In all honesty, I didn’t even know that there was a professional Brood War scene until I started following Pro-StarCraft 2 at the start of SC2’s release. I had heard of the Brood War scene but I couldn’t name a single pro-gamer. What’s even worse is that my friend Fallen and I had played countless hours of UMS games in Brood War (I’ll forever have a soft spot for Lurker Defense games) and I didn’t even know he was B/B+ on iCCup. I played hundreds of hours of UMS and Fastest Maps games and literally had zero idea about the entire competitive scene.
I feel that as a StarCraft 2 fan, I’m almost obligated to be BW fan. Ever play the State of the Game game where you bet over/under on how long it will take BW to be mentioned? Ever read about the BW vs SC2 threads where everyone laments about how bad SC2 is in comparison? Ever heard the squeals and cheers anytime BoxeR is mentioned? The endless love for NonY?
I don’t fully understand all of this. Yet.

Pimpest Play 2004: DAT ‘RINE MICRO
This was my first real exposure to the pro-BW scene. Fallen sent me this clip for some reason and I remember I watched it over and over and over again. This shit is wild; it still hurts my head every time I watch it. Since then, I’ve caught glimpses of BW history. A few BoxeR matches on nevake….some BW streams….a few questions here and there. But there’s so much I still don’t know.
Finally I have started to explore this MASSIVE history that has eluded me. The 10 years of epicness that I missed out on.
I recently started an internship that is super laid-back. With lots of downtime and no internet filters, I started to seriously watch nevake VODs. I watched the TSL2 finals with NonY versus Mondragon. Holy shit that was wild. Corsair/Reaver is pretty fun to watch. I finally SAW why NonY is so beloved. Then as Team 8 was being formed and players like Midas and Tempest retired, I watched more and more VODs. Tempest’s hero dragoon? Goddamn.

Tempest vs Light 1/3/2009 MBC Survivor: DAT ‘GOON MICRO
Fast forward to Saturday 11/26 when I watched my first live ProLeague match ever: Grape versus free. I then managed to miss JangBi versus Light and Stork versus Zero (Bad CPTBadAss, Bad). The thing that gets me every time is that the builds are so crisp; it’s so refined. I remember listening to Day[9] and Chill talking about the finer points of an Overpool (I had to Liquipedia that bad boy). It boggles my mind that BW fans and players can decipher a build order based on supplies 8 through 10. If he builds drone at 8 or extractor at 9, people can see EXACTLY where the build goes at 100-150 supply.
Next day, I watched Hero win Dreamhack Winter 2011 with Fallen. While waiting for the Quake finals to end, we went to get coffee. And I tried asking him about sAviOr and the match-fixing scandal. As he explained the drama to me, I realized that it was literally only a year ago that it happened but to me, it felt like another universe.
Brood War is SO fascinating.
Remember that State of the Game when Day[9] asked that if basketball and American football can co-exist, why can’t Brood War and StarCraft 2? I agree. I may be chobo at Brood War, but I WANT TO KNOW. I’ll leave you with these last two items:
The Holy Wars, were the games between sAviOr and Nal_Ra, before the days of that womanly toss, aka Bisu, Midas and Nal_Ra were the ones who challenged sAviOr. Most notably Nal_Ra and sAviOr's series in Pringles MSL Season 1 and 2, were referred to as the Holy Wars.
Gom Star Invitational Finals. This is when Tasteless was pretty new to commentating, and Flash was a young rising star. These finals, Flash vs Stork, are incredibly exciting:
Stork is known as the Supreme Commander because of his amazing carrier play. A few years ago, fans made him a golden carrier badge, and even now you'll often see him wear it next to his OSL badge ^^
No clue what the Bisu cough (is it 어헣?)/ninja mask is though. I'm a bad fan T__T
I'm pretty much in the same boat as you, OP. So much good stuff to watch. What got me hooked was watching the debut of the Beesuit against Savior. That build was so sick. It's no wonder why many toss players are trying to imitate Bisu's style in SC2 (only HerO is succeeding).
I actually kinda surprised no one has recommended Day9 when comes to actually learning more about BW. All his earliest stuff is BW centric.

Careful there coach. People misunderstanding the bisu build (especially English commentators) is infamously mocked. it's not just a forge expansion or pylon at your natural. I'm not sure SC2 really even has the units to make it's own Bisu build...
@FractalsonFire: I'm all about the gameplay...Although I've gotta saw that BW pro-gamers have the best haircuts.
@awwnuts07: OMG, that Sair/DT build? Genius. It makes too much sense. Plus, I like the *pew pew* noise out of the corsairs and the *shummmmm shummmmm* noise that Dark Templars make. ^_^

I didn't mean to say HerO was trying to recreate the Beesuit in particular, but that HerO is trying to develop a style that is similar to Bisu's. But we're digressing from the OP's topic. This isn't an SC2 discussion, but I will say I'm glad there are players in the SC2 scene that are moving the game more towards a BW style.
To the OP, I'm going to guess from your icon that you're a terran player. Even if that is the case, I still highly suggest watching Bisu. Be in awe of his god-like mutli-tasking and incredible hair.

