There were a few other jobs...we had to dig up and replace their septic tank...power wash their roof...and put in a few sprinkler systems...overall I STILL think my dad got a hell of a deal...because they could have made his life hell.

Problem is, you really can't sue someone who doesn't have any money. Not to mention the legal implications of hiring a contracter who is unlicenced, in experienced, and uninsured. That's just as stupid. And stupidly leaving your car sit next to a tree that you're having cut down wouldn't help you in court much either.

Yeah, you are right.
My dad had something like $25,000 owed to the state of California for unpaid child support that just accumulated over years. Because of this, he couldn't do anything in California...he was scared to get pulled over for fear there would be a warrant out for his arrest. What you point out, that I think is true, is that there is a large difference between owing the state money and owing money to someone that sues you. A guy could be taken behind the courthouse and fisted for 12 hours by the governor of the state for not paying a $100 speeding ticket...but never even think of paying debts to a fellow citizen. I guess I always think of how I would feel in another person's spot. I could never sit idly knowing that I destroyed someone's car.

Well, you should also never hire an unlicensed uninsured random guy to do something like tree removal. There's a reason why professionals charge so much money, because they actually know what the fuck they're doing. There's really a lesson here about what happens when you hire someone totally unqualified just so you can save a few hundred dollars. That's like something Basil Fawlty would do.
