Bowties n Bad Ideas (a musicians life)

ella_guru Canada1741 Posts April 05 2012 15:44 GMT #1 ive been a musician for about 5 years, as in , have been supporting myself through that pursuit. thetruth of that matter is i was probably doomed/destined to be one when i was no more than a glint in my pop's eye when he was tryin to get a nut with my mum. choices be damned, here i am, one of those few and lucky people that can say im living the dream ( i guess that's why i dont sleep much). but it wasnt always like this, dear readers. in my younger years i was a retail warrior mostly by trade. famous players, blockbuster (RIP) , pita pit, subway, a call center, construction, door to door salesman, and even yes.... + Show Spoiler + starbucks one of the worst experiences of my life, but one of the most important, perhaps. i dont think im sadomasochistic, but yes, the torture, shaped me. i know what you're thinking "that hot frothy load dripping down my throat in the morning is the big healthy dose of caffinated fair trade rocket propellant i need to get me through the day!" and i dont entirely disagree, sure. people need vices. but the other side of the counter is entirely different. upselling of scones, awkward smiles + Show Spoiler + and weird pressure to make starbucks "the third place" for customers. to cut that short, i called in sick with "problems in the bathroom" too many times and they fired me, no turnin back now, said my 18 year old self. no money, no job, and rent to pay. so i took my only skill and basically prostituted myself aurally in the streets, and got so good with my hands i even did this on a daily basis: + Show Spoiler + when i figured that out, the twinkling of my guitar made the twinkling of loose change fill up the once empty space of my guitar case, like too many sweets in the greedy gut of agustus gloop let free in the chocolate factory. as time passed, i got tired of the hot sun and hauling gear around, started teaching more , and focused on my degree in classical guitar. everything sort of glazed over in my head at this point, and while i was stable, i wasnt very creative or getting too much done. .........*shot of sun and moon going up and down in time lapse fashion*........ here i am , in a new city, having dropped out of university after 3.5 years of study (yes, my last semester) with no students and no job and no future security. i am happy. im livin the dream so i dont need sleep much. years have passed since i put on any of my numerous bowties on, as i havent been much of a performer , but im gigging again here, and with performance comes entertainment, and i look back to all the great men in bowties , n i know that i cant run from who i am. why dear reader, have i gone to all this trouble to share the relative mutters of a life lived to young adulthood? context. because recently, we finished that cover album you have probably seen me putting up videos of lately. i think its important you know where im coming from. i dont know why, im just like that. so the next step in my journey is where it meets the next step in yours : ** http://valuedcustomer.bandcamp.com/album/fun-covers ** that's the album we just complete over the last 10 days or so since ive been here. pretty cool on YT we got over 4000 views in the past 8 days. i hope more than anything you can have some fun with it, music for me has always been a communal thing, bringin people together, thats whats so fun about messin about with covers. of course, being the ditz that i am, i played a rock band guitar for this album (yes it works, the new ones with all them buttons). ive never actually played rock band, but my friend had one and it ended up being fun to noodle on. so pay what you want for it, anything helps, i find it really generous and a good way to show appreciation. if you cant do that or dont feel like it , an even better way to be a part of it is to just like our FB page , sub to our YT page, or even better yet just post it around for your friends to see, share the fun and the luv, you know? thatd be really rad. MisterD Germany1338 Posts April 05 2012 16:25 GMT #2 you're pulling quite the start here Oo i've seen your latest blogs and you two guys are really fun to watch and your output quality (sound wise) is really good imo. Your bow ties are super funny, you should consider making this your all-round style thing, like your album arts just a monotonous or maybe graded color background with a single diagonal bow tie and just mix up the pattern and colors for every album. A few hints on the videos though: cut back on the fancy camera effects in your videos, reminds me slightly of "OH LOOK I CAN MAKE POWERPOINT WITH LASER TEXT! EVEN HAS SOUND FOR EVERY CHARACTER FLYING INTO THE SCREEN YEAH!". It's fine to fade around, but do defined fades. don't go to like 50/50 transparency with funny grey tone filtering and stay there for 10 seconds, that's bad. and because i like funny lights: buy like four or so colored light bulbs instead to get some colorful atmosphere in the background :D oh and also, maybe try to avoid to sing along or talk to each other while filming. It feels really weird to see you talk but not hear anything of it. why are both your albums "released 01 january 1999"? Oo /edit and btw, do you know that you can actually link to your twitter directly instead of just posting your account names? saves typing effort for interested readers although i recommend improving your profile over there so it doesn't look like it's completely not related to any of the people you see in the video.