What do you mean a style similar to Bisu ? He's the biggest jaedong look alike ever ! + Show Spoiler +
Ok, I'm out
But don't watch Bisu. He's bad, the only thing he's good at is flipping fast between screens. If you have to watch a protoss, watch someone smart, like Nal_rA or Stork. + Show Spoiler +
Well, there's already enough Bisu fans on teamliquid, you can't blame me can't you ?

Definitely. Real Protosses don't bother with lame shit like 3-0ing Savior at his prime, winning consecutive MSLs (defeating Stork as well, no less), or revolutionizing the PvZ matchup.
I love Stork, Reach, Nal_rA, Kingdom, Jangbi, etc. too, but I don't understand why this blog has suddenly turned into an Antagonize Bisu thread. Why not just watch them all? They all have their own charm, different styles, strengths, and weaknesses, and their games are all enjoyable. We should be promoting more BW (and more Brotoss love!), not discouraging the OP from watching certain players -__-

Real Protosses bother winning OSLs though. They also don't lose to Hyvaa.

Cool fast edit, before I was able to say Bisu's made it to the Ro8 in Daum 07, EVER 07, Bacchus 08, Incruit 08, and Batoo 09, 2 of which were also Ro4s. Of course, you're right, he's yet to win actually one. But if OSL winners are the only real players and the only ones worth watching, well, we'd be rather short on those, wouldn't we? Only 23 players in 12 years. I guess Zero, Hydra, Sea, Light, Leta, Kal, Iris, Chojja, and 95% of the rest of the progamers aren't real players. I guess Yellow wasn't a real Zerg, and Midas wasn't a real Terran.
I suppose by other your criteria, Jangbi (0-3 against Hyvaa), Reach (0-1), and Anytime (0-2) also aren't real Protosses. Oh, and since Hyvaa helped knock Jaedong out of the last OSL, Jaedong is no longer a real zerg either. How do a couple of losses at a certain given time invalidate a person's status as a "real" player? Flash got eliminated from the PDPop MSL 0-2 by Ssak and Classic. Does that automatically make him bad?
And throughout all of this, you've ignored the actual point I was making: What is the purpose of discouraging the OP from watching certain players? If you don't personally like Bisu or his play, no problem, but the thread title was "Help me love BW," not "Tell me what you hate about BW." From what I see, the OP watched Bisu vs. Savior, and he enjoyed it. It should be up to him to decide which games are worth watching or not. I don't see why people can't just recommend their favorite players and moments without detracting from the opinions of others and making fellow BW fans feel shitty. We should be working together to get more people interested in BW, not pissing on each other over which players are better.

Never mess with a bisu fan girl , still I rather be watching JangBi,Stork,Stats over Bisu that's just my preference ;D
LOL Kiett you are awesome. But I'm sure they were kidding. If not, well, they should be pitied because they aren't Bisu fans.
I'm sure you know by now that the very best articles written on BW (aside from Korean articles) are the TLFEs, or Team Liquid Final Edits. They helped me rediscover my love for BW after leaving it for 5 years (due to iloveoov's emotional win over boxer).
If on the off chance you haven't read them, please do read the following (no order)
1. God of the Battlefield part 1 by Ver (deepest article in terms of strategy and showcases the fallen Maestro's genius) 2. I Loved Victory part 1 and 2 by Plexa (absolutely amazing piece on the most powerful mind to have ever graced BW) 3. The Storm Zerg by pubbanana (very emotional and beautiful piece on the greatest finalist of all time) 4. Only Until Midnight by HonestTea (another emotional and beautiful piece on the history of the game) 5. I spit hot fire by Sp1ralArch1tect (funniest TLFE which'll make you appreciate the importance of being unique)
and then read the following in order
1. Revolutionary Magic by Hot_Bid (Bisu) 2. Heir Apparent by Hot_Bid (Jaedong) 3. The Ultimate Weapon by DocHelvetica (Flash)

Oh man, apparently there's a love/hate relationship with Bisu? It's ok everyone, I have a compromise; can we all agree he's got an amazing haircut? ^_^
Also, my ears are still ringing from when I watched Reach's Lockdown from the Pimpest Plays. Those fan girls man....

I'm more a reader than a watcher so I implore you, if you have time, to take a step back into the past and into the wonderful world of Broodwar by reading ALL the Final Edits.
I remember randomly stumblings on God of the Battlefield a LONG time ago. And it was so sick; such a good article. Of course then, I was more of a BW noob than I am now haha.
OK OK OK SO SO HEAR THIS JAEDONG THE NEW ZERG FRESH OFF HIS OSL WIN AND BISU STILL THE REIGNING PROTOSS champion and pvz genius finally get to play vs each other was sOoOoO freaking hyped for this game. battle of the 2 best players in 2009. don't miss this.
imagine that these 2 players are sort of ushering in a new era of brood war where everyone is like nada but maybe even faster and even better at multitasking.
so here it is . couldn't find 1 part vid for the normal vod but Bisu FPview of this epic freaking game is even better.
