Hello,

So today I'm feeling really sick. So I'm going to get right down to it. I have some time off in these coming months and I want to get healthier. I want to gain muscle and lose weight. (Mostly lose weight) This is something I've put off doing for too long.

To force myself to start doing this I'm going to post a little challenge here. I'm going to post my weight and maybe some measurements (like stomach and chest width or something) and I challenge you to do the same.

I plan on posting my weight and what not every week, but the goal of the challenge is at the end of the month. I want to lose more weight (healthily) then others who accept this challenge. So anyway here is my information.

I weigh 315 pounds.
My stomach all the way around my bellybutton is 52inches.
My chest is somewhere at 48inches.

So, thats my information. Feel free to post yours and we can compare at the end of the month. I really hope others will take this challenge. And yes I do know I'm rather fat! First step is trying, right?

Here is a pic to motivate me even more.[image loading]
(Credits for the picture go to Silverfire)

Anyone up for doing this with me ?

mad respect to you, Sheth, for doing this. I, however, am underweight for my height (5'10" 140lbs) and will be spending the upcoming months trying to get muscle.

You know what, Shawn. You're on. I am now overweight and while I don't need to lose that much, I do need to lose some.

I weigh 190 lbs at the moment. Don't know chest / stomach measurements. Since I can't compete with you raw numbers, how about we compete % towards our goal? I'm trying to get down to 165-170 lbs.

Thanks for the motivation!

Good luck man, I went from 275 to 180 in about a year and a half. Best advice i can give is to not try too hard at first, or you will go right back. Slowly eat less/ be more active.

My friend's actually done a one month major weight loss regime. He barely worked out but his main thing was diet. I'm not sure how picky you are with food but the 'tomato soup' diet works amazingly. It's basically a soup consisting of tomatoes and other vegetables (celery's awesome) and then you eat it twice a day (along with another meal that you can regulate yourself) and after eating it for a month he went from 220->190 and then down to 150 after a while of doing this plus working out.

Best of luck Sheth hope you have good success!

Good luck, Sheth! I'll tell you that the first thing you can do to shed pounds is to completely abolish soda, juice, and alcohol from your diet. If you only drink water, you'll stay hydrated for your workouts and you'll take in 0 calories or carbs in the process.

Sounds like an awesome challenge, Sheth! I don't really need to lose weight, but I do need to keep myself in shape for the spring Ultimate Frisbee season and since Thanksgiving I've been really slacking off. I will work hard as long as you work hard!

I'd love to join you, something I've been putting off for a long time too. I don't really have "inches" to lose, but I need to eat healthier/be healthier/lose a bit of weight.

Weight: Around 187 I'd guess. I'll weigh later.

I'm with you, Sheth. 160 lbs right now, I want to lose around 20 lb of fat. I haven't been able to exercise much since I got a hairline fracture in my right ankle from running a lot, and I had to stop running even when it healed because of fears that it would develop into a stress fracture.

Let's do this :D

Keep the faith! Some tips from someone who's down about 40 pounds in the past 4 months:

Don't measure yourself every day. You'll just get frustrated.
The number isn't definite.
Get in exercise, even if it isn't super intense. You'd be surprised what walking 15 minutes a day does for your body and your self-esteem.
Make your easy days easy, make your hard days hard.
Treats are not rewards for good accomplishments. Food is not the only way to socialize. Food makes you live, restrict any sweets to maybe once a week.
Portion a bunch of shit. I know that once I opened a bag or a box of something, it was tough to put away. Just portion the shit out of it.

Good luck man, I'm trying to lose some weight myself. People like Incontrol and Tyler makes fat gamers like myself look bad, and I can't have that. :p

But I'm taking it slow, my goal is doing it over a year, so that my body can keep up with the loss.

Thanks thanks, sadly I already pretty much drink only water. I can get rid of orange juice, but I'm sick so maybe after I'm done recouping!

Hey mate, I was up at 330 last year. I've been playing rugby for 4 years and I know I've been to fat to be any good. Over the Summer I finally decided to quit being fat, and since then I've dropped 60 lbs and I weigh 270 now. The best thing is just keeping a food journal. I'm not sure if I'm supposed to link websites on TL or not but bodybuilding.com has a really great weight loss forum with a lot of motivation and helpful tips.
Basically it comes down to knowing how many calories you use and eating less than that. Honestly, you'll be really glad to get some weight off. Even though I'm 270 I feel like a different person. I'm pretty big and muscular by nature, so I'll probably end up weighing around 230-220 if I still want to be playing rugby. I'd be glad to get in on this contest though.

Hey Sheth, I'll join in.

In February of this year I started out at 428 pounds. I'm currently 288 pounds, and still going.

Whenever you stream, I get out the iPad and I watch you play while I run on the treadmill/elliptical. I've managed to stay on there for hours because you provide such a fun stream. Thank you, you've helped me, and maybe some competition can help you. :D

You are the most cuddley looking teddybear ever, but if you want to lose weight then I support you all the way! I've lost a lot in the past and it can be really hard work, but if my lazy ass can do it then so can you!! Remember that eating properly is just as important as working out, so find a good balance of both, and never overdo either one. Don't forget to treat yourself every now and again too ^^

Good luck!! ♥

Manner Bear going to go into Bear Mode like InControl?

Aw yeah. I used to weigh 230lbs myself and managed to burn off 55 just by working outdoors in the heat. Then after I lost most of my excess fat I started lifting and once you get into the daily routine of working out, you feel great! Results are near instant and you feel yourself pushing your limits and going above them when you work out more.

Good luck Sheth! I'm sure you'll succeed!

Good luck with your challenge, judging by your SC skill you have a lot of dedication and willpower, compared to being one of the best in the world losing weight is nothing.

I'm constantly struggling with my weight, and should lose 30 pounds to be on the ideal BMI for my height, so in spirit off challenge I'l post my weight now and report as you do.

ATM I weigh 81 kg = 178.5
Don't have anything around to measure my stomach and chest, so I'l leave that out.
So, are you a pessimist? - On my better days. Are you a nihilist? - Not as much as I should be.

OK Shawn..I accept.. Here is my backstory. I am 5 feet 7 inches tall..and I am 27..so I am not getting any younger.. I used to weigh around 155-160 about an yr and half back.. Right now I weigh close to 185 pounds. I am going back to my native country (India) on Jan 13th. So I have almost a month to reduce some weight, I want to try and get to somewhere between 165-170 pounds. Most of my weight is around my tummy, as my bisceps are toned enough from my workouts. I will try to post some pics of me per week. Thanks Sheth you are always an inspiration man.. <3 much

gogo sheth!

i agree with others that you should take your time. the fact that you are making a goal at all is a big step and you shouldn't feel the need to drop 100 lbs. the first month. just make sure you eat right and do lots of cardio and you'll be shedding fat easy.

Good luck to you and congratulations on getting the will to try. As you have realized, that IS the important part. I myself am currently working to get in shape as well. I would participate in your challenge, but we are starting from vastly different places so I feel it would be an unfair comparison. Good luck to both you and all others who are doing the same!

Good luck Sheth! I'm actually already in diet/muscle management right now, and I'm not normally a "preaching person" or anything, but I have been following the Keto style diet (see here) and I think it's a fantastic way to lose weight.

I started in May just after my birthday, weighing in at about 122kg (which is about 268 pounds). Starting Keto, cutting out all the carbs I could, and doing a small amount of exercise per day, I was aiming to hit 100kg by Xmas this year.

