Hello everyone! I hope you are all doing spectacular on this wonderful Sunday, or Monday, depending on where you are!
I have just recently finished my newest piece of music, Spire, which took me over 45 hours of working time. It also contains over 200 automations, 130 mixer states, and hours of sound designing outside the project file. I also recorded over 20 original samples for this piece, including things such as keys jingling, water bottles, aluminum cans, etc.
SPIRE 2012
This piece marks a big turning point for me as it is my first collegiate piece of music. I just performed this last Tuesday at my music university where it was well received. I eventually plan on continuing to blend acoustic and electronic timbres, and this summer I will write a string quartet with track, and eventually before I graduate, a full symphony with electronics.
So, I hope if this interests you, you will take a listen and tell me if you enjoy it! Or critique it! Also, if anyone has any questions about how certain sounds were made, I keep no secrets!

Gorgeous. I aspire to write music of this quality, though frankly I haven't the skill nor the temperament. Really liked the dissonance around 2:15 (I find now that it's repeated throughout).
Can I request a mellow break down? I'm a sucker for a regular snare in 4/4. Heading to your other stuff on sound cloud right now!
|
It sounds promising, but I felt like there were a lot of things added just for the sake of being able to say, 'there are over x samples, y mixer states', yadda yadda. I think the tune could have been a lot better if it was just a little simpler!

I'm glad you enjoyed it! I'm sure you do, you just haven't tapped into your potential yet. I believe we all have the abilities to create and play music, but like anything else it takes practice!
Mellow breakdown? As in a part of a song that is a mellow break? Or an analytic break down of my piece on a relaxed level? I'm going to assume you meant the second, so sure!
The piece is sort of in a ternary form, which is; A B A'. B is a contrasting section in a different key, A is longer the first time and comes back in a modified form to the A'. The tonal scheme of this piece is as follows, it starts in Bb minor, modulates to B major at the first large moment during the second half of A, then as it enters the B section, it modulates to G# minor, the relative of B. It stays in g sharp minor until the recapitulation which it modulates back to Bb minor, and ends the piece where it started. So..
Bb minor - B major - G# minor - Bb minor.
hopefully that's what you were looking for.

Simple is the absolute opposite of what I am trying to do at the moment. I am trying to match the calculated harmony and form of classical music with contemporary levels of sound design. I appreciate the feedback, and I generally don't mention the amount of work I do for these. I figured since I'm trying to show it off, I might as well let people know the amount of work required for a final product like this.

Due to beeing unable to formulate my praise in a more elaborate fashion let me just say that I really liked it! ^-^
Listening to the rest of your music as well~

Pretty awesome. Should forward that to Blizzard so they can incorporate parts of it to Protoss in game music in HotS.
edit: that would also go very well while playing EVE.
|
I liked it. Some of the parts seemed a little TOO heavy on the effects, but overall I really enjoyed listening to it... Oh yeah and I don't know shit about music or music theory, so keep that in mind lol.

It's pretty nice and chill. The different textures are good, and you keep them short enough so that they don't grate on the listener.
My main critique is that I wish that the instrument that carried the melody wasn't as omnipresent throughout the piece. I think it'd really benefit from a break from that particular sound for an extended period of time, because otherwise the piece feels a bit too bland/predictable. Especially something to consider if you're using ternary form, since a different instrument voicing the melody for the B part would make it feel more distinct.

I am ecstatic that you enjoyed it, I hope you will continue to follow me throughout my career! No need for fancy words, a simple "really liked it" suffices quite well. :D

Haha, that would be awesome. I did some sound design for smaller video games awhile ago. I feel like I could make some mean Protoss sounds. <3

Glad to hear you enjoyed it. And I also appreciate the criticism, if I may, what parts in particular? Some of what may seem to be effects, can actually be the instruments themselves. All of my instruments have many parameters that are controlled to give the sense of motion and momentum. No need to understand theory to appreciate music!

Thanks! Very happy you liked the piece. I LOVE your critique and I am definitely going to experiment with some stuff now, because of your post. That's something I definitely overlooked as I thought the interplay between piano/main melodic instrument would suffice, but you've made me realize that the general AREA both of them take up are the same, so it's like even when the instrument changes you still get the same style of sound. I love the critique, thank you.

I liked it, but am I the only one who came here expecting the zerg's Spire from Star Craft and an article about mutalisks etc.?

Lol, apologies for that. I was actually wondering if that would get mixed up in the sidebar. ;s

Between 3:15 and 3:45 I think is where it seemed like it was a bit hectic. It's probably just my personal taste though (I liked the smoother, calmer parts towards the beginning-middle of the song the best), as I think all of the sounds still fit together pretty nicely in that section.

I enjoyed it a lot! The entire thing!
Very nice style, especially 'cause I'm having a hard time comparing you to any of the other artists I listen to...either way, sick song!
|
Well I think you could teach Blizzard a thing or two, cause the game music for toss and zerg are really bad.

That's very great to hear. I take the challenge of comparison as a compliment!

Haha, SC:BW sounds were sweet, that's all I can think about!
Also thanks for all the feedback so far everyone, this track has gotten about 1600 plays in 12 hours!
