I've always thought of alcohol as a license for behaviour that you aren't know for. I give people the courage, or a safety net to do shit they be too scared or sober to do. You don't have to drink much, just got to give people you're under the impression that you did. You'll have the chance to say "oh shit sorry I was wasted" so it does act as a social lubricant in that people judge your character less cause what they see isn't your character, they see it's the alcohol.

I consumed quite a lot when I was younger but I very often ended vomiting. I'm definitely not a guy that tolerates alcohol well :p I more a weed guy.

I HATE the taste of alcohol, HATE. In fact Its probably one of my absolute least favorite things, but I still drink quite a bit because I enjoy the effect. I view it like eating broccoli, tastes like shit but its good for you, except you know, its not good for you, but its fun.
In Hungry Hungry Hippos there are no such constraints—one can constantly attempt to collect marbles with one’s hippo, limited only by one’s hippo-levering capabilities.

Do you really need excuses to act like yourself? You could still do those samethings while not intoxicated (nobody is stopping you from making a fool of yourself, except yourself). And, Do the things you do while you are really "intoxicated" really represent you? I think sometimes you could argue yes, but a lot of people I know would argue your a completely different person when you are in that state, when your sober its back to being "afraid" of those things it gave you courage to do (maybe you learned you weren't really afraid of it). Wouldn't it be great if everyone wasn't afraid of being themselves without the use of some chemical? I just feel like thats when you really learn about yourself, what you do and do not like about other people. If someone doesn't like you for who you are its not your problem, its theirs if they want to be around you.

I felt like I have learned from altering my perception (through psychedelics and cannabis, which also happens to be a psychedelic). But at the same time, I failed to make progress with actual life (thats a problem *I* have), and I still never learned that much about myself in the process because my perception wasn't my own perception. It was my perception while using a substance to alter reality. I don't read nearly as much while smoking, even though some people have suggested that helps them, I guess thats just a personal difference.

I have to sit in groups and talk to people reasonably and honestly about how I feel. We aren't allowed to be jerks to each other but that doesn't mean we can't express different opinions and still get along at the end of the day. I just feel like if you really master communication even things that you thought made you more of a social person, like a substance, become obsolete to the tools you yourself have to express yourself honestly, passionately, and with respect to those you are communicating with.

I used to only play starcraft while I was high. I'm sure at some point I probably thought I could only be high and play starcraft well, I don't think thats much different than people using liquid courage in social situations

Edit: Woot post 1,234. Also Thanks Haji, your blogs always inspire me to think about myself more critically.

Well the alcohol itself tastes like shit (stronger stuff like vodka etc when consumed straight up) isnt really pleasent. cocktails, beer, cider, wine etc taste really good because of the low alcohol content you cant really taste the alcohol itself

Thats like saying, "yeah dog shit tastes real bad, but if you mix it with cranberry juice its delicious!" Well sure its not as disgusting as just squeezing the log right into your mouth, but I'd sure as hell rather just have the cranberry juice thanks.

High end stuff can be good. Something like Greygoose or Absolut is not bad at all.

Part of the problem is most college students drink shit or don't know how to make a decent drink. Sorry, no, mixing sprite with vodka does not make it a drink. That's just sprite and vodka.
I like the way the walls go out. Gives you an open feeling. Firefly's a good design. People don't appreciate the substance of things. Objects in space. People miss out on what's solid.

Saying i don't like the tast of Alcohol is like saying... I don't like the taste of Vitamin C, when it actually is in like about everything in some quantity...

It's all about what and how good it is made (the alcohol itself, the other ingredients, the drink...).

Saying i don't like the tast of Alcohol is like saying... I don't like the taste of Wather... When you mean every drink there is with Wather in it.. Which in fact is every drink there is. Alcohol in itself is not defining the taste of a drink.

Say what you want, but anyone with a functional tastebuds can identify the taste of alcohol in even the best quality drinks. I have actually had the opportunity to taste pure reagent grade alcohol, and while it doesnt really have a taste per say, it definitely has a burn and mouthfeel, it is unpleasant.

You make it sound as though you have a hard time trying to get off of the drink whenever you are in your on-cycle. Do what some poets and writers do: they purposely put themselves in these kinds of situations, or cycles, to elevate their personal ''pinnacles of literary expression, so to speak.

I once heard of a writer who wanted to express what the life of a man sentenced to the electric chair is like. To make the experience be as realistic as possible, his friends pretended that he had gone haywire and had killed someone. He was then put in jail and sentenced to death. He went through the entire procedure until they were about to electrocute him, and as soon as the lever was triggered, he was told that it was all a set-up meant to give him the best possible experience.

He then proceeded to write an epic book based on everything that he had undergone. So, whenever you are in your on-cycle, try to make it as memorable as possible so that you can write about the struggles of walking the razor-thin line of keeping drunkenness at bay or something.

I did my time in England and Japan; I think my relative off cycle is a well deserved respite for my liver

its all about the setting man. Doesnt always have to be in the club or big ass party or something. Sometimes its just nice to hang with your friends and talk over some/alot of alcohol. Im sure youve had meaningful or meaningless discussions while intoxicated that you probably wouldnt have got to otherwise. The thing is though, if everyone else is drunk and youre not, its boring as shit.

Being drunk or high for that mather is just a social lubricant. The thing is... you wont be on the same page if you sober and everyone else is not.

You been on both sides so im sure you know how it is. Of course not everyone is like this, but believe me... most dude's idea of hanging out is kicking back some beers in whatever setting.

I've actually come to dislike drinking profusely in a social setting, because it removes certain restrictions that I usually place on my words.

I'm interested to hear your view on caffeine, given that you consider the mental effects of alcohol to be detrimental to your thinking/writing. I was under the impression that the two have somewhat antagonistic effects, with caffeine improving single-minded focus at the expense of abstract connections, and vice versa for alcohol (in moderation, of course). And of course there are the (admittedly somewhat inconclusive) studies showing health benefits related to moderate drinking.

Regardless, it's up to you what you want to do with alcohol in your life. I find quiet cocktail/wine nights with friends extremely satisfying and a great way to connect with people, so it's definitely staying in mine.

I actually try my best to avoid unnecessary caffeine as well.
I do get a cup from time to time with friends though.

Anything you do intoxicated will not be of the same quality as when your mind is fresh. Even as a social "lubricant" as someone put it. Its deceiving, it makes you feel good, you may be able to take your mind of things that were bugging you and enjoy the moment. But it will never make you better or more social than you are capable of already. Life is not easy but its sure nice having a chemical that makes you feel good. Thats all it is really, some chemicals that trick your brain into feeling content or happy, but its possible to have those things while sober, even if its difficult and takes time to learn about yourself.

I'm actually in addiction counseling and I go to 12 step groups. I've spent a lot of time hiding myself in intoxication, now I have to find out who I really am, even if it is uncomfortable. It doesn't matter what it is either, being sober and having awareness of your surrondings and of your own thoughts is the only way to make progress. I feel like "using" is just someone spinning their wheels, regardless of how much fun it is, you will come back to the same place you were before you started.

You can liberate your mind without substances, even though it may be more difficult. Though there is nothing wrong with enjoying something you like (gogo moderation), as long as you don't enjoy it so much that it affects your life in a negative way, or kills your liver.