I'm currently 106kg (233 pounds), so while I'm not sure if I'll hit the target time, it has certainly been successful for the most part!

If you have any questions there are a lot of other TL'ers who do Keto (see the "TL health and fitness thread" for more folks who can help) but if you have any questions feel free to ask :D

So will you post things like if you worked out and what you ate etc too? That would make things interesting and maybe motivate to try to run a bit longer for example than just posting numbers?
Please also be really careful with diets because nutrition is not something you should underestimate as its kind of complicated and a topic that has a LOT to give. So research there is gonna take a while but the worth it in the end. I think you still will train SC2 so you gotta have enough energy to do that :D Thinking about participating but for me % would work , but well, thats something you can add easily

So I have almost a month to reduce some weight, I want to try and get to somewhere between 165-170 pounds. Most of my weight is around my tummy, as my bisceps are toned enough from my workouts. I will try to post some pics of me per week. Thanks Sheth you are always an inspiration man.. <3 much

Awesome! Doing this sort of thing can only help to motivate ya I think! At least thats what its doing for me.

Honestly.. if you were to just be aware of what your eating and run a mile a day (try to get as close to 7 minutes as possible) i think you will be happy where you end up unless your trying to like become scuplted and have huge muscles. If you just want to be healthier and trim down I ask you this, how many overweight people do you see running a 7 minute mile? Its an obtainable goal that shouldn't be extremely hard to achieve if you work at it daily.

I think you need to keep up! I am 3 weeks into my change and im 15lbs down and hoping for another 10 by Christmas!

Something you could also look into http://www.fitocracy.com/home/

I can send out invites if you want. You put in your workout and you can "Level up" and you get quests like running a 5k (3.11mi) Could even make a TeamLiquid Group if enough people want to join!

PM for invites!

i agree with others that you should take your time. the fact that you are making a goal at all is a big step and you shouldn't feel the need to drop 100 lbs. the first month. just make sure you eat right and do lots of cardio and you'll be shedding fat easy.

Yep thats my plan! Gotta start some time though! Might as well do it with competition, as I'm somewhat of a competition junky

I'll join you in this sheth, I could stand to shed some pounds myself. I'm like 6'4" and maybe 290-300 pounds usually, not sure of my other measurements so I'm probably close to your body type, we'll see who can drop more :D

I forgot to mention, Don't always go by the medical BMI charts. Not everyone is built the same. I'm 6'1 so being 220 would technically be well overweight for someone my height, but it doesn't accommodate for muscle and fitness.

I don't know if the Christmas holiday is the best timing for this, considering my mother-in-law has a tradition for baking lots around the holiday and my wife enjoys the same...but I need to lose 100 pounds ideally, so why the hell not. I've wanted to lose weight for awhile and a competition can help make it easier to motivate oneself. I'll give it a go! I'm 265 lbs atm, so not that far off yours, lets give it a try. Any basic plans on how to lose the weight? (I'm going to steal any you share, just so you know. =P)

Sheth, I don't know if you have a plan on what you want to do already, but my 2 cents:

If you want to loose weight and gain muscle, I honestly can't recommend enough the Stronglifts 5x5 program. Whilst I was on it I lost 2.6% body fat and gained 3lb of muscle in 2 weeks (as an example, I've since been on it for the past year and it has totally changed my figure). Its very very good, and you only train 3 times a week, so great if you have a busy schedule.

I have never been overweight, but the fact I dropped what is to me, quite a lot of body fat makes me think someone with a little more to loose could shed a hell of a lot on it. There are plenty of examples on the site of it being a great way to loose fat.

The website "hub" for the routine used to be free but is now on a $10 / month subscription, if your not up for paying for access I can talk you through it, it isn't at all complicated (you only have to learn 6 lifts).

Might be worth considering, drop me a message if you want.

Cheers

Edit: Whatever you decide - good luck!

Best of luck with the project, some simple but sound advice I know would be:
If you want to lose weight do it in the kitchen, burning the amount of calories a mars bar or a drink of soda gives you by running is madness. The amount of work and time you will need to put into this if you do not diet correctly is insurmountable.
So:
Drink a lot of water to help your body get rid of the fat.
Make a plan and follow through with it. Try it for a month atleast and see how you feel then.

Best of luck Sheth!

Pretty much I have a plan. You have to make your own plan basically. You can check out things over at the Health and Fitness initiative here, or maybe even read a book on it. You want to find something that sounds doable for you and stick to it. !

Ive went from 190 pounds to 170 in 6 weeks, the hardest part was actually the beginning because it was such a rigorous regime that included both exercise and diet, and you wont see results at the beginning so you always feel it is not working, but when it starts to work and i lost my first 5 pounds a swear the other 15 fell off instantly with the motivation i got.

Good luck, Sheth! I'm totally on board.

Maybe we can be virtual gym/diet buddies to help keep each other in check! :D If you post what you plan to do as a workout and diet, I'll try my best to follow along!

Weight: 240 (I fluctuate between 230 and 240, depending on time of day, and what I've eaten that day but I figure I'll go for my heaviest)
Chest: 30 inch (I'm estimating because I don't have a tape measure and I'm using a ruler...)
Belly: 40 inch (again, estimating with a ruler so I might be off a little bit!)

Good luck! (I'm planning on trying to start maybe p90x - I hear a lot of good things about that from my friends who have done it and I like that it is in a nice digestible 30-day regimens).

Yeah, I'll take part in this.

A month ago I tore the ligmanets in my right ankle quite badly (and not for the first time) and it is only now that I'm able to start exercise again. I also realised a few days ago that I've but on a lot of weight in that month.

Weight : 242 lbs
Waist: 38"

Also, I have HUGE thighs. So my main goal is to make them look in proportion to my body.

gl Sheth.

Im the reverse - about 6' 1'' tall and relatively skinny ~ 150 lbs.

I started working out two months ago in hopes of gaining muscle and mass - mostly for myself, but a bit because of a new girlfriend. Its been going well so far - I am really into it! After struggling to get myself to work out for the first 4-5 times I have noticed that I now want/need to work out almost everyday.

I am also focusing on eater properly - more balanced diet, etc

I have gained a few lbs already and I am going to force all of the KiwiClones and KawaiiRice to start lifting weights soon.

Anyways, I hope you can get past the first hurdle because afterwards it seems more like a pleasureful activity rather than a chore!

Sheth,

I'll join you in this. I weighed around 270 pounds, 6 feet. In preparation for college, I decided I'd want to lose weight. I did really well, dropping to about 255. However, after college started, I couldn't keep it up anymore and I'm probably where I started before.

With Christmas break coming up, I'll have about 5 weeks to get something done. This time, I'll stick to it.

I'm currently about 185lb and really want to get down to about 165 (I'm a short dude, 185 is kinda chubby on me). I really admire you for posting this, and I wish you luck! My aunt lost like 120 pounds and has kept it off for seven years so far, so I know it can be done, and I'll be cheering for you all the way!

Track your daily calorie intake and you'd see just how little you eat. You might think you are eating a lot one day, but you are really not.

Motivation research shows that an intrinsic need, not an extrinsic need, is longer lasting and better for long term goals. Furthermore, adding extrinsic motivations often decreases intrinsic motivations.

