Sadly it's true that the general public does not speak english here in Germany. Even though it's the foreign language almost everyone gets taught at school, only a few actually speak and understand english well enough to be able to communicate in english. Our school system is terrible, many students are "left behind" and politicians don't care, and then we get to hear stories like this. Nevertheless Germany is a great county, and the people are nice and willing to help, just be well prepared before you travel here. And Hannover during CeBIT is not representative of Germany in any way, just imagine a city like Atlanta hosting a convention several times as large as CES; of course all the hotels nearby will be fully booked months in advance, and everyone will be busy, while the city is flooded with tourists.

Overall it was a fun read. There's humor in the text while explicitly showing how bad his day was. I'm also surprised that he paid for 1liter of gas. lul. that's cheap...that german. ![]()

Also when visiting a foreign country where you don't speak the language, it's not enough to have your managers phone number. Shit can go wrong. ![]() I just can't believe the receptionist in that hostel didn't speak any english at all. It was the hostel for all the IEM players right? So they knew it would be mostly/only foreign guests... I think a hostel is totally fine for the players (thinking of the whine by some pro's), but there always should be someone to communicate at least in english. If the hostel cannot provide that, IEM should have.
