So this is the second time I'm writing about music - the first time was last year when I wrote a full wall of text about Devin Townsend's music, complete with youtube videos! Go check that out if you haven't but come back here asap because in a lot of ways this music is even better.

--

This band is amazing. They recently released their second album, which prompted me to write this blog. Some background info: the band consists of three members in Tosin Abasi (lead guitar), Javier Reyes (rhythm guitar), and Navene Koperweis (drums). Abasi puts together most of the music, actually the record company originally wanted him to do a completely solo album. The man is a musical genius in my opinion, his arrangements are so beautiful and heavy.

Their music is purely instrumental, which is a huge plus in my opinion, because the complexity of the music would be utterly diminished if someone tried to sing over it. I wish there were more metal bands that focused heavily on melody and fired the singer, because this combination is just perfect.

Now, on to the songs. I have to tell you right now to BUY THESE ALBUMS if you like them, because they are totally worth it and if you're going to buy music it might as well be from an up-and-coming band. But if you don't want to buy it, every song they've made is on youtube, and they're all worth listening to at least once.

First album was self titled, released in 2009, and I spent weeks listening to it over and over again while writing science papers for my senior year of college. Frankly, listening to this album these days reminds me of computational fluid dynamics. But it's still soooo good.

Tempting Time - Song 1 Album 1, generally the first song people hear.
+ Show Spoiler +

CAFO - their single from this album. They have a sick music video for it, but there's an HD video for better sound quality that I'll link instead.
+ Show Spoiler +

On Impulse - Somewhat lighter than those two, but still amazingly complex. These songs are really difficult to describe, but this song definitely hints at how the sound will evolve on the next album.
+ Show Spoiler +

Inamorata - The last song I'll link from this album is probably my favorite. Go listen to the rest of the album after this, again it's all on youtube and it will melt your face.
+ Show Spoiler +

Second album is called Weightless and it was released just two weeks ago! Overall it's not as heavy as AAL was, which disappointed me somewhat at first, but after listening to it a half dozen times I'm starting to like it even more than the first album. Also, I'm going to link every song from it, because I'm convinced if you hear them all you'll realize that you have to buy the album just for the better sound quality.

An Infinite Regression

Odessa
+ Show Spoiler +

Somnarium - This one really fucking stands out to me. Amazing.
+ Show Spoiler +

Earth Deptarture - Probably the heaviest song on the album and another mind blowing success.
+ Show Spoiler +

Isolated Incidents - This song was released on youtube officially in September, and for fans it was the first song we heard from this album.
+ Show Spoiler +

Do Not Go Gently - The joke on youtube is "Go Djently".
+ Show Spoiler +

New Eden - I wish this song was three minutes longer.
+ Show Spoiler +

Cylindrical Sea
+ Show Spoiler +

Espera - This specifically sets the tone for the next song, watch in sequence on youtube.
+ Show Spoiler +

To Lead You to An Overwhelming Question - LOVE the breakdown at 2:20. Climax of the album perhaps? Note: the uploader failed and there's a minute of silence at the end of this video that shouldn't be there.
+ Show Spoiler +

Weightless - Title track that, of course, lives up to and surpasses its name.
+ Show Spoiler +

David - I hope everyone listened to all the songs and made it to this one, but you just scrolled down to the end, definitely listen to this. It's unlike any of the previous songs and it's just incredible... I don't think I've ever heard a more emotional instrumental song.
+ Show Spoiler +

Well I hope you liked it. This music is the shit, no doubt about it. I'll leave off with what to look for in the future.

Abasi and Reyes recently formed a "supergroup" band with Suicidal Tendancies drummer Eric Moore and ex-The Mars Volta wind instrumentalist Adrian Terrazas called T.R.A.M. (first initial of each member's last name). They haven't released anything yet officially but there is an unmastered version of the song Endeavor on youtube, along with a number of live performances. I can't wait for them to release their music, it's going to be epic.

Here's Endeavor by T.R.A.M. (unfinished)

I have been listening to Animals as Leaders for a long time now. I REALLY enjoyed their first album. I just received "Weightless" in the mail and I'm looking forward to jamming out in my car while driving around town listening to this godly album.

I'm listening to weightless now, for the first time. It's so sick.

About 3 months ago I used to wake up and listen to CAFO and then go for a jog. That song is fuckin' motivating.
Wishing you well.

You know what.... I started listening to Animals as Leaders just the other day when i friend put them on (and forced all my college friends to watch the CAFO video to appreciate their talent the next week) and well, when I saw this blog post I *censored* with joy. But seriously, thank you for writing this. More people need to see their awesomeness, and I can't wait to get their new album.
Can't even describe how amazing i've started thinking the band is.

Animals as leaders is simply amazing, I got to see them live about 2 weeks ago in Ft. Lauderdale. They went from a band I really enjoyed listening to, to one of my favorite bands. Live was simply amazing, I recommend this band to anyone with a functioning brain!

They're definitely skilled musicians but modern techy metal just doesn't appeal to me for the most part. Maybe I'll give them a few more chances but .. meh.

They are amazing. I saw them live for the first time a few months back and it was sick! Especially their drummer, it's insane that he can actually play all that stuff in person without missing a beat.

Was that in the Melkweg with them and Between the Buried and Me? If so, high five!

The first album was actually solo work from Abasi. Although "Bulb" (Misha Mansoor from Periphery) helped him out a bit.
Just wanted to point that out ;D In your post it sounds as if the three worked together on the first album.