This blog is basically to give you a sense that you have to live up to other's expectations right? So that you can't go back on your word? But that is an extrinsic motivation. Obviously you can't stop what you've already done here, but I would advise you sincerely to make an effort to find the motivation within yourself. "I want to exercise and eat healthy because I want to feel good" something like that. Long term goal is weight loss, but you need incremental short term goals of changing your lifestyle and the way you live.

You might not see this but I hope you do. I studied motivation this year and this is what a lot of studies show (which to me was obvious, but actually a lot of people are surprised just how ineffective extrinsic motivation can be).

Really good idea. I'm all for being healthy. I wrestle, so from the beginning of October to the beginning of November I went from 5'8" 152 pounds to 138 pounds. Not sure that's really significant though. Well, good luck!

Well, I've never had any weight issues but I'm with you on getting healthier. Have been going to the gym for the last three months trying to gain some weight (muscles) and get that heart pumping

I think approaching it like Starcraft has definitely helped me; setting goals and working towards them through excercise and physical management gave me a lot of satisfaction and a feeling of being in control. Hope it can give you the same kind of positive feedback atop of a healthier body!
I think esports is pretty nice.

I too am overweight being 190cm (about 6'3") and at 120kg (a bit over 260 pounds). I have been overweight all of my life and decided I want to see how it's like to be on the other side ^^.

About 2 months ago I started going to the gym about twice a week and lost 4kg (8 pounds) in that time - mostly working on gaining muscle at the moment (my back is pretty weak). I also decided to make time to visit the gym more regularly at least 3 times a week. My goal is to eventually get below 100kg.

Anyways, glhf!

that's very well put, and it definitely goes for everything you do - finding value within yourself and never looking for it outside of yourself is the key to a strong reality.

this is great advice and is important to be aware of. it's good to keep track of your progress and keep yourself accountable, as well as communicating with others whom have similar goals, but you have to make sure that first and foremost you are doing this for yourself.

i feel like a lot of people nowadays are more motivated by the actual blogging aspect of setting goals than actually achieving them. but on the flip side, it is always so awesome to see someone who is sharing their progress actually show some good results.

i think a lot of people believe that if they lose track of their blog, it was because they weren't keeping up with the goal, and vice versa. however, if you lose track of the blog, that doesn't mean you should stop working towards losing weight! and if you stop working towards losing weight, then you shouldn't think its because you stopped posting on the blog.

dailyburn.com is an amazing way to track calories, you just write what you ate and click how much of it you ate; you can also add in recipes you're making and items that aren't already on the website. I'm from Quebec so there are a lot of products I had to add in myself, but the majority of users on this site are American so pretty much all American products are there.

Also, as lame as it may seem, bodybuilding.com's nutrition section has VERY helpful stickies.

I was never overweight myself, but with those two resources I got very strong and healthy (I was just skinny-fat before). Sheth I'm really glad you're doing this, I support you 100%! Good luck

PS: Don't listen to whoever says "low weight, high reps" - always lift heavy, you shouldn't be able to do 30 consecutive reps of something, try and find an amount of weight with which you can barely finish a 10-12 rep set

You pretty much need a small scale in your kitchen to measure (roughly) what you are eating. Looking at all the labels and keeping track of everything will be very tedious at first, but it really isn't very hard at all once you get into it. There are a ton of websites for tracking your intake but i don't see how they are less bothersome than just keeping a food-diary of sorts.

For the 1 month challenge, does this begin today? I'll assume so.

I'll accept your challenge..! My stats are age 22, height 6'0, weight 194-196 lbs

I consider that to be about 25-30 lbs overweight, and ive struggled with it for years, gaming habits are not forgiving :-/

good luck Sheth, and to the rest of us.

Good luck Sheth. Good project. Sorry for being european (you should be sorry for the only ones using the non-metric stuff )

177cm tall
1.5 years ago I was 96kg
Now I am 84.5kg
Next year in December I want to be 80kg and stay with that until I'm 80 years or so

It's quite easy to do. What I did: Ate more healthy (no sugar stuff, more vegetables, more soup, espresso instead of cappuchino, ....), did some sports (2 hours jogging/week, some tennis). When I'm hungry, I go and get a carrot from the fridge. It's important to think long-term, not short-term.

Really happy that you've decided to do this. Even though it may not be the same, after my freshman year of college I gained about 30 pounds by the end of the year. It took me a little over two months to loose. Although from what I remember from my research it is almost physically impossible to lose weight and gain muscle because the two processes are opposite of each other and cannot be achieved at the same time.

Fortunately, I have to more weight to lose, so I'll just wish you luck and hope to see some great results by your next LAN!

you can cut carbs out completely but you will likely become stupid since i think carbs deplete brain function or something but there is a light at the end of the tunnel. since you will be losing weight via carbless diets you will become stupid enought to play protoss! in fact the less intelligent you are the better you will be!!!!

on a serious note if you have the willpower to see a massive change through such as 100 pounds or something thats just an impressive thing. your gonna need a good support group/family/friends helping you out

bro i lost over 100 pounds so i know how it feels to get that initial motivation. just know it's not impossible even if it seems like you're getting no results at times. it's all about staying hydrated, easy exercise, and just rationing your diet a little less than you are now and you'll find it easier than you think to do.

Sheth, I wish you the best of luck. I hope you're doing this for nobody but yourself-- Don't go changing just to please me You never let me down before. Don't imagine you're too familiar, and I don't watch you anymore. I wouldn't leave you in times of trouble, we never could have come this far. I took the good times, I'll take the bad times; I'll take you just the way you are.

I need to know that you will always be the same old someone that I knew. What will it take till you believe in me the way that I believe in you? I said I love you, and that's forever, and this I promise from the heart: I could not love you any better; I love you just the way you are.

I have wrestled for 6 years, done climbing and rugby, and my weight has gone up and down. The best steps is to look at your food, and look at whats in it. Learn about food, eating healthy is half the battle, maybe even 75% of the battle. Then it's just getting your ass on a treadmill, and don't get discouraged man. I went on a sort of month binder of bad food, booze, and smoking, and my first workout back made me want to give up right then and their. You will start out slow on length of workouts and what not, but it picks up quick. I wish the best of luck to you, and maybe being healthier will put you in a better state of mind and you will play better! Oh and talk to tyler, I think he knows a thing or 2 about working out......

Pretty cool bro.. and quite brave to post this, I know many who would feel insecure about it. I am not sure how healthy your eating or exercise habits are now but I can tell you that if you improve those you will not only improve your physical health but mental health, and by extension start crushing more newbs in SC2.

This is a really admirable effort. Weight gain and loss can be personal so It can't be easy sharing this sort of thing with all of team liquid. I wish you the best of luck.

And I'd like to pipe up with my advice. I'd assume you burn about as many calories as the average gamer, so any excess weight you may have over the average gamer is likely due to your diet (ignoring any unique/personal characteristics). Exercise is good and all, but for measurements, you'll probably get the best results from taking a look at your diet. I don't know what you eat on a daily basis or how much, but that's probably where you need to start. I lost a considerable amount of weight over a few months by just cutting out all junk food, processed food, and desserts out of my diet. I avoided anything high in sodium and high in fat. Usually if your intake isn't abnormal you should burn enough calories in a day with regular activity to maintain a decent weight. Exercise definitely helps in many ways and is very important but I have found from my experience that it is secondary to diet. You can't get ripped off of just a good diet, but exercise is significantly less useful if you eat garbage all day.

