I went to see my family for christmas vacation, and they have a really, really shitty computer. Luckily I brought my ok-ish laptop, it can't run sc2 (10 fps). atm i'm playing BW, so don't recommend it, I hit D+ on iccup but I really want something else to play. Ive been thinking about dota or wc3, but im not sure. So my question is, what games do you recommend, that don't require good specs, and don't cost too much money. (I have minecraft)

osu! It's really hard at first, but once you get the hang of it, it's really addicting. http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=94258

The Half-Life and (depending on your definition of a good computer) Half-Life 2. There are also many expansion packs for all of these, and good free mods. Right now on steam, the first Half-Life is $7.49 (including all expansions) and the pack of all valve games is $50 (it's a ton of games, so it's actually fairly cheap). Both have pretty good single player modes, and obviously the online play is great. http://store.steampowered.com/app/70.

If you laptop has a good CPU but a bad GPU (as many laptops do), you can try playing some of your old gamecube games using Dolphin http://www.dolphin-emulator.com/. It works pretty well for me (and combined with a USB xbox360 controller it feels pretty good, too). There are also emulators for older systems which tend to be lighter on CPU requirements.

If you have friends to LAN with, OpenArena http://openarena.ws/smfnews.php (a free, open-source Quake 3 Arena clone) is great. It has pretty much no system requirements and is free, which is great. IDK if anyone plays it online (I haven't ever tried, we just used to play it at LANs). There are some good mods for Quake 3 (I recommend World of Padman).

How about brood war? CS, Quake live doesnt need a good pc too I'm guessing, but obviously needs a good connection. And any of the old rpgs mentioned above.

Heretic yes!! The first game I played on my cd-rom drive, it came with the creative 6x drive I bought, was so awesome!

Might I suggest Dungeons of Dredmore, its a roguelike with a lot of humor and fun. Runs on basically a computer with gameboy color computer power.

Last I checked it costs like 5 bucks on steam.

If you have not played them,

Baldur's Gate: Complete
Baldur's Gate II: Complete
Planescape: Torment

They are all 50% off on www.gog.com at the moment. They are from around 2000, will run on just about anything and are simply stunning games if you have any interest in RPGs at all.

Each game is up for 4.99. Just silly not to buy them for that price.

When I don't feel like playing BW, I like to play SNES games on an emu.
Also back when I had a crap computer I played alot of CS1.6 and Final Fantasy 8.
I want to go back to being weird. I like being weird. Weird is all I've got. That and my sweet style.

I asked a lot of these same questions once upon a time and I learned a bunch of things. Try sorting through here. I never compiled anything into the OP but a lot of people were super helpful and gave a lot of good information/resources etc.

How shitty is shitty? Fable: The Lost Chapters is crazy fun. And if it's your thing, American McGee's Alice is a pretty cool trip.

Edit: also, sometimes I like to replay Ocarina of Time or Majora's Mask on Project64.

Seconding this.

Also Terraria, sandbox minecraft-ish game in 2d (in case you didn't know about it)

Steam also has a ton of indie games with low reqs, ones I personally strongly recommend are Jamestown (a horizontal bullethell game if you're into those), Fractals, or any of the BIT.TRIP games.

Download a PSX emulator. There's tons of good Playstation 1 games you can play on crappy PCs. Final Fantasy 7, Final Fantasy Tactics, Suikoden, Star Ocean, etc.

Quake Live, Emulator games (Super Mario 64 may I suggest? lol), Any WC3 or earlier game, and that opens up the possibility to lots of great UMS games.

Yes. And this for LOTS of games. All for free. You see what they need to run on and then play them. All. For free. HF :D

A lot of the command and conquer games are free to d/l and play these days... If their comp is 'really, really shitty' then those games would be perfect.
