Okay this is basically rant because i just bought SWTOR which comes with 30 days of ingame time but apparently you need to buy even more time before it will let you actually play the game. This is really ridiculous in my opinion because i bought the game figuring id play it for 30 ,days and see if i liked it enough to set up a longer term plan. but the game apparently makes you set up either a subscription or use a game card before you can actually play the game (regardless of if you have any free time available). so basically in addition to paying 40 dollars for the game you have to pay even more just to access any of it. I guess I could maybe use a credit card tand then cancel it but it'll possibly charge me immediately and I really don''t want to give out my credit card info if I can avoid it. so I'll probably just go to besbuy and buy a 60 day card and hope that I like a game that I spent 70 dollars into without even knowing how much I like it and basically committing to paying to 90 days.( there's probably 30 day cards somewhere but I'm too lazy and I have coupons and stuff for best buy.
so basically if you want to play the game realize it'll cost you more than 40 dolars.
it actually says this in little words buried in a paragraph(that no one prob ever reads) but I assumed that since the game comes with 30 days that it would actually let you play. app not.
oh well here's hoping it's worth it.
p.s. I've never done any subscription games before but I'm pretty sure this isn't standard practice. If it is then its less ridiculous but still annoying
Search "TORTANIC" and try to return your game before wasting any more time. I'm not kidding. If you want to play a subscription MMO with no players then go ahead but if I were you I would return that asap

k thnks for the adivice. but I don't want this to turn into a debate about whether the game's any good or not. I'm just mad about one thing the company did that I think is stupid and doesn't have anything to do with whether the game is actually any good.
about your talk about it having no players I figured that I'd at least be able to enjoy the sroty in the first 30 days then if it was boring after that I'd stop playing.
Just an fyi every subscription based MMo does this. What you can to do is buy more time, but cancel immediately. You still have your free 30 days and you won't be charged 15$ a month if you don't like the game. It's stupid but they hope you aren't smart enough to do this.
not really. Eve is alright and has a small community here on TL. Make an account on SWTORs forum and ask how you can subscribe with your 30 day free pass.

okay thanks. Ive never actually played a paying mmo before(other than trying wow at a friends house) so I wasn't sure how it actually works. thanks for the advice.

k thnks. I don't know about eve it seems like too much economics for me but I'll look into it. the problem is the 30 days isnt seperate its built into the install so I don't actually think there's anyway to do it without getting a seperate card or using a credit card.
1) Yes, it is not uncommon that you have to set up a subscription before you can begin playing. No, you will not be charged until your free time is up. You can immediately cancel it without any side effects.
This is actually allowed to happen? Here I thought blizzard had done a bad job letting wow go to hell but shit
That was fun, I stopped playing the game shortly after that patch. It's dying off as we speak now apparently.
Ah yes, the pain and suffering of the only modern game engine that makes powerpoint look like Crysis. That's ignoring the completely loathsome endgame.

SWTOR was an ok single player RPG.
Pretty much this. Wish Bioware would have just developed another single player KOTOR. I think it would have been so much better. Take the game back.
Fyi you won't get charged until the 30 days is over (at least I wasn't). Right now I'm fighting trying to get signed back in to cancel the sub I thought I had already cancelled =/ Had a mobile authenticator which I deleted off my phone, now I can't log back so yay

It isn't standard practice. It's bioware trying to force people to keep playing their dieing game.

It is standard practice. Yes, it's retarded but it's standard. You have to setup a subscription and will not be charged until the free time is up.
@OP: If you want to play the game make sure you roll on one of the high pop servers (there's basically only 1 high pop server per region per type). Since they recently introduced server transfers - just roll on the servers which are the targets for the char transfers (look at their forum to find out which one).

I'm not 100% sure if it's standard practice, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was... but what I do know is that they have done it since release.
Plus, I think subscription models and all that stuff is EAs work in the end, but that's just a hunch
If you read carefully they don't charge you for an extra 30 days, you just need to add a CC to activate subscription. You can cancel anytime in the first 30 days and it will only freeze your account once those are done.
I knew it was decent SP but really hoped it would end up as a decent mmo also. Quit some time ago (right before 1.1 I think). Was fun but too empty.