To be clear I am certainly no expert on the matter, these are just impressions I got from my own experiences with losing weight.

Yeah I did this stuff for a month and a half before I stopped... Its fucking crazy. The first week isn't bad but then you just get really tired and worn out for the rest of the month. Granted I know I wasn't eating right and all so it was my fault totally. But if you want a really really good workout I'd recommend it. Note: seriously not for the weak of heart, but does yield quick results.

If not, I'm sure you'll find something else Sheth. Good luck!!!

I'm at 111kg weight 234lb
42in waist
34 chest

I feel like 30 days is a good start but 90 days with 30 day checkins would be a more noble goal.

My proposition: How about this every 30 days if I lose more weigh you give me an hour sc2 lesson and if you beat me that month I send you $50 bones. We'd take pictures of us on the scale.

Deal?

Hey Sheth, just thought I'd throw this out there for you. I saw a thread about this site on TL a while back. Not sure what your schedule is, but especially if you don't have one yet, this could help out. Good luck!

I definetly plan on it being more towards 90 days for sure. And if you'd like I'm fine with this. =) Feel free to pm me on TL your picture =)!

Good Luck Sheth!! :D Maybe you should have something like everytime you lose 2... 3 .. (or something) in a row, you will have to work out for a longer amount of time the next time you go to the gym. After this first month, to keep it going to know! :D

Good luck man. Props to you for trying to lose weight! It'll be hard, but keep at it and don't give up. Get some inspiration from Ret because he used to be rather large in the past, but now is in pretty good shape.

Good luck bro. I'm sure Ret has some good ideas for you. Maybe get oGs to help out too. I say focus on what you drink first. Just drink water, juices, and gatorade-like drinks. (Pocari Sweat?) If you're feeling the pressure just start your workouts at 2 minutes. You'll probably find that your confidence will shoot right up after the 2 minutes, that you will want to keep going for a while. If not, you just do the 2 minutes and raise it up later.

Can't wait to see the new you!

Good Luck too all who are participating in this great challenge of self improvement, I shall not be joining ye as me current weight or exercise regime is ok,

I would advise if you hit a gym to give a rowing machine a good go, is tough on your body but will lose you lots of excess weight and will help add some muscle

Hey Sheth,

I've been overweight my entire life and I went out and bought an exercise bike so that I could watch Starcraft 2 streams on my TV while exercising (helps get rid of the boredom) and I just wanted to say you have finally given me the kick in the butt I needed to REALLY get going on becoming healthy. I'm at 216 pounds and believe me I'll be busting my butt right alongside with you man =)

Good luck!

Hey man! Good idea! Really hope it works out for you.
If you use your SC2 motivation you will do great!
But one question, how tall are you? You seem rather tall.

Anyway,
92 kg (202 lbs)
183 cm (6 ft) tall
(I used to be 245 lbs)

You can do it Sheth! Its always good to be healthy yo! I support u, I'm planning on doing some dieting soon, im waiting till after Christmas though because i know that there will be lots of food up until that point. In the mean time i will be checking in man i hope everything goes well for ya, Once u get started the first 2weeks are the hardest, once u get into that routine of eating differently and working out or what ever u plan on doing. That's when it just becomes routine and its not so bad at all and then u start seeing results and before ya know u keep the ball rolling!

Good luck Sheth! This will have a huge impact on your life. It certainly did for me when I did.

In grade 10 I was over 60 pounds overweight (I was at 235 at a height of around 5'8", so pretty bad), and managed to lose 60 (Down to 175, which is within acceptable BMI for my size for normal weight). It was the best I've ever felt and I managed to maintain it for more than 2 years. Unfortunately I gained a bunch back last year due to university (my first year) and stress and went up to 220. Since September I've lost 27 pounds (currently at 193 as of day before yesterday). I did not manage to keep my work out schedule in November because of uni (stupid essays!) so my progress has been hampered but now thanks to finals I can start again so I will take part and hopefully get down to 185 or 180 in the next month, while building muscle.

I definitely recommend tracking your caloric intake with a program or website (I use Livestrong, it's free and easy to use). I did that starting in September and it was surprising how it makes you think about food. I definitely watch what I eat more now because of it. Also, drinking water helps a ton. I drink about 12 cups per day now.

I'll edit in my stomach and chest measurements later on. I'm doing core-based exercises specifically to get rid of my belly.

Weight: 193
Height: 5'11"
Waist: 35"

Remember that it is very important to make lifestyle changes that are sustainable. Just like in video games, the obvious cause of the problem is not where you should look to begin making changes (ie. building thors counter mutas). A more ascetic lifestyle is what you are really going for, not just weight loss.

Well all the best man. I too wanted to lose weight, but realized Christmas is around the corner, and my family goes all out with the food... so maybe next year.

However, this has helped BuffCraft although the thread has sadly been closed/

Hey Sheth
I'm not much of a poster here on TL but I am a huge fan and I hope I can help you out. I play football at Cal and have benefited tremendously from our strength & conditioning and nutrition programs and I want to share some of the wisdom I have learned from our staff with you. These will take the form of some basic tips with an explanation underneath in case the saying isn't clear.

When you are planning a meal, make sure to only include one starch
-For example, a traditional meal might have pasta, salad, bread rolls, and meatballs. This is a tasty meal, but including the bread rolls with it does not fulfill any additional nutritional needs while still adding calories and fat if you butter your roll.

Fill up on greens instead of grains
-Typically, it is considered important to have vegetables with your meals (salad in the previous example). However, this should be taken a step further when trying to lose weight and the vegetable should be what you reach to for seconds. This is important because dieting can really suck and be difficult to maintain if you have to feel hungry all the time. Have some of the Calorie dense food, but make sure to fill up on the calorie light and vitamin heavy vegetables.

Low impact exercise can make a huge impact
-Ok that's kinda corny I'll admit it... It is still true though. For bigger guys, attempting to run too much, play sports like tennis, or do other exercises that people might recommend can cause a lot of pain in your back and knees. In order to avoid this, stick to exercises like the elliptical machine at the gym and walking or swimming until you feel comfortable with the stress that more traditional exercise puts on your body.

We all strive for perfection but it is never quite within our grasp
-This is perhaps the most important piece of advice I can give you. Remember that you're human, and that sometimes you're not going to do the best thing for your diet or your exercise regimen. The important thing to remember though is that as long as you do the right thing most of the time, you're going to be seeing results and feeling better before you know it .

Best wishes <3

Hey Sheth! Big fan. I've been watching you since you had like 100 viewers and still lived at home! Anyways, I'm in a similar situation here but I started two months ago, so here's what I've learned in the past two months.

First, go to this website: http://www.freedieting.com/tools/calorie_calculator.htm

Your maintenance is how much you need to maintain your current weight, ie you eat as much as you use. The other two numbers are going to be your goals. I assume you want to go with the 'extreme' fat loss diet, and it's totally your choice.

THE MOST IMPORTANT PART is diet. Exercise is good, but it actually does surprisingly little. A diet is a diet, and its the MAIN component of what you're trying to do. There is NO MAGIC in any of the diets you've heard of on TV etc. It's simply a matter of consuming less calories. A lot of the bullshit you read about is bullshit. You're going to have to think of it like this: I'm eating the diet of the person I want to be. I am consuming the number of calories of the person I want to be. And that's all you have to think about. A person weighing 160lbs only has to eat like 1800 calories a day to be 160lbs. And you want to be 160 lbs, so eat like that person. So, start calorie counting like a motherfucker. Write it all down in a journal. But it is seriously 95% about your caloric intake. Pretty simple, IMO. Then, add in exercise.

