Someone who does good things for the community (apparently reddit forgot about MKP coming to Orlando?) gets completely torn apart simply because he makes some opinion on semantics and says SC2 isn't as grand in scale to him as BW has been. You know what? He's right. You can argue all you want about "real esports" or whatever pointless category, but as big as SC2 is it is obviously not as big as BW yet and it definitely doesn't help to have the reddit community be so destructive.
in korea, its true, bw is bigger than sc2
but sc2 is already bigger than bw on a global scale.
Thank you for all what you have done Milkis and Good Luck in your future life. But don't QQ and resign at your future job after you get chewed up by your boss or customers. Life's not a ponyfarm you know?
You've got to take Wheat with a pinch of salt. He's a potty mouth and over reacts (ie blows up) about pretty much everything.
I fully agree that BW is the only esport by your definition but your definition is controversial. If you're going to air something controversial, you need the thick skin to back it up.
Have you ever heard some of the exchanges on Lo3 with Wheat? Basically Wheat has gotten something wrong and thinks he's being attacked so he'll go on an all-out verbal offensive. After some reasoning he realizes he might have been too harsh and chills. He is, after all, a cool guy. He listens to reason.
You should have just came on the next Lo3 and clarified, this whole thing just comes off as a big tantrum.
While i like you (you and John bring humanity to translation, you're not pumped with fake enthusiasm and you're generally likeable), i think you need to realize you also like esports. I think you see the potential in SC2 and the globalization of something beautiful that was created in Korea - and i think you want to be a part of it.
Just come back lol, nobody cares and as for witch hunts on reddit, Incontrol and some others have suffered through much worse. We'll all be laughing at this little incident next Blizzcon when you see the fruits of our collective labor.
If it is truly your decision to quit then so be it. I don't think its worth quitting what you do if you love to do it, over something like this. But maybe you DON'T love to do it, in which case its completely valid for you to leave something if you don't enjoy it. Korean news will be found, hundreds of Korean and English speaking TL forumgoers will see it, and maybe one person will translate it and post it here, and the news will always come to TL in that way.
But now you know what kelly went through 50 times over on reddit and where you stacked up that hate by saying you hated that her name was "milkies". The times she's been called a dumb cunt, a bitch, a whore, for untrue stories. The times they say "She's such a shitty commentator" or "My singaporean friend says they don't like her either" or "every other caster is better". To a girl that has at least had the gall to stick up for something she has been around and loved for 6 years. To have someone who was in a public spotlight like you, post that you wish SHE'D change her name?
Sure maybe people will draw comparisons to me and Slasher with the whole name thing, but I've had my screenname since, guess what, 1999 when I first started playing BW battle.net on us west and playing UMS games. The same year that Slasher was playing under his screenname $lasher on WC2. I may be the noob in esports compared to him, but I don't go around saying, fuck I sure hate Slasher having that name. Because through the years he's been in esports he has earned it. Maybe now this helps you or the readers of this blog understand a little bit more, the bandwagon of hate that can go around, and this'll have to be yet another example of someone experiencing the other side of it.
I think the most notable things I saw in this whole mess is that with your fame and public status did NOT come the fact that you magically became a beacon of esports knowledge. Are you a translator, or an editorial journalist. In your position if you are going to write something of that magnitude are you going to get your facts straight or just write based off of your self-admitted lack of knowledge on other games. When you put yourself in a prominent position and the pedestal gets that high, you need to expect that the fall is going to be much more severe.
Kelly has been through this countless times just in a year. Xeris went through this with the MLG chair thing. I could give you other examples from countless other esports. If you quit, I hope you truly thought it through and not just in your moment of despair, and made your decision. If you quit, then quit. If you decide to come back, then keep your chin up and do what has been what you want to do. But the last thing I hope to happen here is wishy-washiness.
The popular meme in, guess what, another esport that isn't Starcraft, is in the Dota/Hon community where they say "Man up"
I guess it's your own decision, but honestly I don't think the reasons you gave are so terrible that it would require you to quit altogether. There are people in the community that had to endure far more but they just didn't care (or at least not enough) and kept doing their thing. I appreciate that you translated at events and some of the Korean internet posts, and it is sad to see you leave. But I personally don't agree, but in the end it's your decision and you should do what you think is best for you. Goodluck with whatever you decide to do in the future, I hope to see you again someday.

milkis you always come across as a little too thin-skinned.. nonetheless know that the people who matter on tl will always appreciate you and what youve done for the community... you just take way too many petty insignificant remarks to heart and its really a detriment to your character sometimes. i hope you reconsider your decision, cuz youve really been an asset to the sc2 community at large as of late.
Milkis, this will be one of those posts you look back on and become totally embarrassed by. You have built up some tremendous goodwill here. You have one dud post on reddit and suddenly your world is crumbling. This will be a classic learning experience for you; it's just unfortunate that the whole community has to witness it. All you can do now is take your lickings, let it blow over (which it will), and move on.
By the way, I couldn't help but think of Arnold being lowered into the lava when reading the overly dramatic thread title:
It's not that everyone instantly stopped appreciating what you've done for the community, but when you post something that polarizing on the internet, you shouldn't expect a little backlash, you should expect a LOT. Not to mention you basically alienated a lot of people with that reddit thread. Not everyone is a fan of starcraft and even less people than that are solely starcraft fans.
while reading the post you really get a new perspective of this whole thing. If you go out of your way to offend several communities how the hell do expect to not get any consequences for doing so?
I didn't see the post about BW vs SC2 so this comes as a big surprise to me, I hope you change your decision, I don't now which posts could affect you so much that you want to quit, but I don't want to judge. Whatever you do, don't do something you regret later
The world SUCKS. No matter what there is someone out there who is going to hate on you. You could be the perfect man and please everyone and STILL there's gonna be that one asshole that just doesn't care and want to insult you.....
This is pretty much the online community: 40% complete dicks 50% decent people 10% ballers
Don't let those 40% dicks bring you down just cause they don't like you....
Milkis, I think you're awesome, and I'm sorry that people aren't down with you. I really appreciate everything you've done for the community. You will always be remembered fondly by many people, and you can always come back if you feel like it. good luck have fun!
