Hey all! Just felt like writing a quick blog to explain my annoying housing situation. Some people might be aware, but this week I'm moving back to LA to basically go full time into SC2. I've found it admittedly really difficult to manage NASL while being a full time grad student as well, and with all the new changes and big things happening behind the scenes... well, I absolutely need to go back.
I'm sad to be leaving school and my scholarship, but it'll most likely always be there for me. SC2 may or may not, so it's time to seize the day and go for it!
That brings me to... my apartment! I've got a lease until September, and I have a bunch of furniture (when I moved here I thought I'd live here for 1-2 years, so I furnished my apartment with that in mind). The problem is my apartment complex has an annoying move-in/out policy so I can't just sell stuff on craigslist and have people pick it up at will. I need to book a move-out in advance, and it makes things complicated. I also am not sure what to do with my lease. Subletting will take time, and I don't have time.
Has anyone here ever been in this situation / what did you do? I think I can get most of my furniture out of the place (except the big 3... bed/sofa/bookcase), and just leave them in the alley for someone to take (everything except those 3 things aren't very expensive anyway.. the other 3 things are like $1k combined tho, and really big so I doubt I can just take them out and leave them on the curbside).
If anyone is wondering where I live; I live in a studio in Dupont circle, pretty much the coolest neighbordhood in DC!
Any advice / thoughts would be awesome. Thanks guys~

You may want to invest in a storage locker to put your furniture in, and then sell it through craigslist as time permits. The initial investment of the locker may seem hefty, but you can pay it off (and hopefully earn some cash) by selling the furniture. If there's money to be made there, try to exhaust all possibilities to make it? 
edit; this would allow you to set up a move-out date to get everything out at once.

If you have some close friends still in the area where your apartment is, give them a key and get them to show it and you can still try to get it subletted from LA just through emails and such. Feb -> Sept is a lot of time left on a lease to eat T.T

I'd totally sublet it to eSports people if they were interested (it's not cheap though, and I don't own the building and can't control the rent). I would sublet it to esports people for a bit cheaper and just pay the extra myself if it'd make someone happy tho @_@~!
Although more than 2 people living here might be tough (500 sq foot studio) O_O!~

Well, there goes the first idea that popped into my head. That's what my gf and I did with stuff we didn't want to drag across the country.
Will they let you use the door to door services that drop off a storage unit? You could get one container, throw stuff in there, move it to LA and craigslist-sell it when you get a place, or just keep it. We split the cost of one container with a friend who was doing basically the same move: DC to SF, and ended up with enough space for both of our beds, bookcases and the rest of our big stuff.
What are vacancy rates like on apartments in your area? Not a lawyer or anything, but I think you're no longer responsible for the rest of the lease if your landlord can find a replacement tenant. You may pay an early cancellation fee, and rent for the duration of the search but by April I think you'd be clear. If you have a decent relationship with your landlord or management agency, talk to them and see how long they think it'd take to get someone else in there.

Apartments sell out INSANELY fast here... basically like 1-2 days after a listing goes up, it's gone. At least during the summer months, not sure about right now. Dupont is probably one of the most desirable locations in DC

I can tell you here
1) you shouldn't have to sublet it yourself. You should work out a deal with your landlord that you will rent out the place and have the new tenets sign a lease. Generally that's more than enough for them.
2) it's crazy hard for landlords to take cases of dropped leases to court and make any money. It's generally to time consuming and costly to bother and despite threats all landlords usually just don't bother.

Doesn't really matter the time of year stuff from what I've seen stuff goes insanely fast 365 days a year yo. especially places in Dupont.

Well if you end up not being able to sell it or some other favorable outcome, I would at least donate it either to some charity or to a school/student (probably college). That way at least its not leaving it randomly on the street and you can help someone else out.
That is what I would do if I couldn't get it sold in time at least.

Yo how much would you sublet it for o_o realtalk lol, and when does your lease extend to? I applied for an internship a few blocks away from our campus over summer and you know, if I were to have gotten it I would look into housing and surely your sublet would be cheaper than living in Ivory Tower, and if it extends in to the next schoolyear then I would have that option as well

2nd Edit: jesus 500 sq feet...I live in like...maybe 150 square feet for my personal space in my dorm ;o hahaha. PM me or skype me the price you'd be willing to sublet it for and if I had any takers to possibly room with over summer, or if its still cheaper than Ivory Tower is for summertime I'd def. want to talk to you about it, unfortunately there is no way I'd move in until May or something so you'd still have your place empty between now and summer :x Also, if you were able to sublet it would I be able to get an extension on the lease IF I were to live off campus next year or something? Just a thought I guess, I mean this is obviously looking quite far ahead for me given my school and academic situation so I just want to ask any questions if you know them, if you don't then it probably isn't a problem since I wouldn't have any availability to move in until May at the earliest, if not at all.
As for the furniture, you're really willing to just thro wsome of it out? What do you have I mean...if I could use it, I do have a lot of empty space in my tiny room so....maybe? :o