As for what you'll be eating, you want to eat mainly protein and vegetables, with a small amount of carbs. Protein fills you up for a longer time because it takes longer to break down in your body. Vegetables are a good filler as well, but have very little calories. They also have fiber which is good for bowel movements (lulz) and keeping you feeling full. The same should apply to your carb intake. Whole grains, bitch. Eat 'em. So, consider eating something like chili. That shit is chock full of protein and vegetables. My problem is that I love food and can't just eat a skinless chicken breast or eggs or whatever. Shit needs to be flavorful. So be ready to coat your chicken breast in shitloads of seasoning, and throw garlic all over your food. Know how to cook? No? Start learning! It's fun, creative, and useful. You'll have to brainstorm more dishes (I'm working on it too), and they're not easy to think of, but they exist.

As for working out - be ready to be sore, for about a week. Like, achingly sore. And then you'll work out more and it will stop aching and stop being sore. After about 2-3 weeks, you actually get used to working out, and your body adjusts to it, and you'll never really have to worry too much about being sore again! Cool, right?

1) Before each workout, EAT something. Not a lot, but something to give you energy so that you MAXIMIZE your time spent working out. So, think about having a few crackers and maybe a small handful of nuts. Give yourself 10-15 minutes to let your body start metabolizing and gogogo. 2) DRINK TONS OF WATER. Being dehydrated sucks and you don't even know you're dehydrated, you just kinda feel like shit and wonder why. Drink 24/7. 3) Take a multivitamin. Why? Fuck if I know, but do it anyways. Shit's good for you, man.

If I think of more stuff, I'll let you know. But good luck. (The best feeling, by the way, is seeing a part of your body you thought looked like shit, and then being like "not bad" once you start losing weight. And the change is gradual but you can see it. You can fucking see it, even if it's small. It feels amazing. My forearms - I hate them. But I'm seeing definition in them. They're gaining mass and a real shape. My hands look... manlier. Just wait man. I believe in you Sheth!)

I lost a bit of weight a few years ago... went from 112Kg(247Lb) and 186cm(6'2'") down to 88Kg(194Lb).

Last few months I've been inactive though, and am currently back up to 95Kg(210Lb). Want to try and get down to 85Kg.

Good luck Sheth! I have become a fan recently thanks to your wonderful stream moderator TheSnod who is a friend of mine... unlike him though, I have a full time job, so can't often stay up and watch you stream at 3am here in Aus. An amazing player, and all starcraft players should aspire to be more like you with manner. <3

Hey Shawn!

With all the traveling you are doing it is already easy to get sick; so getting more in shape and all around healthy is definitely going to cut that down and you'll feel a ton better.

I've gotten out of shape as well bud. So I plan to get a gym membership and will take on this challenge.

5'10 - 225lbs.

You have a whole community here to help through it. You can also talk with half the EG house as well, they seem to be either playing sc2 or at the gym. :D

i know alot about personal training and whatnot...

this is a great thing to do IF you do it safely! don't go on some stupid crash diet because you're body still needs nourishment so you can have energy to work out and build muscle...rather than eating less you should eat healthy...no fast food, food with a lot of fat etc.... eating small meals every 2 hours is best and make sure you're getting alot of protein...drink protein shakes at least 30 mins after working out.

you probably have done your research and know most of the stuff i'm telling you but just in case you didn't i wanted to give my input

best of luck to ya!!

I dropped from 285lbs to 185lbs over about two years with zero dietary restrictions and on-and-off in the gym, on the principle of that's easier to control shopping than eating, so don't buy what's not ideal to eat. Once you get used to whatever physical activity you fancy (besides fork or spoon lifting), it's a breeze. I'm a gym guy and there's no better feeling (well, besides women and ESPORTS) than to run comfortably on the treadmill.

I went from 290 to 260-265 (varies day to day) in the past 4 months without doing anything special besides not eating terribly. It's not that hard to be honest. I still cheat once in a while and eat crap (ice cream, cookies that aren't crackers, chips, etc once in a while, although I only buy my groceries every 2 weeks and I don't buy too much junk food otherwise I wouldn't eat anything else).

I replace my dinner with a salad without dressing 2-3 times a week. I stopped eating at the restaurant (only once in the past 4 months, I was craving a pizza) which also saves me a ton of money that I couldn't really afford to waste anyway. I'm trying to save money as well so I'm buying cheap food most of the time; I eat pasta, rice or noodle soup on a daily basis pretty much which is not really great in terms of taste (and high salt content) but still better than junk food. I buy a bloc of cheese that I cut into small parts and add some to whatever tasteless thing I'm eating usually. 1 bloc costs around 8$ (or 4$ if I'm lucky enough to get them on sale) and lasts me 2 weeks easily so it's not too bad. Also put some random meat pieces in. (chicken or ham; I buy a huge ham every 45-60 days when it's on special for like 15$ and that lasts me for 2 months -- cheapest way I found to add meat to be honest. My parents gave me some chicken but it's too expensive for me normally). Lastly, I eat eggs and toast a lot too.

So yeah, diet is not very varied but for about 60-70$ per grocery (or 120-150$/month) I can eat well and relatively varied (and I still eat too much so I could bring that down to like 100$ a month if I ate a little less and cut junk food from that).

Exercise is secondary. I do some sporadically (I do it for like 2-3 weeks then I get busy and I get lazy and/or forget about it for a few weeks, then start again... not really useful that way) and it hasn't changed much in how I'm losing weight. You do feel better after doing some exercise for 30-60 minutes each day though.

All in all, when you start at a massive weight, it doesn't take much to lose it (I assume until I reach around 210 or so it will stay relatively easy). Just don't eat too much junk and be patient, simple as that. I stayed around 270 for like 45 days, then I started losing weight again without changing anything. Sometimes it's just weird like that.

Finally, don't try to over do it. It sounds like a fun contest but you're not supposed to lose too much weight too quickly, it brings about health problems. You're supposed to lose like 10-15% of your weight max per year so that your body can keep up. Still, starting at 300 pounds it's not too bad if you lose weight more quickly. I mean, it's hard to lose weight slowly if you're trying to lose weight starting from 300 lbs. Just don't try to lose 20-30 pounds a month.

Hello Sheth,
[image loading]

I’m going to be honest Sheth, I’ve been struggling with overeating and binge eating for about 3 years. I know from personal experience that you don’t get as big as me or yourself without some serious issues in your past, feeling horrible about your body, depression, and crying. My weight capped out at 284 lbs. and I got a warning from my doctor that I was borderline diabetic and had fatty liver issues that could kill me as soon as my 30’s. Recently I started using Starcraft as a metaphor for my life and have applied WhiteRa’s words “more gg, more skill” to everything from work to weight loss. Since then I have lost about 15 pounds and counting. But I want to accelerate my weight loss so I’m going to accept your challenge!

As someone who plays Starcraft a lot I know that being fat hurts gameplay; low energy, back pain, and poor circulation compound the challenges of winning a match, particularly long macro games. Perhaps the worst part about being an obese gamer is losing. I have lost games and been so down on myself that I think “you lost that game and you’re fat, you’ll never be good at anything.” It’s a horrible feeling and I would be willing to bet that you know that feeling too. Let’s never have that feeling again!

