The Game
Tonight I decided to play a MOBA game with my friends. Game format is typical DotA style, and is free to play here I got 5 games in, 4 MMR on the US-West servers, 1 Midwars on an Australian server

Game 1 - Replay - Game ID 83435621
I perform my standard Random in the picking phase, comes up Revenant, depending on the rest of the team will decide my role, ganker/support/semi carry, Caige and Commandozed right click Lego and Dev respectively. Last second our 2 Pubbers snap pick Soulstealer and Scout. This immediately makes it more difficult for our team to lane due to having a potential jungler, and dev. I head to the Top lane legion side, waiting for game start. Top - Devourer + Revenant vs Nymphora + Voodoo Jester, Mid - Soulstealer vs Maliken, Bot - Scout vs Moon Queen + Rampage, Legion Jungler - Legionnaire

I invis Devourer just after hitting 3, we snag bloodlust and the bonus gold on Nymphora, i unfortunately over extend and go down to Voodoo Jester Shortly after Soulstealer takes down Maliken in mid. The 4 minute rune is DD, Caige spots this for SS and is met with

"me 1td" Me Won Tower Defense??

Laning continues, We trade a few blows and snag a few kills. They start roaming ganking, I invis Dev again and he gets an ult off on their MQ, they have 4 players at top, I mis-interpret Revenants L1 ult and cast defile on devourer. This doesn't apply charges to me, which ult level 2 would have done. Moonqueen gets away and we go down 2v4 in a 2-0 exchange. Soulstealer rolls in to the 4 at top several years late and goes down. Exclaiming "Tele" as he goes down. This turns it into a 3- 0 exchange.

If it's the thought that counts...WHAT THE HELL WERE YOU THINKING!

We team fight 4v5 mid at ~15 mins. Predictably we lose this encounter as well 2-0 exchange.

A trend starts to emerge. Scout players gonna Scout

Another 2-1 exchange at the 18 minute mark. From this point it predictably ends poorly, final score is

Game 2 - Replay - Game ID 83437559
Commandozed and I both random, I get Master of Arms, he gets Monkey King, we promptly swap. They get Bloodhunter so i call mid. Lanes unfold as follows - Top - Voodoo Jester vs MoA + Jeraziah, Mid - BH vs MK, Bot - Gunblade + Thunderbringer vs Pandamonium + Empath. Legion Jungler - Legionnaire

I move bot to set up a gank, unfortunately GS gets away

BH and i trade blows, as i try and figure out how to combo MK effectively. Bloodlust goes down with a group gank on BH Mid, Jera and MoA come down for the gank, then push top towrer.

13mins rolls around and we engage in a terrible battle, going 1-4. A minute later we have a long pause while Commandozed disconnects. The Legion team unpause and successfully gank me mid.

We participate in several more losing battles, the legion advantage already to much for us to take, we concede just after 30 mins. So far not having fantastic games.

Game 3 - Replay - Game ID 83439897
My beautiful fiancee randoms for me this time, lucky fingers was the theory, she net's me a predator whom I swiftly change to bunny mode. Commandozed gets his Devourer mid this time and Caige picks up empath. Top - VJ + Vindicator vs Hellbringer + GB, Mid - Dev vs Nomad, Bot, Pred + Emp vs Draconis + Armadon

Emp harasses Drac heavily giving my predator free farm, I indicate we'll go for a kill at Lvl 3, Drac meets the Hellbourne courier for a health pot which is promptly cancelled for the bloodlust.

Nomad comes down with invis and scores himself a double tap at 5 mins, Vindi pushes up to hard and is meat with the hot lead of Gunblade, S2's brand new hero.

Devourer comes down to bottom at about 9 mins and we take an easy kill on Armadon, our top lane pubbers trade blows, Vindi goes down. The bottom lane is now abandoned by the Hellbourne leaving me to free farm on predator. at 11 minutes i'm farming at 270 gpm. 12 minutes comes around Dev gets a big hook on Draconis, making short work of him.

YOUR MINE....

A team fight erupts at top 4v4 working out in favour of the Hellbroune team in a 2-3 exchange, however I roll predator out of the jungle onto Draconis to make it an even 3-3 exchange. This boosts my gold farm to 325 by 20 mins, Shieldbreaker 3 completed with steam boots.

A team fight mid puts me up to 5/1/4, 7/1/4 shortly there after at 25mins, I've now finished my Insanitarius, which with Empath's Ultimate, As one on me boosts my damage to 310 with at an attack speed of 1.5 hits per second. We push the second tier tower and the Hellbourne concedes, I finish at 438GPM for the game. Goin large!

