Hello. I bring you my latest series.

HOSPITAL BLOGS

Brought to you from the UCSF ICU/Floor, they will portray me as i have rather major surgery, probably will be in a halo for a week, then will finish it off with a second procedure. 3-4 days later I'll be discharged.

My rant on my medical issues can be found here: http://www.teamliquid.net/blogs/viewblog.php?id=211684

I think a lot of what happens in a hospital or after a major surgery isn't terribly well known. I'll try to keep a list of what happens at each time. Being at UCSF, a world class hospital, I'll try and compare it to my prior experiences at other facilities and hospitals. I'll be on really strong morphine tomorrow, and probably the day after, so things may be a little bit off. I'll have a rather long break.

For those of you interested, the surgeons plan on removing bone at the C7 T1 juncture and tilt back my head. My spinal fusion has pseudoarthritis at that juncture, and has fallen forward, contributing to poor posture. From there the two surgeons will pull my head back up. In hte process they will retool my entire spinal fusion, removing screws from low in the fusion, due to the extremely poor placement of the first procedure. In the middle they will fix poorly inserted screws, and they will pull back the head at the top. The surgeon will attempt to affix at C5, and if necessary use a halo to stabilize until the anterior procedure can occur in six days. If not necessary a cervical collar will be used. If inadequate fixture can be achieved, they will fuse from the top of my existing fusion (c5) to T2. I really want to avoid this, but there is around a ten percent chance of it happening.

Around 5 % of being in halo for 4 weeks post op.

My second procedure is anterior. They will remove a frontal plate, and insert a new one bridging the juncture.

They will take bone marrow from the hip in the middle of this. They'll try to fix my neck scar which is big and inflamed.

Anyways, it'll be a while guys. Things should work out, I should be able to resume lifting, I'll go to UCSD in relatively good shape, etc. I'll bring you part 1 as soon as I am coherent post-op.

Best of luck pal. I just applied to UC Davis for medical school - crossing my fingers. I'd love to come out there for school.

I read some of your previous blog. Was it a genetic problem that caused the necessary back surgery? That doctor is an idiot. If there is one thing I've learned in my years as a student, you don't leave something until it reaches the threshold to fix it. If he knew you were approaching a point where your curvature would be deemed abnormal, why the fuck would you wait until it gets there to look into it?

Anyhow, keep us updated. Hope it all goes well!

Edit: did you decide what color to paint your car?

Best of luck >___< that sounds extremely scary...but yeah, world-class doctors, hope everything goes as well as it can.

So you won't actually be knocked out but just really drugged up? Eek, that's even scarier O_O though tbh as you probably know, problem with being knocked out is that the doctors have to worry about your breathing in that case as well, but it still sounds extremely scary to have this kind of surgery performed while you're semi-conscious...

No, I have general anestheisa. I'll just have a lot of pain after, hence narcotics.

Yeah, klippel feil syndrome. Genetic.

Previous doctor just got sued for malpractice, which lead UCSF to take over orthopedics for oakland childrens.

Best of luck mate! Just finished my night shift at the hospital and stumbled over your blog =) Is there any chance that you're going to share some computed tomography or other forms of medical imaging? Keep up the spirit and I'll keep my fingers crossed!

Ah, okay just making sure. I recently had a procedure as well (MUCH more minor) and they only gave me morphine and a local anesthetic so I was wondering about that ><

And wow, that's some serious stuff, so depressing that you had that doctor and when you needed all the help you could have gotten what with the congenital disorder :/

My surgery was not as big of a deal as yours, just 7 bones in the wrist broken, but as to morphine:

I am 6 foot, 170 pounds. (~180cm, I don't remember kg) and the morphine kept me asleep for 8 hours, and then affected me for several more hours with drowsiness.
Waking up from morphine is like waking up hung over without a headache, it is quite a curious experience, and I actually remember it with fondness oddly enough.

Gl with your operation, hopefully it goes well.