C’mon Sheth, let’s do this for The Swarm! We’ll become better gamers and healthier people. We’re going to eat right and have as much energy as a Marine with Stim and run as fast as Speedlings! We can do this. Sheth and ZergSamurai fighting!
More GG, more skill

I just started an exercise program ~2 weeks ago, finally deciding that i needed to do something about my weight. I'm around 142kg's @ 6'3'' so i have a long way to go, but exercising 5 times a week and cutting out junk food has me feeling alot better. with you all the way sheth.
I dont have a specific weight goal, i just want to get my body back to a healthy form

If anyone can do it, You can Sheth. I know I've been working on keeping my weight to were I feel comfortable and its been based on my diet. Just by eating better I have gotten myself back down to around 200 lbs, Which is just fine for a 6' 4" guy with a good frame. I look good and feel good. I know I was doing well when my friends where like damn have you been loosing weight?

In summary, I know you can do it sheth. I know that when you feel more comfortable with your weight good things happen :D

I would compete but I'm skinny as I am now. Muscles on the other hand could need a working. I fail @ muscles T.T (Like... I would easily lose to 7th graders in an arm wrestling contest)

Good luck.

getting into the routine is the hardest part, once you start don't stop though. every time you break for a day the more likely it is you will stop your new habits.

I don't have alot of weight to loose but I promise ill drop those 10extra pound university has added to me this semester. I'm an amateur mixed martial arts fighter so if you want any input about diet and exercise let me know. Honestly the biggest thing though is motivation and im glad you found some. Let those old pictures motivate you to what you want to accomplish. Losing weight does alot to help your health and confidence in general. Its a constant journey but i'm sure losing the weight will actually help you become an even better player. Goodluck Sheth!

I'm kind of 'skinny fat' right now. If Sheth is gonna tackle this, I can tackle my admittedly smaller task. I won't be losing much weight, but I will be converting it to muscle. Right now I'm 6'1 180 and look like bleh in the mirror. By the end of the month I will be 175 and look better in the mirror. Ultimate goal is 170 and looking and being fit. Thanks for the motivation Sheth! Gonna go for a jog right now (even though it's ridiculously cold out, boo.)

The plus side is you can have really tasty stuff in your diet and still lose weight/get fit. Baked Chicken is awesome. Fish is awesome. Coconut Water is amazing while you work out to keep you hydrated and energetic. Seriously check that stuff out. Veggie/Fruit smoothies rule after working out. Refreshing and damn good. I don't have a blender so I get mine from Jamba Juice, but making your own is far cheaper. I'm actually looking forward to getting the crap out of my diet that I've lazily let slip in there. Only problem is that I work at a pizza place, so free pizza is kind of part of my pay, but I can just eat less of it and make it healthier.

Sheth fighting!

I don't know my measuements wish I could find out. Though I think they are similar to yours.

I do remember last time I weighed myself I was around 330 or something like that. I've been dieting for a few months. My goal is to be 100 lbs less by spring. I've lost 30 in the last couple of months just by chaging one meal.

I've started even doing some sc2 related excerices. including the fusion core dance (great arm excerise if you do it in longer streches of time) and the kong dance as well.

One thing I'm going to do more often is to steps. Since I am in Canada and the winter here is hella cold. I'm going to go up and down stairs everyday for as long as possible until I am worn out.

I'm for sure going to join you on this. I've been wanting to lose weight for a long time. I am moving soon and want to look decent for when I move. So I am hoping maybe I can lose 20 lbs in the next month. I think I could do it. Since losing weight is easier at higher weights. I think maybe I can pull it off.

EDIT:

ok I checked my measurments.

Sotmach is 53
Chest is 49

So quite similar to yours.

I hope not too many other ppl believe that because its plain and utterly wrong ^^
There is no substitution for dedication, and the more dramatic the condition is the slower you may have to start - although of course something like that (the surgery) will get results of some kind too.

Hey Sheth !

i totally support you and i beleive in you doing well.

im on it myself for a long time now! im at 264 pounds at the moment.

if you take advice from me, then i have only 1 thing to say: make healthy choices, little by little. you dont have to run like 10 miles or you dont have to just eat plankton for a month or whatever. just day by day, step by step.

the first days / weeks are hard, really hard to change things like food habits etc. but i beleive in you !!! gogogo SHETH FIGHTING!!!

If you really want to lose weight you should not aim for "losing as much as possible in one month"

If you wanna be pro you won't practice what gets you the most wins right NOW, you want to do what eventually gives you the biggest chance of succes.

Just change habits that make fat, drink water! Eat less. Exercise more.

There you go, that is all you need to do, this way you may only lose 5 pounds a month but you can still lose 3-5 pounds per month in a year!

Hi Sheth, my problem is slightly different than yours as I need to gain weight but I focus right now on getting healthy first. Exercising since early November. Since then, I'm obviously not a muscle mountain but still it's a very good feeling to see my body change little by little. Of course the beginning is the harder part but now I feel I need and want to workout and am very proud of it.
I don't like gyms so I do everything by myself.
Tracking everything helps a lot. What a great feeling to see those graphs going up (or down if you want to lose weight).

I'm looking forward to your improvements.

The start is the hard part. I used to play in a football (soccer) team for a long time so I was always quite fit, but after quiting that I kinda got in a bad shape. One day (3 years ago) I was full of it and started to go to the gym. The first weeks were hard, I won't lie about that. I had four friends that started at the same time and so we went there together 3 times a week. Maybe try to find someone to do sports together with. It really helps!

Hope you can do it!

Thanks again for all of the nice comments. It seems that there will be quite a few people doing this with me and I'm really excited for that.
Quick status update for me, I went to the gym yesterday and just got a start up workout. Going again today to meet with a personal trainer and just do another small workout. Also heres what I've eaten so far.

2 Moe's Salads
1 Bowl of chicken soup (I'm sick so this doens't count!)
1 eggplant parmesian

And today I've had 3/4 of a Cobb salad from Wendies and half of a small chili. Oh and 2 meetballs!

Time to go off to the gym now and see what I can do. I still feel really sick and have no voice (So I can't really stream today). However I'm really excited about this and trying to respond to all of these pm's and what not. Its a lot to work out.

I need to maybe start a special thread for all of the people who accepted the challenge with me. Or just maybe write the ones who did in this thread down on a notebook.

Pretty physced to get this started. Also I might do another blog like this one after week one just to resay everything I've done and see how everyone else who is doing this with me has done. DONT FORGET to write down how you're doing as well.

Ok off to the gym, cya 2morro !

1 Bowl of chicken soup (I'm sick so this doens't count!)
1 eggplant parmesian

And today I've had 3/4 of a Cobb salad from Wendies and half of a small chili.

Ok off to the gym, cya 2morro !

keep working hard!

Sheth... You know that working when you are not 100% will only hamper your progress. I think take rest for a couple of days. even if its a minor cold, you dont know how your body might react to the work out. IMO take rest, and when you feel better, you can start working out . I will tweet you the same if you miss this , love you like always

Stay motivated A little tip, scientists conducted a study with two sets of dieters. They both went on the exact same diet, eating the same foods, exercising the same, etc. One set drank a large glass of water before their meals, and one did not. They were eating the same meals. The set drinking the water beforehand lost more weight than the others.

