I just finished reading ”Unstoppable: 45 powerful stories of perseverance and triumph” and I hunger for more books like that.

I saw the other blog where another person was asking to recommend him a book, but I don't want any fiction, I want real life advice.

I know tl is not google, but what are your recommendations?

It's mostly extremely hokey, but there's a couple inspirational chapters in "The Art of Manliness". Most of the time I'm embarrassed to own that thing, but the chapters on fatherhood, male friendship and Ben Franklin's life of virtue are really good.

Here is a link to the life of virtue stuff. Ben Frank would make a grid for the week that had every day/virtue combination (you can get a pdf on the site). At the end of the day he would put a mark in the virtues he messed up on. Although its well documented he didn't live up to a lot of these virtues, the pursuit of a virtuous life is its own reward.

http://artofmanliness.com/2008/06/01/the-virtuous-life-wrap-up/

Maybe not exactly "inspiring", but "How to Win Friends and Influence People" really got me excited about the art of socialization and negotiation. It's not just for the socially maladjusted- everyone will find that they break at least one of the simple rules that are laid out on how to be a socially wholesome and likable person. I guess it is inspiring, or at least it inspired me to try to and make myself more approachable and friendly.

Neither of those two are stories of conquering life-long goals or climbing Everest- they aren't even stories- but they might help you set some lifelong goals that are really worth achieving.

Not sure this falls under the exact category in question but I found outliers to be very motivational and also very interesting (at a glance the reader might mistake the message but it it touts hard work and helped me dispel the common notion of thinking "oh they're just more talented than I am at that")

people who recommend 'art of learning' obviously don't play chess. everyone in that community knows that waitzkin is nothing more than a case of wasted talent and maybe half a con-artist. his whole theory about how chess and tai-chi synergize is such a load of crap... he never managed to do anything noteworthy in chess after learning tai-chi. people just don't want to admit simple truths like the more you practice the better you get, end of story.

Why not check out the speech given by Steve Jobs in Stanford?

"Life is short, knowing that I gonna die make me try to achieve as many thing as posible"

Very good speech.

Seconded. Even if you don't like the guy or the sport of cycling, this is very motivational and well written.

I don't know what Waitzkin advocates, but quality of practice is very important.
