirement of the OSL as well. I know China is hosting the OSL-ish tournament and that's really exciting, but I feel almost as if it won't be the same kind of excitement.
A few days ago I read the news about NaDa's retirement. It scared me at first that these old legends would be leaving even the new games which are supposedly (and arguably) easier... it's a common opinion that you have very few options after being a progamer since your only experience is in gaming.
And that was true, and it's still true, but today when I read that NaDa's going to help create a new SC2 team I only felt relief. I know that lots of people have retired from BW before so it's not as if it hasn't been done before but I'm so relieved that the "first generation" of Korean progamers are really transitioning and creating a new environment for new progamers. A lot of foreigners transitioned into stuff like poker which is really neat but it didn't really help the survivability of starcraft.
But now it's like the apprentice taking over the business and beginning to take on apprentices of their own, in a different sense than being a hyung on the same team or coaching a team. To help create a team, to foster a new generation... I'm truly relieved.