You need some numbers on your intake and expenditure to calculate what you need to eat, and most of all, not to eat.

Fact #1, you won't see big numbers after a few weeks. Most of what you lose the first weeks is sugar bound to water, and that weighs a lot more than pure fat compared with the calories it stores.

Fact #2, cheat meals are great when it comes to sticking to a diet. Only a meal, not more than that.

GLHF tho, you seem very motivated - keep it up! -30 pounds here, aiming for the last few for ottermode.

Supposedly a fit and healthy body leaves your mind sharper, which can only be good!

I'd love to show my support in the proper fashion by joining in, but I'm underweight at 195 cm weighing 70kg (or about 6 foot 5'' and 155 for you americans). Maybe a reverse challenge where I try to pick up some of your lost pounds ?

With you all the way on this Sheth, I played considerably better (years ago in Counter-Strike) when I kept myself healthy and have kept that way since! I don't measure myself as I don't focus on it to much myself, personally preference but good luck, stay strong and think of all the support you are getting here!

Go to it! I love your motivation to become healthier, it's inspiring. I don't think you mentioned how you were planning on losing weight, but I agree with Camer51 - don't go too hard too fast.

So you know you have people behind you, know that while you are doing this I'm going to try and start running on my elliptical again (been out of any sort of exercise for awhile.) I'm going to start at a minimum twice a week and see if I can bump it up to more than that before the month is out.

We're with you Sheth!

Hey man! Just a heads up, but being sick when working out can cause you to fatigue very quickly. (I've been working out at a gym for ~5 years so this is from experience), so keep that in mind! Pretty inspired to see you trying this out man, gl hf!

Great challenge, good luck !

Don't always use the gym for your exercise though, get outdoors and enjoy the scenery !

It is interesting to note that people who use gyms go because they want to get fitter, healthier, get more muscle etc, but people who exerice outdoors (running, swimming, surfing, bicycling, rock climbing etc) do so because they enjoy it. No points for guessing which it's easier to stay motivated for !

Maybe you should have an aim at the end, say to run a marathon ! That's got to be on everyones things to do before they die list, may aswell get it done now ^_^ haha well gl.

Sheth let me start by saying I'm a huge fan! I personally have been battling/warring against my weight for 6 years now. I've read much about the subject, and tried so many different things. It has been incredibly frustrating finding something that actually works for me. That being said this year has gone very well for me. I have dropped about 50 pounds and I'm looking good =p. This might sound lame but this will be the first year going into the new year where losing weight wont be a new years resolution and it brings a smile to my face every time I think about it! The following are rules I follow when deciding what to eat.

Carbohydrates = Sugar. Carbohydrates are your worst enemy. I have almost cut them completely from my diet. Not completely because you do need some for energy and brain power. My rules for carbs are simple. If its green it makes you lean. I don't eat bread, pasta, things with breading, starchy vegetables like potatoes, and I stay away from sugar. Its way to easy to over eat carbs. Eating pasta and bread is basically the same as eating icecream its all sugar. My diet now only has carbs in the form of oatmeal every morning for energy. And fresh vegetable steamers *remember no potatoes or follow the rule green makes you lean!*

Protein should be the main focus of your diet. Protein fills you up and helps fight cravings but on top of that your body actually has a hard time digesting it. This means that you actually burn like 25% of the calories in protein before your body can turn it into anything usable. This is great for weight loss purposes because if you over eat its not as world ending.

Fat really isn't that bad for you. lol I might get flamed for that comment but what you are trying to do is train your body to burn fat instead of using carbs for energy. Remember carbs are bad. It might sound strange but eating a 16oz ribeye steak is actually better for weight loss than eating a small bowl of macaroni. Don't rule foods out if they have some fat in them. A little fat is no problem.

In the end its calorie in/ calorie out. To lose weight you have to burn more than you take in period. It takes both diet and exercise and unfortunately I've found its much more about diet than exercise. If you work out but still eat a lot you wont lose weight. When I first started I also thought if I worked out really hard one day it sort of carried over to the next day so I could eat more. This isn't true at all lol. You have to do it everyday. Its a lifestyle change more than a diet and weight loss routine.

This last part is very sad Sheth and I almost don't want to say it. Your fat cells actually sort of remember what weight you used to be. This means that as you lose weight your body is actually being told that it needs to put on weight. So your portions actually have to get smaller and smaller to keep losing weight. And if you quit on your diet even if its only for a week or so, it can mean bad things for putting on weight. This is a lifestyle change! Its so unfair for people with metabolism s like us. And it sucks watching thin people eat things you wont ever be allowed to eat again. But life isn't fair I guess.

PS
This is my very first post on teamliquid lol. After reading it for years it was this topic that actually got me motivated to finally post something. I wish you the best of luck! Sorry for the TLDR post

I have no evidence other than persona experience to back this up, and I'm not in your situation, but I find chewing gum and drinking water really cuts down on the mindless munching I feel compelled to do while sitting in front of a computer all day.

I'm in! I've been 'trying' to lose weight for a little while now but lack motivation. Always start of great but after a few days/weeks I stop bothering ;< so this might just be what I need.
Now I just need to get over my fear of stepping on the scale..!

I went from 245 lb at the start of 2011 to 188 (6'2"). You can do it, stick to a plan and stay motivated. Sometimes it's hard to realize how much weight you are losing because of the gradual nature of weight loss so keep a photojournal of your progress and when you look back to how you were months ago, you'll feel a lot better.

Yep good times!

Just got back from the gym. Worked on lower back and what not. Thats gotta be good especially considering how much I sit down! And still working on eating really healthy. I've eaten some chicken from a salad at wendy's and some home made chili.

I'm really excited about this diet and going to start checking out fitocracy and other things today. Not to mention more streaming! Good times

If you need an invite let me know... I used my fitocracy account once and gave up because I thought it was too tedious to find which exercises I did. Easier to just keep mental note or write it in an excel file for me.

Well, eating is more of a habit. Healthy food can taste just as good as junk. In my case, I still like sweets/ice cream/chips but I don't crave them or anything. I just don't buy anything that I would regret eating, seems to work well enough for me.

Christmas might be a little tough though T_T. Damn you delicious food. Family always makes a ton of sweets and cakes, so I'm going to regain like 10 pounds in a couple of days.

+1. Sheth, this is a great idea. Being at 315 cannot be good for your heart. I wish you the best of luck. Take the steady approach with this since losing too much weight too fast is also bad for your body.

I will update a bit myself I guess so far.

I've done a small amount of excerise. But cut down on my calorie intake by a lot. Beofre I was having close to 1100, not I'm down below 500. Eating very little, and if I do, having an apple with some garlic. On the rare occasion I'll have lean chicken with curry, or Lean turkey.

I'm down to just below 50' on my stomach and 46.5 on my chest.

I'm not to happy with those results. I think I'll need to ramp up the garlic and not eat so much.

I did have some chicken tonight as well. Feel really guilty about it. I was straving and wanted to eat. After having 2 apples a day for the last 4-5 days without anything else. You tend to want to eat. I only have a little bit, thank god. But still feel guilty I had any. Need to make up for it tomorrow.

what?

healthy food is 100x times tastier when it's done right!

I had allready saw that you needed to change that about you, your weight was to much and was a danger to your health

Good luck Sheth, i'm a bit overweight too, so i'm gonna try and keep up with you.

