Bahhh!!

I'm not sure where I'm going with this thread but I've never had a problem finding a part-time/summer job until this point in my life and I have no clue why!

Anyone have any tips? I've gone to 4 different malls, checked kijiji, monster, craigslist, literally over 50 business websites and more.

I've even applied to McDonalds where I worked 7 years ago for my first job and they didn't take me because management there remembered me and wouldn't let me take a step back in my life. Those were their words exactly.

Omg lol, I'm just looking to make money this summer. It has nothing to do with my career..

I'm at a lost guys! Anyone have any strategies for summer work that maybe I just don't know? =(

Any help is appreciated fellow TLers!

Make sure everyone you know is aware of your search. You are more likely to get something because someone knew you than because you found their publicized job listing.

I've tried looking for a summer job every year since gr 10 summer and I've never been successful. I've went to summer school every year because of that. Just finishing 1st year uni and can't find summer job so taking courses over the summer!

Definitely this. Often times it's more about who you know, rather than what you know.

Also, how old are you, OP?

23 Sir.
I took micronesias advice and just started asking old friends and former managers of any openings.

I'm still a university student as I was a part-timer my first couple of years and have always been successful in finding summer jobs. Just because Toronto is always open with opportunities especially in the food industry but I've been going at this for 2-3 months now and not even a call back. I followed every resume rule too.. making sure all my former work experience has lasted more than 2 years so it doesn't look like I'm a nomad and stuff. Blah.. I'm getting nervous >,<

I couldn't find a summer job last year. I found one in one attempt this year. The difference was last year I used the internet to attempt to get a job, filling out online applications, etc... But this year I actually walked into the stores and asked for a physical application then turned the physical application in to a manager and instantly got offered an interview on the spot.

Get off the internet when searching for jobs and go into the stores.

What school do you go to? I work at UPS [Jane & Steeles] and they are almost always hiring. The pay isn't that great to start nor are the hours [16 - 20 hours a week], but its a stable job.

This works well. I applied to my job by walking into the store and asking for an application, then turning it in the next day with a copy of my resume. I got called 2 days later for an interview and got a job the day after the interview.

Body language and shit like that is really big for people hiring people. They're in a weird spot too by having to pick someone to work for them, so showing them you're normal and likable really relaxes them and helps them remember who you were when they look at the applications. But this also requires you to dress for the job when you go for the application - if you're applying to be a bank teller, don't show up in a t-shirt and jeans.

Good luck man, the job search is rough everywhere :/ The friend advice is really good too. Like 5 out of the 9 people that work with me were hired because they knew someone who already worked there. They didn't even have to fill out applications lol, just got interviewed after being introduced by their friend and they were hired.

University usually has job postings or just work-study programs. The best places to find work in the summer are tutor places, Chinese schools and the like, I usually get work as manual labor or staff. And I've heard a lot about part time bank-teller positions.

edit: And you're in Toronto so there should be plenty of these schools, perspective from a New Yorker(NYC).

My advice is to apply at all of the area hospitals as a housekeeper/laundry worker/kitchen staff, they get decent money, and it's easy work. The hospital where I work is always hiring new casual employees around this time of the year. They go through training (which is two weeks full time generally) and then pick up roughly 2-4 shifts per week after that.

The good thing about it is, you can opt not to pick up shifts while you're in school, then come back to it when you feel like it.

I dunno. Sorry.

One of my friends after his previous summer job looked at some conventions that were hiring. Theres an air show one and lots of anime ones.
I just got a call today for being rehired at my previous postion and I still have to look for a yearlong coop pey job for next year. Despite the country thing I'm also in Toronto.
I think in our modern age technology has evolved to become more addictive. The things that don't give us pleasure aren't used as much. Work was never meant to be fun, but doing it makes us happier in the long run.
