Hello, This year, I am the only single in the family, so I have no excuse not to go meet up with my parents. We, meaning my parents and I, decided to get some good DVDs and watch them. I wanted to ask you guys for your help in finding some movies that might work. ^^ The movies don't have to be Christmas related, maybe it is even better, if they aren't, because my father is a bit on the Dawkins front.
My parents are in their fifties and I am in my late twenties. Both my parents are studied musicians, so we are interested in classical music. A good documentary like Enigma about Swjatoslaw Richter or a great concert would be appreciated. Could be modern music, but could also be something more popular like Lang Lang. Also politics are our interests. Especially things like foreign politics, cold war, Middle east, intelligence, EU, corruption and such could work.
Fiction movies could be something like The Great Illusion by Renoir or Billy Wilder movies like The Apartment. So, some substance is needed, or else the old man will get offended. ^^ Also, not to much violence would be good. To give you some more names of directors I would consider: Hitchcock, Bergman, Wells, Kar-wai, Almodovar, Kaurismaki. I think, you get the idea. Something in between Classic and intellectual movie.
Wall-E for example would be a movie I would not watch with them, because older people often have problems with Anime and it could also be considered to kitschy/cheesy by my father.
In 1984 East Berlin, an agent of the secret police, conducting surveillance on a writer and his lover, finds himself becoming increasingly absorbed by their lives.

Really good film.
but then you gotta deal with the awkward sex scenes. there's what, two? three? in that movie. i don't remember... i know there's one for sure
oh just realized you already replied to that. hah, ignore this. >.>
Well... Dunno if this is to sugar sweet, but I liked this movie a lot.
Les Chorites:
Saw it for the first time at a choir festival - World Festival of singing (boys and mens choir) in 2004 (i think). If you already have not watched this you almost have to. Good music and a fine story.
Let the Right One In, its new (compared to Metropolis at least) I have only seen this specific version and it was well done and enjoyable although it likely will require subtitles unless you can understand Swedish. Also it is quite a bit more graphic in terms of the levels of violence and blood shed.
Oh brother where art thou, about a couple of cons escaping from a chain gang. Coen brother == good. I'm a cyborg, but that's ok. A girl thinks she's a cyborg, good times in the asylum. Saving face. About a Chinese lesbian girl who has to come out of the closet, her mother is pregnant without a father. Clash of Cn tradition and the US of A. Seven samurai. Bit of a classic, but it's nice and slow, good for christmas. Antique bakery. Three guys run a patisserie. Good times. Il mare. Jun Ji-Hyun <3
You really should not skip animated films. The toy story trilogy, how to train your dragon, tangled, shreks and others are all awesome movies not cheesy or childish at all.
thanks everyone. It is great that our community has a lot of members that use their time to help. btw, I realized too late that the title is a bit misleading and will learn from that. ^^