Don't cut your calories too low! 1100 is pretty damn low already. Eat protein with every meal.

Edit: eating 500cal under your BMR (basal metabolic rate, or how many calories you need every day) means you will lose about 1lb/wk. If your body can handle more then it's ok to eat less. Think of it this way though, if you ultimately want to lose say 100lbs for ideal bodyweight, that's about two years. It may seem like a long time, but that's it, you're there for however many years. Where as if you push too hard, trying to get there in a couple of months and burn out after a few weeks, you'll never get there at all.

Training, diet, ect, isn't a day, a month, or a year-- it's a process.

hey sheth, hope you're still sticking to this! something i wanna suggest to you is to stop eating from fast food places, no matter how healthy it supposedly is. it is made cheaply and is not healthy at all!

you need real food, man! try and start making your own chicken salads! put some nuts or cranberries or pineapple slices or whatever in there. the point is, you need to have ACTUAL food! a fast food salad is still made from dirt cheap ingredients that are more focused on tasting good and making your full.

keep it up man! you got this!

Good luck. It's tough to change yourself and losing weight isn't just eating different things. A diet isn't a fashionable craze either. You have to change how you approach eating; both the food and the reasons why you eat with them. Results will follow.

I wish you the best of luck. The first 50 will be both the easiest to lose and the hardest to adapt to. Once you reach your first benchmark however each step further will be one step easier. Merry Christmas

TL is behind you.

Don't know why I haven't posted here yet... Two months ago I weighed in at 350.1 pounds. This was just after IPL3. Starting the week of Blizzcon, I just decided to go for it. Since then, about 2.5 months later, i'm now 315 pounds! I have a long way to go, but I will certainly jump in and join you here. :D GL HF Shawn!

GL Sheth!
I used to be an athlete then I went to college and I now weigh 215-220 pounds although I carry it well being a tall guy at 6' 4". When I get back to school I am going to start working out and see if I can get back in the shape I once was.

ironically enough I have a big conference on the 7th as well. So I need to be at my best for it. I'm pumped to go and I want to look better. I'm at 49.5 stomach atm. Just after xmas so I assume a lot of it is post-xmas weight. I'm doing an 8 hour workout today so I should be in better shape after that(shoveling snow for 8 hours). plus I'm on a stricter diet then I was before. I'm eating almost nothing :D . Its hard, but I'm loving it. Also I'm having a ton of garlic, raw Garlic. It kills my sotmach and give me huge stomach pains. But its worth it.

Hoping I can show good results before the end of the Challenge.

I have to say that generally really low calories and working hard doesn't seem to work so well. Either eat more and work out more or eat less and don't work out light. And if you eat, then make sure what you eat is protein, otherwise you'll lose most of your muscle mass. If you want to continue doing something drastic, may I suggest you read this book, so you will do what you are doing but correctly. I guarantee you it will be easier to adhere to and will lead to better results. It's also only around 100 pages.

Still quite sick at the moment. I've missed my last 2 gym sessions due to just coughing and that sort of thing. Going to the doctors again soon.

Haven't had the greatest of time focusing on losing weight while being out of it for a bit on some strong meds and then just not getting any sleep. However I'm still trying to do the challenge and I won't back down from any of the promises made to others who are doing it as well. And obviously I'm still trying my best to lose weight, its just not been a very good best of late. I've been sick sense NASL and its fluctuated up/down sense. Hopefully it'll get fixed soon.

Also thanks Kevin, this should be awesome. Thanks for keeping this bumped. I need to write a lot more updates.

Well, being sick is pretty good way to lose weight without exercise :D The other way is stress in general.

While you do loose weight while you are sick, it is mostly water from having fever, so it is not real weight loss.

My best experience loosing weight, is the diet, exercising will keep you healthy, and give you energy, but the diet is the thing that really help loosing weight.

ok.

So snce the date is closing in I want to do one more self-update before the date comes and final tallies are done.

I'm down to 47.75 on my sotmach. I've been following my orignal plan more of less with a tiny bit of spoiling myself here and there, no junk food or anything high in sugar. But stuff like a tiny peice of cheese or some rice.

The last 3 days are winding down and I want to be down to 45 by the end so I have good results.

It's really to bad you have been sick for most of the challenge, working out when sick is not to great of an idea, it really makes losing weight hard.

Regardless, I hope the last month has been a positive start to getting healthier. Myself, I've lost 8-9 lbs since you/we started the challenge. However I've extended my challenge to include quitting smoking pot because losing weight while smoking is rather difficult. Lol

Also props to CatsPajamas! Droppin it like it's hot

If you're interested into losing a high amount of fat in a shorter period of time, I recommend looking into ketosis. There is a good subreddit for it. The issue is maintaining a lower weight when coming off the extreme carbohydrate reduction, it's not by any means a permanent diet but it seems to be very effective. This is a diet only plan, it would be much easier to maintain with any sort of schedule you might have. My limited understanding of it is that you basically piss the fat out of your body.

Im starting to diet/exercise more ( mostly because Im betting another overweight friend) but would also like to be healthier. I have a few questions, general ones:

What is the daily burnoff of calories w/o doing anything? Im shooting for about 2200 calories intake a day, and was wondering if thats too high or low?

How much running/biking is needed to burn 100calories?

Is counting calories the best way to diet?

Any tips would be greatly appreciated!

Get rid of the concept of 'losing weight.' See yourself in the body you wish to live in and use that image and the feelings you get from the image to make well rationed decisions regarding your ultimate outcome. If you focus on the concept of losing weight, you will be under the subliminal impression of loss and will look for it later. This is a large reason why a lot of people regain weight after losing it. However, if you maintain a vision of your ideal body you will stay in equilibrium once you reach your outcome.

I've gotten out of shape as well bud. So I plan to get a gym membership and will take on this challenge.

So last month I finally started this diet(I know... kinda dragged my feet). I went from 225lbs to 205lbs in about a month with just a steady diet and calorie counting(thanks MyFitnessPal app for android). I plan on getting a gym membership as well and I'm hoping that takes it even farther down! I'd like to get down to 175lbs... So here is to hoping lol

Exactly the same here. Hard to begin, feels good after a while, no gym (and no graphs either).
Take the worst pictures you can of your belly while it's there and you'll be so proud later on.

I know this is bumping the thread in a way. But I just felt like I needed to share that this post has motivated me, and lets me know losing weight is possible. Right now I weigh what you used to weigh at the same height 5'10 - 220 pounds about. It's been about a week since I cut out soda from my diet and other junk foods. Right now I'm drinking only mostly water, some juice time from time. I gotta say drinking water saves a lot of money. When you go out to eat, a drink is 3 dollars about, but that healthy delicious water, is free! Even if I don't see results as quickly as I want to I'm going to continue with this diet and exercise. I feel healthier already! though I feel more hungrier because I reduced my calorie in take by 500-1000, I resist the urge and If I want to eat I just eat a lot of pears or bananas. Let's make my ideal goal the same as your goal, 175 lbs. So I am hoping by January 2013 I reach this goal (before I transfer to my university). Wish me luck!

Is there any update to this at all? Hope sheth didn't give up. He should take some inspiration from cats pajamas who has lost 75 pounds, since probably april I'm guessing since he was still overweight at ipl 4. It's pretty awesome how much weight cats has lost. If he can do it, you can too!
