I'm in junior year now. This was the year I was supposed to get my act back together, escape the school slump I've been in since the beginning of high school. However, I haven't been able to do so yet, even 4 months into the school year. I'm actually subconsciously becoming increasingly apathetic towards school. I can recognize this but I can't will myself to do anything about it.
Every morning is a struggle to wake up, even if I go to sleep extra early. The little voice in the back of my mind is trying to tell me that there isn't a point in going to school, it blows ass, etc. but eventually I just drag my ass out of bed and get on with my day somehow.
The class I'm having the most trouble with is AP Computer Science, which my peers, family and I all find weird because I'm very computer savvy (don't wanna sound like I'm tooting my own horn but I reckon I am). I find it very difficult to focus in class and lose out on a lot of lecture information. I try to catch up with the textbook, but it's just so bland and outdated. I'm looking into purchasing some supplementary material, such as the AP Computer Science review book by Barron's. I'd really like to catch up in this class as it is a subject that interests me and I am even thinking about going into that field.
Also, junior year is also the "college" year. I've been slacking in this field a lot. I'm so fucked in this regard because: A. My grades aren't that great. I mean, I'm confident in my ability to bring them up but I have no confidence in my drive to do so. This must be changed, but how? B. I haven't taken a PSAT, any SATs, or ACTs. I need to buckle down and study for them. I've taken some practice ones in middle school (legit ones from review books I borrowed from the library) and did really well. No reason I can't replicate these on a real exam, right? C. I don't have any extracurricular activities. D. There is no way in hell anyone will write me a recommendation. I am admittedly a horrible student.
Additionally, since my last blog post, my Starcraft skills have been degrading; I have not played at a competitive (for Platinum) level in nearly 5 months since I started playing LoL and DotA 2 recently with friends. As such, I've been toying with the idea of relearning Starcraft completely. New race (maybe, I <3 toss), optimized hotkeys, correcting bad habits, etc. I'll probably end up buying a new copy of Starcraft sometime after midterms if I do decide to go this route.
Regarding females, still no luck. I suppose I'll find one eventually. Not a super high priority right now, but I'd like an emotional partner. I can't honestly say I have a "best" friend; I don't really trust anyone, so having someone who I can confide in would be amazing for me. I reckon I just need to put myself out there more (as in put myself in awkward spots and practice handling them) and care for my appearance more. Up until last week my hair was ridiculously raggy and messy and all my clothes are extremely baggy. I'm also pretty paranoid of how I smell. I bought a thing of cologne (Hugo by Hugo Boss) but I don't wanna seem douchey by wearing it. That ties in well with the "putting myself in awkward spots" thing actually. I'll probably start wearing it after Christmas so I have an excuse for using it.
Finally, fitness. I expressed I wanted to get leaner in my last blog post. I purchased some equipment and I'll probably consult someone and get help making an exercise regimen. Maybe set a goal for myself, like "six-pack by the end of the year." or something along those lines.
So overall:
Goals: Top priorities -Catch up in APCS -Study for/take SAT's and ACT's. -Get to know my teachers -Fix sleep schedule -Get motivated you douche
Medium priorities -Play an extracurricular sport -Get my permit/junior license -Get a fucking girlfriend you idiot -GET FIT
Low priority -Get back into Starcraft, back to Plat by ~March. -Get Plat in LoL -Get better at DotA 2
Questions for TL: -Recommended reading for AP CS? -Advice on meeting girls outside of school? -What sports do you guys play? -How to get motivated? -Tips on adjusting sleep schedules? -Have you ever found yourself on a self destructive path and how did you stop it? -More stuff because it's 3 am right now (school tomorrow, whoo hoo /sarcasm) and I can't remember anything.

