Where does the SC2's community problem lie?

I'll attempt to word this as best as possible with the lack of time I have, and come back to it later.
Please don't turn this into a troll post from reddit or 4chan either. I would appreciate some feedback or an opinion if you agree or if you disagree, and why if you so feel.

As we all have seen over the past couple weeks there has been a slight spike of drama in the SC2 community in regards to a couple casters, from comments they have made. For those that are unaware of some of these headlines, I envy you whole heartily.

Since "joining" the community back in July of 2010 I have seen the SC2 scene grow into prominence of Esports and Video Games in general. It is heralded as the most complicated game(which I agree) there has ever been. We've raved about how we hold the most mature community, which is very possible. I know when I say this, I will most likely get a negative or typical we never asked for anything response, but the SC2 community seeks the best of content out there. With traits and aspects such as this a majority of gamers that revolve around SC2 has put the game and the community on a pedestal that is very high. When that type of image is stamped on you, of course you're going to be held by higher standards. Though because of that, is the community turning into a bunch of elitists in regards to any other game or to each other for that matter.

A constant complaint I see is:
If I win, I get bm'd. If I lose I get called bad.

Another one that I see is:
As soon as someone makes a slip up such as ORB or KATU, the community goes on a which hunt to crucify. But then we look to see people like Idra or Naniwa to slip up for entertainment.

***Some of this stuff I'm guilty as well.

********I have to run, but will back on soon.

I'm just wondering where does the problem lie? I'm worried that the community is going to turn so unfriendly and has and opportunity to get rap as other gaming communities have.

I also never played broodwar, so did these type of things happen in that community as well?

The problem is when something tries to go mainstream you attract all the casual gamers that hate losing. You know those kids on cod that scream at you if you so much as aim near them? Yeah them.

Thankfully we still retain some sort of common sense right? The Starcraft community isn't the greatest but it is my current home and I'm sure we can agree it's a better community than most others?

As for the most challenging game in the world that title will always go to Broodwar.

Imagine you have to control your broodlords so that half the broodlings don't turn out to be duds. compared to reaver. As for more mature community i think BroodWar also holds that title.

Also Orb and Katu slipping up is different than Idra or Naniwa simply because of racial slurs that are not except able is different than not saying GG after a game. or IMBA TOSS

I think most can say that we don't enjoy losing, and definitely know the kids you're talking about. Though toss aside the casual gamer aspect, do you think it has anything to do with the image you create for yourself playing the game and the stress that comes with it. If you're in a lower league, and you lose. You will be frowned upon most likely as a player, and not taken serious. I do agree with you also that I think regardless of this drama we still are the best community, but I just wouldn't ever think we would draw so much attention to such things that aren't actually related to game play.

Not sure how these examples will work to effectiveness, but take WoW I guees. If someone shit talks in that community nothing was really brought up off. Most of the time people would be focused on bad gameplay because say a failed raid would be a total time waste.
Back in the day of Dota. I wouldn't see anyone really freaking out over comments that much, you would just get pissed if someone wasn't doing there part holding their lane, ganking, or correct items bought.
CS 1.6. one of the best games ever I was able to play. That was nearly a anything goes environment from what I can recall.

It's just weird to think a community of better standards and more mature composition, would feed into this paparazzi TMZ atmosphere rather than worry about themselves or just game play in general.

@Mysterymeat1 I never played broodwar so that's why I asked thanks for the feedback.

the problem is a lot of people don't really like Star2, they like esports, so they follow the most prominent game, star2, so they follow what they understand; drama.

I agree with you that it is a better community

however when did sc2 try to go mainstream 0-o. From what ive read 99% of the moderators just make this their hobby and realize sc2 isn't going mainstream anytime soon. Just 10 yo kids who want to believe that by going pro they will become somebody famous in the real world.

The sc2 community is soft and nosey. They're beginning to be like that old lady that lives next door with her cats. Always in your business trying to see what she can tell the neighborhood. Its quite frustrating. Then you have the grammar nazis and truth police that roam the forums looking for trouble. When I first joined teamliquid, I took it pretty seriously. Not seriously as in what I described above, but I began to take interest in e-sports through tl and thought it would be big like "real" sports.

never in a million years would I expect what has happened in the past 2 weeks to become such an issue. this is why:

1. Its the internet, if your sad about something someone said... oh well.
2. If you look to start trouble and/or bait anger out of somebody, dont expect to NOT get a reaction.
3. Get over the "we're all adults so we have to be Good Mannered" shit, like I said in #1, its the internet.
4. People are entitled to say whatever the fuck they want to say because again, its the internet.

and the more and more the above goes on, the deeper the hole we are digging are selves is getting. Sure, you can whine about someone saying "Nigger", but im black and I can say that it doesnt bother me and Im sure that it really doesnt bother any other black person on this site. I find it funny because people usually only say it when they are referring to stupid shit, not to be racist.

So my message to the community is:

Grow some nuts. Let that testosterone flow, drink a beer, and enjoy watching a stream just like you would a basketball or football game and stop whining because thats a bitch trait

People are just assholes. Maybe it has to do with the fact that everything is on the internet, so no one feels like they have to respect anyone else. There's no chance that someone is going to kick your ass, you don't even have to interact with anyone if you don't want to; it's not like you'll run into that guy you called a name at the store. That's probably problem number 1.

Problem 2 probably has to do with the fact that I think most of the people who play sc2 specifically tend to be more.. cynical and upfront about everything. It doesn't take much brain power to play an fps, at the core it's just coordination and reaction. I'd like to think that most people who play sc2, or at least who are involved with TL (I know I've learned a good bit here) have very set opinion on things. As a result, and from the way that the forum community works, people just post what they feel. Again, in part because of the whole anonymity of it all. There isn't much gray area for posters. Those people in fact tend to not post. It's either black or white.

But still my take on it all; People do evil things when they can't get caught. Perhaps not evil, but certainly highly critical with no regard for others. Human nature? Psychology? idk
