After months of planning, payments, and general crazy and confusion, I've finally been accepted to go to Seoul in the fall to study at Korea University! It feels great, and although I'll miss the great city of Chicago, and my second city of Minneapolis, I'm really excited to go somewhere new!
This is my one chance in life to go visit another culture on the opposite side of the world. I'll have my challenges, and I'll have my problems when I get there, but I hope to find out enough about myself and Korea to make it a worthwhile experience.
Considering everything I hope to do, I'll be very busy. Math will still be my primary focus, but I aim to get very involved in the program's a-la-carte excursions to other parts of the country. Don't worry everyone, pictures will be taken. I'm definitely investing in a DSLR camera for the semester..I don't think I can afford not to!
Seoul is almost 100% WiFi enabled, so I'll still be as connected as I am now, as Internet is dirt cheap there. I'm so excited to be in the most technologically advanced city in the world! I hope other people feel the same way I do, and people in my program are nerdy like me and hopefully they'll want to visit Mok-Dong Studios to visit the GSL with Tastosis <33!! Yes, I'll be attending StarCraft events while I'm there, hopefully a Brood War Proleague match or OSL Finals so I can see the true passion of the fans in Seoul for Brood War. It'll be awesome!!!
Since my primary source of income is up in the air for the summer, I'll be scrambling to figure all of that out, but as of right now, it's all looking good!
Well...the Bulls are on, and for the record, I'll still be watching every Bulls, Blackhawks, Bears, and Sox game I can while I'm abroad. I have so many methods...not even thousands of miles can stop me from getting my Chicago sports fix. I shall post again later!
Until then, annyeong!

Why didn't you? We could've gone to GSL!

You're gonna enjoy yourself for sure. I'm assuming you're 20+?
Go to GSL by yourself if no one else wants to go, it's still HELLA fun.
Also, eat EVERYTHING.

Oh you know it. I decided to do this because I know I have to come back for a fifth year, so I might as well spend some time abroad! So excited for it!
I don't plan on taking too many rigorous courses. One numerical methods class and then the rest will be language and culture and such.

I'll probably play baseball and a bit of soccer even though i'm not really a fan of soccer, but I hear it is sort of big there. I'm pretty active so I'll play whatever and be decent at it. If archery is big...I'd love to get better. I never really learned well.

Congratz! Use it wisely man. And keep us updated!

You bet! I've made another blog for the public. This will basically be a mirror plus the StarCraft stuff, since I don't think my friends want to read about Alive vs Curious =]

congrats man

I envy you, living in Seoul would be amazing. Do you speak Korean though? I'd figure if you're going to school there then you'd most likely be required to but heh, you never know. The Korean food is AMAZING and the people are so nice ^^ As long as you're respectful and not a complete douche. I didn't get to go to GOM studios when I went T-T

Congrats, I'm at Yonsei right now in a Public Health / Med program. It's fun.

Congratulations, you're gonna have an awesome time in Korea I reckon I've spent my semester abroad in Korea as well (at Inha University in Incheon, directly next to Seoul), I can recommend going to Korea ^^ Hope you're not taking the 'easy' road and pick the courses that are made only for Exchange students where you get 99% A-grades, there you won't meet any Koreans. I lived in the dorms with 3 Koreans and played lots of games with them, lots of fun ^^ As long as you're not one of the typical 'party semester' Exchange students I guess you will meet some "real" Koreans instead of the ones that only hang around the Exchange students..
I can recommend to go to Carribean Bay (biggest swimming pool in the world?, with lots of slides and stuff), Everland and Lotte World (both amusement/theme parks)...also go to Yeoui-Do and Time Square.. Enjoy your time in Korea!

Still taking high level math courses with computer components but will also be taking Korean courses. Not a typical party student but I will be visiting noraebang! Yeah I'll be around everyone, might as well get my money's worth.

OP: technically isn't your post a day early?

Congrats, hope you have an absolute fuckin blast

May I ask why you chose South Korea exactly?

Well I didn't want to visit a traditional "study-abroad" country like the UK or France or New Zealand or Australia. I've always been fascinated with very old and traditional cultures and learning about Korean culture while taking taekwondo as a kid has made me very interested in Korea.
As a technology nerd, Seoul seems to be the perfect place for me to visit. They're so far ahead of us in technological infrastructure, and I'm so excited to be a part of it.
And...obviously...StarCraft <3

^_^ Congrats man! Hit up the karaoke bars, pc bangs, and the mall!
I'm thinking about doing the program where college students go to Korea to teach English for like 6 months. Maybe I'll see you at GSL if I ever happen to do it!

I thought about doing that too! If I really like it there, I may consider that at some point! Yeah for sure about GSL!! Would be great to find someone to go with.