I think you might be biting off more than you can chew...........academics, extracurriculars, girlfriend, games, fitness?
It's unrealistic to expect to accomplish all of these by the end of the year, and if that happens it can lead to a lot more stress than it's worth. Cut your goals down to something more achievable.
|
I will go through and do all the questions in TL with a few comments on the priotities:
Recommended Reading: If you have a good professor you'll be learning much more than the test tells you that you have learned (I took AP Comp and got a 3, yet have the highest consistent writing in my Eng Comp II class and I am a CS/Math major. Everyone shits themselves when I show them my rough drafts that are better than their finals.) The reading should come from your professor and the AP CS books themselves. Unfortunately I cannot guide you past this stage in this case.
Advice on meeting girls outside school: I found my love, and soon to be wife, by mutual friends. Go be social with your guy friends and be sorta flirty when you're out and about, shopping for your new copy of SC2, seeing a movie, and go places (music events etc). Getting a job is the BEST way to start making friends outside of school and therefore, finding a few girlfriends along the way.
What sports do I play? I played football and ran track through school. You may also want to try acting, I tried it my senior year and really regretted not trying it earlier because I wanted to be part of it more often. I also wrestled for a while until it got to be too much, as our team did 4+ hours of work daily.
Motivation: This can be the trickiest but motivation comes from knowing what will make you happiest in the long run. I stay motivated to do a long and strenous paper because it'll be worth the grade I want, and I want to have a good grad school so I have to have good grades. By knowing the links to your priorities it can make it easier to keep motivated. When things get monotonous take extra focus on improvement (IE SC2 getting every worker out ASAP or running form). Personally I tend to just let myself get lost in work and hammer my head at it until I find that one hole for my attention to get lost in. It's how I do a lot of stuff done in life, whether I want to do it or not. Also, just doing what is asked of you is a very good and charitable habit to get into and helps keep motivation requirement low.
Adjusting sleep schedules: Cut sleep down the first few days (IE up till 3 and wake up at 8-9) then no naps until 9-10 and then you can sleep. A few days of this routine resets my schedule usually. It takes help sometimes, but no caffeine past 6 so that it all goes away and you don't just stay up till 12 again.
It doesn't work in reverse, oversleeping then going to bed early. It just doesn't with your schedule being extremely late. It does work in short-term fixes (IE finals week sleep schedule).
Self Destruction Yes. I have. It was very bad for myself and I almost took my life because of it. I stopped it by really focusing on identifying who I am and what I stand for very clearly and setting clear goals, priorities, and things that make life worth living. I stopped it with psychology and sticking to the things I love and keep trying to do the things I have to do. If you want to hear more, please PM me.
Priorities: 1 don't beat yourself up. It ain't good for you 'son. I see an academics first and then social trend, which is very good. Hopefully you can find a place where both can happen (such as NHS or an academic group who sport/act). The thing I noticed, though, is that they are all "far" goals. They need steps, plans of action, in order to be effective for anyone. So start mapping through each one in your free time so that you have more definitive ways to spend your time that you want to use working toward each goal.
GOod luck man!

I guess your not as good with computers as you think.

Haha, we're in similar positions-ish. Thing is, I started becoming involved in HS slightly earlier than junior year. Since fresh, I've been in AcDec, did JROTC for 2 years, and have been doing sports. This year though, I started to reach out to people, join Speech and Debate, do NHS, and start studying.I agree that sports and intellectual activities are super awesome and get you friends. However, I believe you should drop some things off your list. Anything related to gaming? DROP. Games are the worst distraction you need right now, and I'm trying to weed myself off them too. Games are so time consuming, even if you're putting them as low priority. Rhetorical questions here-->Remember the MLG you watched? 3 days wasted that could have gone towards studying/getting-fit/getting-girls, etc. Remember the GSL finals you stayed up for? Precious hours of sleep gone. Remember the mass gaming you did during first semester? Hours, if not days weeks wasted. I'm not saying that games are completely evil, but if you want to accomplish EVERYTHING you just listed, you're going to DIE. Even the medium priorities are going to be hard to attain. You're going to need to be motivated throughout your entire day if you want to get all of those things done. You're already behind on your PSATs, I don't even think that you can take them anymore. What you need to do right now is get your grades up and start studying for the SAT and ACT. I'm doing the exact same thing. You'll need to limit yourself from the internet, from starcraft...even from Teamliquid. If you want to get all those things done, you'll need to start, NOW. If you want to stop yourself from going down a destructive path, you should have started 2 years ago as a freshman, aka you need to start NOW.
And about a girlfriend? Cross that off the list. You'll need to prove that you're smart and socially adaptable before that happens. Relationships take away precious time from school anyways. Seriously, what's more important, school and your future, or games and a girlfriend?
|
Getting fit and getting better at starcraft should be top priority and getting a girlfriend and fixing sleep schedule should be low priority imo.

