So I have a summer internship interview tomorrow at a startup in Boston and I just came to the realization that I have absolutely no idea how to dress for these. I'm afraid that if I overdress I'll look out of place and worse, I feel really uncomfortable wearing a suit. I know startup guys are known for being casual dressers, but I still feel like I need to be wearing more than my typical jeans and a tee-shirt. Advice?

What kind of startup is it? I feel like it kinda matters for what to wear.

Wear a suit. I don't care if they are a casual dress workplace, if they don't tell you otherwise wear a suit. With a tie and polished shoes.

This isn't always true.

I'd say dress slightly more formal than how they dress for work.

Always err on the side of formality, yes. But do not overdo it. For example you wouldn't show up to a roofing interview in a suit. But you may show up in a polo and jeans or khakis when the common work attire is jeans and an old t shirt.

I agree with unsmart. Suit is always a good choice. A lot depends on the start up though. At minimum I would say slacks, dress shirt and tie though. No way should you ever wear jeans and a t-shirt to an interview.

So I've never actually visited this company before but based on their webpage http://www.skycore.com/how-we-work.php they seem to dress semi-formally. I don't actually have any pants on me at college that aren't suit pants or jeans right now, so I think I might overdress and wear the suit.

Yeah, that's the right choice.

Put it this way. The penalty for overdressing is very small. The penalty for underdressing is huge. Be safe, wear the suit.

My background is accounting so I may be influenced by that.

I say wear a crab suit.

Nice clean semi-formal top and pants tucked with leather shoes are always nice

I'd wear a shirt, dress pants and some nice shoes. The blazer is overkill, imo. Tie optional.

Dress shirt (long sleeve), dress pants and good shoes. Tie is ok depending on the company you are going to. If you're unsure, wear it. Suit jacket is ok as well but optional.

Err on the side of overdressing.

Ask. Sometimes the receptionist might even be able to tell you since they will have seen other candidates walk through the door before and have a sense of how the place works.

If for some reason asking is not an option, dress in a suit/tie. It's always safer to be overdressed. You can have a bit of fun with it at the interview at your expense if you find you've dressed too formally.

No one will be having any fun if you've dressed too casually.

Good luck with the interview.

White dress shirt, black tie, slacks, belt, something slightly more formal than sneakers.
You can't go wrong with that. It's business, it's not trying to hard. it's solid interview attire.
I get it.

Ask Dimaga/Carmack (which is which) if you can have his "Suits suck" t-shirt. Which he, mysteriously didn't wear at the I.E.M. price ceremony.

General rule of thumb is you dress how the employees dress. But if your still unsure just ring up reception and ask whoevers at the desk. They should definatly know.

@Lungic that "suits suck" t shirt was absolutly aweful!

This seems to be what I would do. I know at my current job I wear a teeshirt and hoodie with jeans. Very casual but on first day I wore dress shirt and jeans, this is because in the interview I asked how they dress and then dressed a bit above that.

Dress shirt and dress pants is pretty good. But i agree suit may be over kill.

dress one level above what people would generally wear - if they dress business casual, you dress business professional

if they wear khakis and a button up, you wear a suit
if they wear bluejeans, you wear khakis and a polo/button up

I have a question concerning that.

Nobody has suggested wearing a monocoloured t-shirt, blazer, jeans, nice shoes. That is a quite common "legere-semi-formal" dress in Germany.

Is that uncommon in the US?

Suit. Tie or bow-tie.
Jacket unbuttoned.

wear a suit to be safe but just dress pants, dress shirt and a tie are almost always ok for a software/it company interview, almost all of them are business casual. Don't wear a tie with a suit it's too formal.

After looking at your link you should definitely wear a suit. We dress the same at my current job and I wore a suit and so did all the other applicants. Do not wear a black suit, but instead go with a blue or charcoal one. Dress shirt, tie and dress shoes as well. Button the jacket and do not wear a bow tie.

kind of curious to me as i have never wore a full suit to an interview. only ever wore the the blazer with cold weather, and it always comes off after i hit reception. the last thing i want to do is start sweating balls during an interview, esp with wearing a tie.

Basically, like LaSt)ChAnCe stated, you always want to dress up from how they usually dress at the job. The OP posted a link that shows the employees wearing business casual so he should wear business professional. It is very common in the professional world that you would wear a suit and tie to an interview, at least in the States. In fact, 100% of the applicants coming into my office wear a suit and tie and we wear business casual.
