Neat write-up, cool to see some more DotA stuff around here every day~

I love the whole night and day thing and always have since I first started playing. It's not just for heroes like Nightstalker, it adds a whole new level of strategy where you can plan to gank right when night comes around and your enemies' vision range is lower. Of course escaping from enemies is much easier during night time and it allows for some pretty sick getaways.

Runes really allow for a whole new game in itself for the mid lane. Whoever dominates the runes has a higher chance of dominating mid, and sometimes it just becomes a chase to the rune spots. Of course this means that wards on one of the spots becomes very important so it doesn't become a guessing game on where the rune is. This is where supports shine!

Thanks for writing this up. I have really been eager to get into the Dota 2 beta, but I didn't play much of the original. I played a lot of LoL and some HoN though. I got pretty decent at LoL (1600 elo) but the game kind of stagnated, and the people you meet on the ladder was just too much. I would really like to get into competitive Dota 2, and these guides are a great way to learn some of the basics before I even play. I have one question though, are there a lot of comps that revolve around using a jungler, or is it a niche strategy? I know in LoL it was essential to have someone jungling, but I'm not sure about Dota. Hope you can reply to this, and hope I can win the beta key!

Great guide, hehe never knew Roshan had a 75% spell resistance, I just thought he was immune.

Really nice read, it will be very helpful for newer players looking to get into Dota as I know it can feel like a constant uphill struggle, especially when you're getting flamed for being new! Kudos.

I wish that they would remove the 00:00 rune like they did in HoN, it's much better.

Probably should've mentioned that killing jungle creeps 15~ seconds before a new wave spawn will block the next one from spawning. Handy thing to know, so you don't end up waiting for a whole minute for the next wave ><

Else a decent guide for newbies I'd presume, would be difficult to put myself in their place!

Great post. Have been looking for a good Dota basics guide to get me into the game. My only MOBA experience is LoL and HoN, this fits exactly what I was looking for. Thanks!