+ Show Spoiler +I am a woman-- this is how I think, and how I believe most women think.
Everyone has issues and problems. They have days they don't feel like doing anything, and periods of time when they are depressed or not getting anywhere with their life. Not everyone shares the same priorities. Some people just don't give a shit about school, or about getting promoted at their job, or what have you.
But, until you care about something and make an effort to achieve that, you will probably have a good deal of difficulty getting a girl friend (or close guy friend even). It's a big turn off to other people when you just don't care about anything. It makes you difficult to bond with, and hard for others to find respect for you. In the end, when you don't care about anything, you become miserable, but you are unwilling to change your situation even with help and encouragement from others. No one wants to be around someone like that.
SO-- The moral of the story is, do all (or some) of these things you want to do, and profit! Good luck dood! :D

Hey hey,
So I can't help you much with your exam problems, but I can give you some advice. I had a pretty downward spiral in my senior year; one thing led to another after my then-girlfriend slept with and stayed with my best friend. I started to not sleep properly, eat properly, do stuff outside of school, etc etc. My life was a constant circle of misery and I couldn't fix it... And then again, because of the sadness and realization of what I was doing, it was like watching a dumb horror movie chick go into that least possible safe place, and screaming "DONT DO IT YOU DUMB BITCH" but being incapable of doing anything about it. Except that dumb bitch was me. Shyeah.
Since then, I've gotten into Uni, met a girl, gotten engaged, got a job as a SC2 coach/mapper/organizer, and am living a pretty solid life. But the road here wasn't an easy one. I had a pretty easy out of my predicament when my car was hit on the highway going 150km/hr by a suicidal who jumped the median. I spent 3 months in the hospital, and happened to meet my fiancee there (we were young so they put us in the same ward). So I had a pretty easy out as I was getting patched up and so was she (and we were there ALMOST the same amount of time), and we came out of there best friends.
But the infinitely harder road was the one where I saw this life of mine, all in pieces, and went "well shit, I have to put this back together somehow." First came school. I had terrible grades (for me), and terrible motivation. I know I'm intelligent, but I couldn't see it then, and just told myself I shouldn't bother trying cause I won't get anything done.
Well, for a while it was true. I lacked motivation to do anything at all in school, and my grades continued to stagnant. But slowly, I realized a few very important things.
1- Schedules are awesome, if you can keep to it 2- Sometimes you just have to force yourself 3- You will ALWAYS bite off more than you can chew when making plans of what 'I will do' 4- Will-Power is an amazing thing, but it's often in short supply 5- Prioritization is great, but often falls by the way-side of interests.
You ask for advice, and here is mine, along with the above story.
Firstly, don't think that you can/will motivate yourself immediately. I can tell you that, given good grades, you will get into a good school (distant, intangible), you will make your parents happy (immediate, hard to see), or it will snowball (something from nothing? wtf?), but all of those things don't really motivate you. In my experience, just telling yourself (for the first little while), I HAVE TO DO THIS, I HAVE TO DO THIS, is really the only way to accomplish things. Write yourself a little list of reasons why you want to do what you want to do. "I want to play SC2 well because I believe it is an intelligent game and..." "I want to do well in school because.." and focus the reasons ON YOU. Don't say you want to do well in school for the rents, to get into a good collage, because all those things are separate from your mind, and therefor outside of your realm of control somewhat, which will prompt your mind to disregard them as impossible or out of your control. Focusing reasons ON YOU as an individual, and your emotional state, will let you grow as a person, and EVENTUALLY, WITH TIME, let you find motivation again. It will not come quick. You will have to force yourself. But it will come with time.
Which brings me to Scheduling your life. Alot of people have a weird back and forth about schedules. They're good, they're bad, they're awesome, they give you and your family AIDS. But the thing about Schedules is that they FORCE you to do something within a certain time frame. Yes, that might not be enough time to do it, but it conforms you to a specific routine. In and of itself, this might not be a good thing, if you are a motivated and self-starting person, but alas, that seems to not be the case. Well, I'm both of those things, but I sure wasn't back in the day. And I still use schedules for tasks where I feel I will lose my will to complete.
Sample Day for me atm (Finals Season):
1100 Wake up, morning routine, breakfast, watch new sc2games, read news, etc |establish contact with the missustobe 1200 Sit down to work 1215-1500 Subject A 1500-1600 Lunch/dinner/break 1615-2200 Subject B 2200-0000 Relax time |call missustobe
This is assuming I am not with my fiancee at the time and have no work to do, etc etc. Sometimes I drive her to work. Sometimes I stay at her house (my living arrangement is super fucked atm, b/c our parents hate eachother, and while we both live alone, it's hard to merge bc of the parents), sometimes this or sometimes that. But generally I stick to the above schedule ADAMANTLY. Even if I feel like I don't have enough time, I STOP. I stop because that is what I said I would do, and if I find myself wanting to do more, then this will carry on into the morrow. Rather than working till you hate yourself, the subject, and everything around you. With this case, it's better to PLAN AHEAD and give yourself a daily dose TOO SMALL than it is to cramp up your few days before the deadline. Seriously, 1 hour of work for a week yields 7 hours. This is actually a pretty significant amount of time. What I'm trying to say here isn't your typical "space your time" bullshit. But the thing is, if you spread yourself out, you will find yourself more motivated (by force of habit and by yearning for completion), that you will keep with the schedule.
Sleep falls in the same vault. Just lay down at 0100 everyday, or whatever you feel appropriate, and lay there till you sleep. Daydream, fantasize, toss, turn, whatever. Just keep to a good time. Your body will eventually just go "fuck it, I'm sleeping", and you will adjust.
Girls---> Instead of thinking like you are (paranoid, not trusting, self-doubting), start being assertive and a go-getter. That cologne thing, wear it, and wear it proud. If someone asks, just say "I like how it smells". No need to be an arrogant prick, but be self-assertive. Cut back your hair, take care of your appearance, wear the clothes you feel best in, and tidy up. Oh, and once you're tidy, you're tidy. No need to think that you're not or that you aren't up to somebody's standard. And for the companion thing, think about whether you really need a girl, or a friend? yes, my fiancee is my best friend, but I also have three other friends that I confide in and talk to, and they serve as a completely platonic accomplice to me. They know everything about me and vice versa. And you know, that's enough. Generally, the harder you look for a girlfriend, rather than just a friend, the less you will find. But if you find a girl pretty, if you wanna strike up a convo, just do it. If she's a bitch, fuck her, not worth your time, and move along.
This might seem very straightforeword, maybe a little emotionally shallow, maybe a little arrogant. Well, being self-assured isn't any of those things. It's just about knowing yourself to be who you are. And that is a very very odd thing in High School Most people, from the douches to the pricks to the nerds, are unsure of who they are or what they want to do. So they hide it with a mask of the above. If you know who you are, people will come to you. And if they shun you, they really really aren't worth your time, and if you bend to them, they will end up dragging you downwards (don't let that happen to you).
Sports fill into the Schedule thing again. I play Squash every mwf (in non final season) with one of my friends, and go on runs/walks with my fiancee almost everyday (just to explore a little, even if we take a car to get there, we'll walk in a nearby forest, etc.)
Anyway, hope this helps. Write back for questions, comments, or concerns!

