Hi TL,

Somewhat inspired by the guy who made a blog about going "all-in" on stock trading, I've decided to make a commitment to doing more translation practice over the upcoming months.

The plan is simple. I'm gonna translate one short article a day on the following four day cycle. Some of it will be about ESPORTS, but most of it probably won't be.

1) Korean --> English
2) Chinese --> English (the easiest)
3) English --> Chinese
4) English --> Korean (fail central)

I know that I could just do this in a word file on my computer, but posting it here in TL blogs gives me a greater sense of accountability, and it also allows me to try to persuade Waxangel to let me on the TL translation team receive feedback from the many fine and experienced translators in the TL community.

In general, I would describe my translation style as liberal rather than literal, favouring to reword things to make them sound more natural in the target language rather than sticking word for word to the original text.

Anyway, at the bottom of each article, I will post a list of things I am unsure of or have questions about. It would be awesome if people who are better at this than me could give advice or corrections, so feel free to leave any comments. I hope this will be a learning experience for me and a test of my own capabilities.

So here's today's entry, a band review that I'm working on for my friend (most of the things I translate won't be this long, this is kind of a one-off thing):

First Single Album Review
Fans of rock music, especially those who enjoy traditional American rock, have probably heard of “Southern Rock” and in particular will remember Lynyrd Skynrd, the symbolic band of this genre.
Even for people confident in their English ability, it's hard not to be confused the first time you see this band's name in writing. The members of Lynyrd Skynrd made the word by changing the spelling of the name of the teacher who treated them most strictly during their school days, so of course the pronunciation was never going to be easy. In the end they themselves admitted the difficulty of the pronunciation, and the title of their debut album came to be “Pronounced 'Lĕh-'nérd 'Skin-'nérd".

And it's thanks to 'Cryim', the subject of today's review, that I ended up starting this introduction by talking about Lynyrd Skynrd. Most people who have dutifully studied standard English will probably pronounce Cryim as “crime” the first time they see it. And in anticipation of the misunderstanding and resulting confusion, Cryim already took the trouble of having the pronunciation of their band's name, [cri:m], printed phonetically on the cover of their first single album in order to prevent mistakes. It was thanks to this that I was reminded of Lynyrd Skynrd's debut album.

Just like the phrase “Indie Band” conjures up a particular kind of image, in Korea to some extent it makes you think of the reality of local bands who haven't been leaked through the mainstream media and don't even play in Hongdae or Sinchon, like a workers band struggling in poor conditions, trying to earn a living at the same time as making music.
Cryim, who are based in Cheonju, the self-admitted hometown of flavour and art, is one of North Jeolla's representative Indie bands. Formed in the hot July Summer of 2006, Cryim had to overcome a lot of difficulties replacing members during this early period, and said that there were several crises. Come to think of it, the album production was also far from smooth sailing, and there were times when even keeping the band itself together was difficult.

Indeed, in an age with so many indie bands composed of various different personalities, sounds, instruments and stage manners parading around, it's easy to feel that music conveyed through this kind of genuine, honest sound and feeling is not uncommon. Cryim's defining feature is precisely the fact that they're not trying too hard to copy an excessively electronic sound and style, or trying too hard to look pretty or vainly pursue an empty and listless sound.
Just like lotion boldly applied to a woman's unblemished face, you can compare [Cryim's sound] to the young freshness and solidarity of a 20 something year old girl, or the vitality of a young man who tackles challenges head on without trying to get tricky.

Questions

1) In the third paragraph, I'm not sure how to translate 그나마 or 그러다보니
2) I had a lot of trouble with the sentence in the fourth paragraph from 굳이 to 아닌가 싶다. I think I managed to convey the meaning, but I had to rearrange it a lot and it still looks weird =/
3) I know that the last sentence of the fourth paragraph is a metaphor, but I don't think I really grasped it properly

I don't know Korean, but I wanted to take the time and do a shoutout to you and praise your determination. I study Japanese at the Ruhr University Bochum and I know that what you're going to do is a great way to practice your language skills. May I ask you how you came to learn Korean and Chinese?

Best regards

I'm majoring in both Chinese and Korean language at university, so I'll be following this blog with great interest. :D

What's your background? You said Chinese > English is the easiest, is that because your Chinese level is higher than your Korean or are you an ABC?

I'm finding Korean quite a bit harder than Chinese T_T

@Froadac: nothing right now, but I'm looking to get into the field of translation/interpreting

@Jasarn: I'm not of Chinese descent. I find Chinese translation easier for a number of reasons. It's true that my Chinese level is higher than Korean, but I also find it easier to translate because you don't have to deal with so much grammar. With Korean, even if I understand the sentence perfectly it can be really hard to find the best way to express that meaning in English, but with Chinese as long as I can understand the sentence then I can usually translate it quickly and accurately.

I'm actually back in NZ right now on holiday, but I'll be returning to Korea in a couple of weeks. Sounds like I'm missing out on a lot of fun stuff while I'm away though.
