You gotta man up and play! Suffer through a few games and gain experience in order to calm down. Familiarize yourself so you don't panic.

Or just watch streams all day long.

Do half and half. Play an hour or two of customs/ team games, and then an hour or two of ladder.

Or start off on the ladder, and if you start to tilt, you can take a short break by playing a few less stressful customs and team games

To get over my ladder fear, all I did was just click the "find match" without thinking about it. Now I'm not even scared about it, it's a lot more fun.

You're welcome

But you need to commit! Resolve to play on that ladder, no matter what. Don't wuss out! Then by all means, play some customs or team games after a solid group of ladder games. There's no reason that you have to stop playing the other types of games

How do I control myself during the game? I often shake a lot during the game, sometimes so much that my hands actually move halfway across the keyboard involuntarily during a game.

The answer is simple - play against it

A while ago I had this as well but when you begin you will quickly realize that it gets easier and easier the longer you play. Its like riding a ghost train for the first time - as soon as you realize that all the monsters arent real you will ease up and it will be absolutely easy to endure a couple of rides until you have to rest ^.^

Don't think to much into it, just play! After a game or two your hands will ease up, I promise <3

Detatch your ego from it! You have to realize that winning or losing a game on the ladder has nothing to do with your self worth- this can be a big subconscious barrier. Come to peace with the fact that you will lose a LOT of games- the biggest pros in the world lose a LOT of games- and don't get hung up on it. Good luck!

I got sc2 when it came out and I never played a 1v1, 2v2, 3v3 or 4v4. I play against computers with friends all the time but I have a complete fear of playing against REAL players. I don't know what rank I'll get on the ladder or how people might respond to my poor game play. Even custom games are scary because they are real people. How do I get over that?

+ Show Spoiler +
That was a complete lie. It might seem kinda stupid to add this spoiler tag but maybe within that 1 second you were wondering why would I be so afraid to play 2v2s and custom games. You might wonder this because it is nothing to be afraid of. 1v1 is the same exact thing as team games, no one will bother you about how good or bad you are and that is what the mute button is for if they do say anything, laddering 1v1 for rank should be no different than your 2v2 rank.

I'll admit it. When I first got sc2 I felt a little nervous/weird pressing the find opponent button for 1v1 and team games, I felt like these games were now worth something so losing is something I must absolutely avoid. Here is the secret though. It takes losing like 20 games to make you not care anymore lol. You realize that losing on ladder is so common and wont really hurt you at all. Your very first game on sc2 may have seemed scary until you played a few games. Your first team games may have been scary until you played a few of those as well. The same thing will happen once you play a few 1v1 games. No one is watching you or tracking you. Being last place is bronze is something no one will notice or laugh at you for it.

To be honest, I played broodwar for almost 10 years and I kinda wanted to get bronze. I wanted to start on the bottom and be proud to work my way all the way up. Be optimistic about the situation of landing in bronze by realizing you will feel the pride of more promotions than someone who starts in diamond or masters. I played bw for so long and even I felt weird at first hitting the search button because everything was so new again.

Just think that you may not do so well but that is perfectly fine. Jump into the game and keep playing. You may have to enter a situation where you REALLY want to win a game and end up losing. You will feel really bad about that, but the moment you press the search button again, that will be the moment you won't be afraid anymore.

I have a problem with my hands and shaking as well. First my hands are freezing cold, which makes playing super difficult. And I have so much adrenaline that I shake like crazy. I always find excuses to not ladder, usually I just end up trollin up TL

Nerves are a hard thing to conquer but you have to understand that they are normal and that it can take a while to feel comfortable. Picking up a practice partner can help, if you go over the basic sort of play you're going to encounter on the ladder you should be less stressed out when it's happening there; this especially applies to cheese, if you've practised against it you'll freak out less when you face it. Also play slowly for a while, it's going to cost you wins at first but make every key press and mouse click deliberate. Trying to frantically multitask while your body is shaking will not help since it leads to missclicks which leads to other problems that tend to cause more panicking. If you can slow your body and your mental process down it will be easier to get into a comfortable state of mind.

Also try to have a constant plan or goal in mind, I've personally found that as soon as I'm unsure of what I should be doing that's when I get jittery and make mistakes because I'm trying to do everything at once.

Convince yourself that you're bad and no one gives a shit about your games, and that no matter how poorly you play it'll always be more beneficial to your game than not playing. At least that's what I did

if you spent 2 minutes looking around on tl youd have found at least 3000 different threads of people having the exact same fears as you, and the solution is always the same, man up and play.

practice a build for each match up 50 times against the AI.

then hit that find match button and realise that your plans got completely fucked cos some probe decided to steal your 2nd geyser.

What do you learn from this? SC is unpredictable. Infact, it's so unpredictable that you might just win a game and feel good about it. So you quickly hit that find match button again. Then you do it 15 more times. Problem solved.

^These. I've never been incredibly afraid of laddering 1v1 but that fear of losing can be tremendous. Go with a super risky build that you know you will likely lose with and the more you lose, the more comfortable you will be with it and it should become less scary. A good way to get over the fear is to go with a build you know will be difficult to win with. Do a monobattle in 1v1 and pick exotic units and if you lose then you can contribute it to the build and not necessarily take it personally if you lose.

Just remember it's a game... have fun. After a while ladder fear just goes and you don't care that much.

How are 2v2's fun though? :/