Hey man don't worry your not the only one that this happens too <3 The same lack of care happened to me in but in ninth grade lol. Funny i also took AP CS my junior year and sucked at it. Sorry to say i dont have any amazing advise that will just wake you up and want to get your shit done. However i can tell you what will happen if you stay on this path, yea you will probably make it through High school cause its a joke. But once college starts you will not pass with this attitude or mindset. I work now full time and i won't lie i dont really mind working but some days i do wonder what would of happened if i got my shit together. Could of been a whole different story if you know what i mean... In the end only you can push your self to get your grades up and you will have to live with this decision.. Good luck with it, I hope you figure it out.

Well, I figure it'll fit right into my schedule, I have 9+ hours after school and even more time on the weekends to get shit done. It's not like I have extracurricular activities taking up time

You need to prioritize. Sometime people can do many things at once and still have quality, while others need to learn the proper way to do it. But if you are messing things up a bit, better start slow.
|
why do you need a girlfriend so much?
cause you really want to? doesnt sound like it tbh "-Get a fucking girlfriend you idiot" sounds more like "all my friends have one, i got to have one myself". should be rly low priority if it isnt rly YOU who wants this. This acutally goes for some of your points.
Just aim for what u love and rly want to do for now. Sticking with too many priorities could possibly hurt you.
-Catch up in APCS -Study for/take SAT's and ACT's. -Get motivated
These are the only really important things besides that i think. And dont call yourself a douche, wont help ya.

