Whelp, after going through hassles for over a year now I finally am leaving for Basic Training. It will last approximately 8 and a half weeks, in San Antonio, Texas. After that I will get a small break and then it will be over to Monterey, California for 18 months of language school.

This is gonna suck, I don't want to be without internet for 2 months. Internet is a pretty entertaining thing toi have.

Whelp, here's to getting yelled at for 8 weeks. I leave early tommorrow. Merry Christmas everyone! Wheeee.

Noes :< 2 months is way to much. Then again everything else will sound super easy in comparison to not having internet for that long. I will miss you buddy; you once PM:ed me "Lol" after one of my posts, we are pretty much brothers.

Are you going to the Defense Language Institute? The course of study there is ridiculously intense, but it's the best you're going to get. What language, out of curiosity?

Best of luck to you!

Good bye my dear friend I met a second ago, I mourn for you and hope you make swift return to the InterWebZ.

Monterey is about 100 minutes south of where I live, so maybe we'll get a beer somewhere when you're stationed over here

Also, mandarin is pretty cool. (been learning it for about a year now)

I went through last year, starting Dec 28th. It's pretty terrible, but I knew what I was getting into when I went in. When I say terrible, I mean it is just a whole lot of bullshit that I didn't want to have to deal with. I got Dorm Chief on the first day and I have to say I enjoyed it, at least more than I would've had I not been in charge. Nobody fucked with me and I got to tell everyone what to do, but it also felt like 24/7 babysitting. When shit went bad, I got yelled at, but that rarely happened and I didn't give a shit because I knew that no one else could do as good of a job. For me, it made it a rewarding experience and we ended up doing really well. So, if you have some leadership ability, don't be afraid to step up to the plate and become an element leader or maybe dorm chief. It's better than being the Latrine Queen and it'll give you some leadership experience. There are a lot of fuck-ups (and I was in a special operations flight), so get used to it. The MTIs have this culture where they think they're all big and bad, but they're a bunch of incompetent idiots that feel mighty important because they can yell loud. It's really not hard, so don't ever let it get to you. Don't become a big cry baby that has been away from home for the first time and you are being told what to do all the time. When you come out, you'll appreciate your family/friends and regular life way more.

If you have some questions about what to take or anything really, let me know. Good luck Trainee!

Thanks for serving our country, my TL friend.
As a person that's done BMT before (2003) I'll offer my advice.
1. Air Force BMT is not necessarily a cake operation, Unless you get in my old Squadron 322 (aka Candy Land).
2. Expect to be yelled at. Expect to be cussed at (although they are told to keep it to a minimum). Expect to feel dumb from time to time.
3. Remember that the training instructors yell 95% of the time because they are instructed to yell at the trainees, so this is a a bark with no bite. The other 5% is cause some trainee is truly doing something stupid. And it that case the whole squadron ends up doing some form of PT.
4. Do what your told, when your told. And try to keep your head down, unless your in a position of leadership.
5. Make best friends with the Dorm Guard leader. Otherwise you might get stuck pulling dorm guard a whole lot each week. At one point I had it 5 nights in a row. That's a lot of lost sleep time.
6. Go to bed when its taps. Some people stay up and read or whatever. Don't bother, you'll have time to read after basic. And sleep is valuable, you'll be burning a lot of energy each day and you'll need to recoup.
7. Get a wing man asap. Just make sure you can be valuable to each other. If you are good at folding shirts (takes the most time imo), and he can do everything else to perfection then you fold all the shirts and have him fold everything else. or visa versa.
8. Go to some religious function on Sundays. Doesn't matter if your Christian, Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist, Wiccan, etc. Take the time given to you to get out of the Dorm, and not be in Basic training. You'll need the break from the stress. Don't be surprised if you go to the big protestant service and see lots of fellow trainees crying the first week there. Otherwise you'll be stuck in the dorm, pulling dorm guard or being told you have to work on your locker. So Go to some form of church for as long as you can each Sunday.
9. Call your support crew (family, etc.) whenever you get the chance. I don't remember if you should bring a roll of quarters or just dollars (your recruiter should be able to tell you that)
10. Ask people to write you. News from the outside is awesome. Sports, regular news, international news, Esports news, etc. It really helps to have a connection to the outside world. My sister amazingly wrote me almost every single day i was in Basic (still have the letter too).
11. IF you happen to have a sister flight. Stay away from them. They are nothing but trouble in that setting (some would say they are nothing but trouble period).
12. Have fun. Yes you are there to train and learn; but make some friendships and have as many laughs as you can. One of the kids in my flight did a great impression of a training instructor who's name was (and I shit you not) Tech Sargent Fears. Make fun of your instructors, respectfully, but thoroughly. But only when you are sure they are not around.

Good luck sir and God Speed.

Graduated BMT on 24 June of this year. Have been at my first duty station for three months now.

Some advice:

All you really need to know is your reporting statement. If you have that down your set for the next eight and a half weeks. Hopefully you've been practicing it.

Based on your age you'll be dorm chief. Or if there is someone big with muscles they'll pick him. MTIs like to pick the big guys so everyone falls in line.

Recruiter probably told you not to volunteer for anything. Volunteer for patio crew or day room crew. Its by far the easiest of all the jobs they'll assign. You'll be doing something might as well be something easy.

Make sure you have people write to you. It helps. It's only eight weeks but feels way longer than that. Most people will cry the first week. Don't laugh at them even though its kind of funny.

The most important thing to remember is that the MTIs are only human. You'll sleep an average of six hours a day. They'll sleep a lot less. They'll be the first ones awake and the last ones to go to sleep. They are there to HELP and make you into a better person.

Best of luck. Its only eight weeks.
