I tried to think about this really hard but I couldn't name a single country. Maybe the Isle of Man? lol It's a real place and I'm sure it has a minority on it... like 1 person. Maybe not. Trying to make light of it but it really is kind of sad =/

Stopping discrimination/racism completely is impossible because of human emotions. People will be jealous, people will develop a dislike, and people will continue to hate. The only thing we can do is promote tolerance, to co-exist with minimal interaction. Asking anything more will be too difficult for people to adapt to, simply because many people are too ignorant and set in their ways. We can see this in many Asian communities where the adults who were not born in western culture, these adults are often the most racist. This is not always true, but in my experience this is how it is and has been for the last couple decades.

racism is present in everyone, including yourself. the only people who claim to not be racist are those affected by racism and hate how it feels themselves. it's bad, but so is bullying and a lot of other things that humans do, but nothing will ever stop it happening.

Puerto Rico is pretty good on non racial discrimination, but I haven't lived there in 11 years so maybe it has changed.

Edit: But I think racism exists in some form everywhere no matter what.

You can't single out something as big as a country. There will be racism, yes even in Canada, and it will vary greatly from a city to another one, from a neighborhood to another one. Different origins often means different cultures with different values which more often then not means disagreements, see where I'm going.

To not 'be racist' is extremely difficult I think, and it takes a great deal of effort to always be 'open-minded' in interactions. It's hard to change perceptions born of your environment and it takes a special kind of person to be able to get over that and be not racist.

Of course, then those people are labelled 'fake asian (banana)', 'traitors' or conversely have 'yellow fever'. (I know I'm massively generalising).

I think it has to start at the grass-roots level and with the young, and they've got to be actively encouraged. I don't think that keeping 'homeland' identity and adopting the culture of a new place especially growing up is mutually exclusive, but it's hard to strike a good balance. That said, I don't feel a shred of sympathy for those that travel abroad for University and avoid using the native language of that country as much as possible. That's just asking to be ostracised and creating a bad image for a particular cultural group.

[For background I'm Thai, grew up in Malaysia (in an international school) and I'm doing University in Australia]

Yeah, Chinese people aren't exactly the most open-minded people. Hell, in China parents even forbid their children to marry other Chinese people from specific cities or provinces because they're "untrustworthy" or "dirty". But when Chinese people go outside the country they tend to huddle together and are suddenly comrades in arms against the foreign devils lol.

Anyways, basically expect racism as the norm rather than the exception

Ahh that explains everything.. Was getting a really familiar vibe I couldn't put my hand on, esp with the "fake asian" part haha.

On topic: From everything I've seen/heard: pretty sure that discrimination /subcategorizing happens everywhere. Might be differences in attitudes though, such as how much people find it offensive or acceptable.

This is so false that it isn't even funny. You don't even have to go into a sociological study for this. My own personal experiences alone are enough to attest. If you even read the paper or hear the news you'll know that there are racist activities here and there. There is even a Canada subforum on Stormfront.

That being said, Canada is much better than America, Korea, Japan, China, Australia, the UK, France, and many many other countries. Canada is one of the best at this, but there is still a quite noticeable racist undertone here as well.

LOL so that's why his name was so familiar. Wassup koreasilver.

I had the same reaction to the fake asian thing as to the fake Korean. Just... "What..?" I also don't like how you categorized the fake asians and fobs. I mean I understand concept of a Chinese person trying to pretend to be Korean by eating kim chi exclsively with raw eggs and uttering out broken Korean, or a white person trying to pass off his wannabe Korean with the fact that he took classes for it to satisfy his superiority complex in the wonderful field of language. But where are the 2nd generation asians that were born into the country in your systematic diagram?

It's quite rude to list them as "The Rest" category.

Frodoguy, are you Asian? From past blogs and this is sounds like you're not. You found only 2 of the broad categories and there's a deeper classification. For example, aside from Fobs and Fake Asians, there's also Bleached. Those are the Asians that are so disconnected from their heritage (usually born in North America) that their practically white. Within Fobs, for Chinese at least, there's Mainlander, Hong Kong, and Taiwanese. Hong Kong be the coolest yo, we can cruise with everyone cuz we speak Cantonese and Mandarin and Mainlanders (especially from the south) and Taiwanese love TVB. Within Mainlander it breaks down into North and South (it's not some sort of rivalry and it's not exclusive groups, they just like to identify what cities and towns they come from).

Now "Fake Asians" is a term that's used for varying degrees of ABC and CBCness. I'm going to use Asian because that's what most people I know that know call me. For example: "Wow Teh_LiNk, you're so Asian. I thought you'd be more White." If you were Fob, then they'd just say "Wow Teh_LiNk, you're so Fob." Some Asians can switch between being bleached and fob. Where as Fobs are usually only into music, fashion, etc, from where they were originally from, a lot of Asians are into other Asian cultures, like a Chinese person is into Korean music and food.

Personally, I'm an Asian that's on the extreme side. Fobs don't dislike me, I'm friends with a lot of true Chinese (mainlander and Hong Kong)fobs. They find me cute for some odd reason (especially the girls ). I speak a very childish Cantonese because I left Hong Kong when I was very young and they think my use of slang that kids use is hilariously cute. I also speak Chinese with English words sprinkled in (lack of vocabulary) which they envy and find cute and hilarious (ho duk yi)

Korean fobs though, I have a sneaking suspicion that they think I'm a try hard or something. The Korean Wave got me and I got into Korean stuff too. I have a few Korean friends and they think it's all cool and all that that I like Korean stuff. But they're not fobs, they're like me, really Asian.

My attempt at categorizing Koreans from my experience in Canada..

Mmm. I don't completely disagree with the OP, but he's describing everything from the view of the FOBs, which is pretty unfair. The "fake Asians" that the OP describes are those that go through the worst identity conflicts, as they want to retain ties with their mother culture despite having spent most of their life overseas. I don't think that having been born overseas makes you any less Korean; it's only when some flaunt their Korean status(because being Asian is suddenly so cool these days) that they start to irritate me.

Wait, so not only are you attempting to speak about Asians when you're not Asian, now you're trying to say that the things that happen in Canada within the past couple of years never actually happened... when you're over in Australia being a weeaboo.

Okay. Carry on then.

fobs vs banana men -.-

Asians are status oriented and that is pretty much all there is to it. For the banana men, if you are not born there then the length of your stay in the country determines your worth to them, unless of course the fob in question have some secret weapon in their sleeve like have good looks, really rich or is a genius in some form or other.

fobs on the other hand carry on don't give a single fuck to all this. lol

me <=== fob