actually, I went through this exact same phase. I started trying to remember why in the hell am I going to school? Especially since I already know everything (literally everything) about the subject I was planning on majoring in when i went to college anyway (Computer Engineering). School was a waste of time for me, but it isnt for everybody. I wasnt a very social person. I had plenty of friends, but I just didnt trust to many people after a while.
Im not really sure what happened with me though. I believe it was my last relationship that fucked me up but i dont want to blame it on that. Teenage love... *sigh

Some of this advice helps me. O_O. So I must say thank you.
I'm a senior in high school going through a downward...path...thing. I can't quite recapture how I was last year.
School is #1. After my first semester I decided to quit games (then, xbox, but i managed to find LoL and get around to playing sc2 in the process) because I did poorly. Fuck everything else.
I quit track for school also. Sc2 is fun and nice but honestly, don't play it as much as you plan. Chances are you won't (i didn't between no time and ladder fear).
Girls, fuck them.
Fitness, just set a time to run in the morning or after school. Or join a spring sport (track <3).
-
-Advice on meeting girls outside of school? hang out with friends, be friendly but confident.
-What sports do you guys play? track for 2 years. so good.
-Tips on adjusting sleep schedules? i set mine around GSL in january and ive mostly followed through except for periods without GSL or with me being unmotivated (see next part). I slept after school around 5-7 PM and woke up at 2AM to watch GSL and do hw. Granted i wasnt the perfect student and i didnt do all my hw but I could usually finish. As far as staying on the schedule, my doctor told me not to go past maybe 2 hours before or after the intended time. don't take naps. Its all self will.
-Have you ever found yourself on a self destructive path and how did you stop it? right now. I'm barely doing hw, barely motivated, cutting class, upping game time + thinking about drugs. its not as bad as it sounds actually. The best way to get out of it is to just do work. I dont want to study or do hw but i spent the past 6 hours doing all my hw + studying for a calc B/C test tomorrow.
Make sure your mindset is good. Lie to yourself if you have to but when you do something, say "FUCK YES I CAN DO THIS". when you run a mile, run with that mindset; one step after the next. otherwise you'll never finish. I think that's what i learned from track above all else.
Regarding SAT, etc
You're not too late lol. I took my first SAT in June, SAT subjects in May after AP exams (i highly recommend it), and i took another SAT in october. I didnt go to the november one cause honestly, fuck.
Most colleges don't NEED your SAT scores till about a month after everything's due. For example University of California need them by end of January (latest SAT you should take is December btw), but apps are due end of Nov.
Study a lot before your SAT. Do practice tests cause they help the most, but review basic math/tricks/vocab too. A certain time every day. Before my october for about a week I took an hour every night after waking up, before GSL to study and take practice tests and see what i did wrong. while i didnt actually finish the schedule i set out (i had 5 full tests so i did week 1 reading week 2 writing week 3 math. i did each subject's FULL sections on an exam on mon, wed, and fri, as there are only 3 sections for reading, etc out of 10 for the SAT. tues, thurs I would review concepts, and compare mon's preliminary, and friday's final while analyzing each mistake. Saturday I would take the full exam practice in the morning) it helped a lot.
3 weeks before should be good :D.
-How to get motivated? fucking do it. think about all the privileges you have, your happy family. think POSITIVE about yourself, dont call yourself dumb or stupid. you CAN do it.
oh and find friends to motivate you too. even just classmates. someone told me once, look at the #1 person in your school and do like they do,