Game 4 - Replay - Game ID 83442140
I random again, Swiftly picking my Winston Charmadon skin i'm ready to play. With how our team has ended up, I take mid on Armadon. Lanes - Top - Dev + MQ vs Berserker + Puppet Master, Mid - Amun Ra vs Winston Charmadon, Bot - GB vs Polywog Priest + Sand Wraith, Legion Jungle - Predator.

I trade blows with Ra early, both showing off our tanky ability's, We race for regen which i manage to get, then juke his stun, we both return to middle lane, where I bait him under our tower for bloodlust. He wasn't very pleased with it.

I shortly head bottom with invis and help gank GB, our SW gets the kill but unfortunately goes down to the tower. I head back to base and port mid, PP come and assist a gank on Ra, So far so good! The legion move into a heavy ganking mode to try and get themselves back into the game, Ra redeems his early deaths with a double tap, press the advantage to take the top tower, and force a team fight mid that goes horribly for us, 14 mins into the game and we're at 12-8 in the legions favour. 15 mins in we get another gank and trade Mid tower for bottom tower. At this point not only are they up on Towers, They're up on kills. We team fight at bottom at 16mins and go 3-3, unfortunately their MQ and GB lived, however our SW dived into 3 of them making it 4-3 in their favour. Score is 17-12 in legion's favour.

A few more team fights erupt. The really odd thing at this point was that 1 team fight we'd absolutely crush them, the next, we'd be absolutely crushed, however the scoreboard was telling the real story here. 26-16 with the tower advantage in the legion's favour 23 mins in. 27mins our berserker is sitting in the well AFK. We remove him but find he has no useful items, and minimal gold to split up. While they were perhaps in front, we had a chance with 5, with 4 our hopes were dashed.

Moment of the match happens shortly before our concede. We team fight in the tree's just outside the base. Caige drops his PP ult... ON TOP OF ME.

Pro Ward Trap

Immobilising me for the duration of the fight and possibly changing the outcome! All good Caige!! Game was lost before that anyway!

Final game, All mid, Duplicate Hero's, No powerups, Casual Mode. No Respawn Timer
I picked Bombardier, Commandozed picked Flint Beastwood
Teams - Glacius, Dev, GB, Bomb, MoA vs Bomb, FB, Vindi, GB, Dev

Our Dev lands a big hook at 30 seconds in for the bloodlust, as is the case with most of these games, the team who gets bloodlust gets on a roll and usually wins the game. FB gets on a massive roll and ends with a big immortal.

These games are a lot of fun and usually have quite a few close calls in them, I escaped this one with just 4 HP!

is 1500 a high rating?

Not in particular no. the friends i'm playing with have Low 1400 scores, so you get a wide spread of players. 1850+ is considered high level/pro play. 1500 is about standard. Anything below that becomes not so good.

The first time I ever played HoN I played as a character named "rampage"; my experience with MOBA type games was limited (I played some league between the SC2 beta phase 2 end and Release)--so obviously I was terrible--though apparently I was so terrible that some guy on my team took his time to get on a mic, and ask me: "Rampage, do you have down syndrome or something?". He then gets off the mic and says nothing for the rest of the game.

Unfortunately the community is a little volatile. A lot of players flay simply to troll and get people mad. Usually you can ignore it, and for the most part have a pretty entertaining games. It's the players that take it upon themselves to ruin the experience for others that ruin the game for new players. It's a really steep learning curve game as well, the tutorial teaches next to nothing!

This is pretty standard =). The thing with HoN's rating system is new players start out at 1500 which like the OP said is a pretty average or just below average rating, but someone coming to the game with no experience in Dota/LoL is more likely 1300 rating so they will get fairly thrashed. This is balanced out by the large amount of people that come to the game on the back of thousands of dota matches and possible semi competitively play like regular scrims. These players with no prior experience would probably be rated 1600-1700. Then on top of that you have a team based match making system that takes much longer to work out your skill compared to a 1v1 game because your influence on the games out come is only 1/5.

HoN is a lot of fun if you play it with friends, but the learning curve is pretty tough if you have never played DotA. I think i would rather chop off my balls then play solo MM.

Hey this is Grouty on HoN I'm the leader of the TL Clan. You should check out the clan channel and hang there. /join clan teamliquid. I really like all the angles and such you've made in these pictures they look great. Anyways if I could make 1 request of you it would be that you stop using the Term MOBA. It was coined by someone that is very poisonous to the community and esports at large and how it caught on I'll never know but I try my best to kill that word, Instead I use "DotA games" or "Action RTS" while neither are particularly great it's better than bringing any attention to someone who doesn't deserve it.
