The first time I smelled "miso soup" I thought that it was straight up human SHIT.

It tastes good, but the smell is downright horrible... my wife loves it though *shrugs*

Most Koreans I know of my generation are only Master's level. The parents are *sometimes* Grandmasters, but you reeeaally don't see it often.

I remember when I was a kid, my friend would have a counter with a refrigerator behind it that was filled with Shikhe 90% of the time. We dubbed it the Shikhe Bar ^_^

I always found dukbboggi really spicy, although I have a much stronger tolerance now than when I was a kid (I avoided it so much back then, haha). Kimchi was never a problem, though (partially due to Kimchi not being quite has hot temperature-wise).

Also, people who hate tofu (you know, the ones who've only seen it and haven't actually tried it?) need to take a faceful of dwenjiangjigae (not going to bother trying to spell it phonetically any better than this >.<) with tofu. It's soooo good (if I had to choose between it and bulgogi, I would definitely take the bulgogi - it's still good, though).

Will be trying to cook some of these this summer. Might as well try Korean food! (It's either that or sandwiches/ramen.) T__T

Nomnomnom, makes me hungry just reading about some of these. :O

...wait, there are people who think miso soup smells bad? o_____O

Looks like if I ever visit Korea, I'll stick to Korean BBQ, bronze newb reporting.

Most of those things described..oye meng.. no way.

Great read though! 5/5.

Must be a strange miso.

That must be some ancient miso because miso soup itself is relatively light.

I think the poster meant the Korean version of miso, which is denjang jjigae or its brother from hell, cheonggukjang

You seem to be missing lots of North Korean food D:

Is it terrible that when I reread my post I felt like "North Korean food" was an oxymoron?

Doenjang-gguk, doenjang soup, can be very light... generally it is. It CAN be very heavy even to the point of it just becoming a curry like rice topping, but it is generally like miso but richer. A good analogy might be sour cream vs creme fraiche.

Cheonggukjang is DELISH. Usually I have it stewed with lots of ginger and at a relatively low temp for a while to get rid of the majority of the... fragrance xD

You OBVIOUSLY have no idea how delicious shit smelling stuff is. xD

But seriously, brie cheese? Shepard's pie? Any country wurst? Cmon, I'm sure you like some terrible smelling food, you just don't think about it because you associate the fragrance, in the moment, with pure goodness!

I've only had korean food once, when I was in LA. Me and some friends went to a korean BBQ and they had this little tofu dish that came with the meats. It was SO good, definitely the most tasty thing they had.

I wish all tofu tasted like that, I'd eat it all the time.

I got to say, Korean food is in my top 3 ethnic cuisines. I love how they cook the meats. And cochijan (is that how you spell it?) is so delicious.

are you referring to the pepper paste? Then it's written 고추장 and it's pronounced "go-chu-jang."

Yes, that's the one. I find it so good with meat and vegetables and it's just spicy enough without ruining the dish. Quite cheap too for the quantity I can buy in Asian shops. Well right now I've got about 700gr of beef marinating in a bowl of soya sauce and gochujang to be fried in about 4 hours ;D

순두부찌개(Soon-doo-boo-JJi-ge) - Pretty famous dish even among foreigners, I believe. Spicy ass soft-tofu soup with scallions, eggs, seafood, etc. One of my sister's favorite dishes. Not much else to say here, just try it.

You know, I spent a year in Korea and never had this soup.... until I got back to the states and went to a Korean restaurant. Tastes great though! Really, anything spicy is a win in my book :D

Also, ♥ Kimchi!