I agree with some of the previous posters that you should cut down on the number of things you are trying to improve at one time and focus on the things that really matter to you. Sometimes having your friends' perspectives will help a lot in making these decisions so make sure to talk to them.
Taking up an extracurricular sport is a great idea and will help with a lot of the problems you think you are having. Even something like the cross-country team will help get you fit, improve your focus, and make you feel better about yourself in front of your friend and with girls.
To do better in class you will need to find out why you are getting distracted in class. In addition to actually knowing the material, teachers often have their own ideas of what good intangible performance indicators are in their subject. Rather than focusing on catching up with the material in the class, you should focus on learning the current material and refer back to the material you are behind on only if necessary and relevant. Tell your teacher that you aren't happy with your performance in the class and ask him/her if they think you make any mistakes repeatedly in the class. It will help the teacher if you have 4 or 5 of your past assignments on hand when you ask them so that they can remind themselves of why you got marked off.
Answers to the questions.
-Recommended reading for AP CS?
Outside reading material for a class should be used as a supplement to the material your teacher provides. I would recommend only going to the web when you have spent 5-10 minutes thinking about a problem or a piece of code and still can't think of a way to solve it. Regurgitating an answer that you don't understand (and is possibly wrong) is worse than getting an answer wrong and then learning how to do it correctly. Try to challenge yourself by limiting yourself to the course material. (I didn't take AP CS, but I did take AP English, Calc, Bio and Physics).
-Advice on meeting girls outside of school?
I hope you mean meeting girls from your school outside of class time and not meeting girls that do not go to your school. Dating "advice" is always sketchy. Just ask a girl you like if they want to go to the movies or go out to dinner or do something after school. If you feel like you are saying or doing something stupid or cheesy, just realize that everyone else does the same thing. We aren't all Don Juan.
-What sports do you guys play?
Since I have screws in my foot holding my ankle in place, I could never do anything that involved a lot of running, so I played Golf in the fall and Volleyball in the spring. Although I had played golf before high school, I had never played volleyball before and it turned out to be a lot of fun. I would recommend a team sport over an individual sport if you don't have a lot of time because individual sports require a lot of practice outside of the normal "after school" practice hours. Talking with some of the team members will give you a good idea of what to expect.
-How to get motivated?
Set a schedule and stick to it. Make things that you don't like into a challenge so that you don't waste your time. For the classes I hated, I often set a 30 minute or 1 hour timer for homework and did what I could until the timer was done. Homework isn't designed to take 4-6 hours to complete. Working for 1-2 hours on normal homework and then another hour on longer projects should be enough. Use the feedback you get from your assignments to learn the material if you fall behind. Spending time trying to learn old material often distracts you from learning the current material and should be only done if necessary (you were sick and missed class or if you have to learn it to understand current material). Reward yourself for working so hard by playing games for 1-2 hours. That's already 5 hours of time accounted for after school. If you have sports practice and dinner on top of that, you should already be near time to go to sleep.
-Tips on adjusting sleep schedules?
I'm not going to lie, I think school starts too early on average. I would almost always be half asleep through my first 2 periods so I scheduled them to be something I didn't care about (foreign language or gym or band). Sports help a lot in keeping a sleeping schedule because they will make you tired enough that you might have to fight to do your homework before you fall asleep. My best tips are to never eat anything really sugary or drink anything with caffeine in it more than 4 hours before you want to fall asleep. Being stressed also keeps you awake, so keeping a schedule for homework and play will help with that.
-Have you ever found yourself on a self destructive path and how did you stop it?
Find something you like to do (that involves physically interacting with other people, not online games) and make it your hobby. It sounds weird but for me keeping an aquarium and working in a family owned aquarium store was amazingly helpful for me during high school (in fact if I could make a living running an aquarium store I would). No matter how stressful life became I could always ease my mind by watching the fish and taking care of them. It gave me a sense of responsibility and personal pride to take care of my fish and keep them healthy (I can imagine that this would work with any pet). The fish would also act as a personal stress indicator because when I was highly stressed I would forget to take care of the fish and they would become sick as a result. When that happened I knew that I was pushing myself too hard and I would take steps to reduce my stress level. I don't know if it works with everyone, but it worked for me.
-More stuff because it's 3 am right now (school tomorrow, whoo hoo /sarcasm) and I can't remember anything.
Good night, hope some of this helps.

AP CS Advice --
Go up to your teacher after class and say "I am falling behind can I come after school to work on the lessons?" This will show your teacher that you are willing to improve and it will give you some good time where there are not a lot of distractions to ask a lot of questions. Go in after school for an hour or two and work on the homework/whatever and ask him or her some questions. Teachers LOVE this, even in college. Going to office hours and asking questions and acting like you care about the subject can easily raise your grade a whole letter, not to mention the fact that you are actually learning more in the process. Also, don't feel like you are too far behind to catch up because I'd bet that if you are willing to put in the effort your teacher will be willing to help you out. Don't feel stupid to ask for help
