We have rats in our attic. It's disgusting and freaky and I am freaked out by it. So, I decided to buy some rat traps and set them up in the attic. I only bought 2 and hoped that I would maybe catch one rat. I set them up on Sunday afternoon. An hour ago, I went up to check to see if I caught any rats. Honestly, I put off checking this long because I was seriously freaked out about what I would see if I went up there. Well, I went up there just now and both of them had rats caught.

It took me one whole freaking hour just to psych myself up to get up into the attic and put these things into bags. I was so scared to get close to them and pick them up to put into the bag. Here is a picture of me freaked out and trying to gain the courage to go get these things down. I literally stood on this ladder for an hour trying to convince myself to do this.

I used snap traps with peanut butter as bait. There are still rats in the attic. I am going to buy 4 more traps tomorrow and set them up there.

our cats used to dump a few killed birds and mice as "presents" in our basement a few years ago.. you can get used to that stuff pretty easily. Just "train" a bunch, just like it is with everything.

Yea, I think if I had to go up there again, I would be a tiny bit more alright. I would still be freaked though. I had to squint my eyes 90% so that I couldn't really see what I was doing when I lifted the rats and put them in a bag.

DUDE I know where you come from when you said you needed to psych yourself for this. So we set up a trap on our kitchen counter (FUCK) and I'm like ok cool np.... WAIT FUCK THAT IT'S GROSS AHHHHHHHH. I kept telling myself "I ain't no bitch, I got this" NOPE I didn't got this it took me a whole 5 minutes maybe to do this and I had to get some long instrument to help me and holy shit I have never been so grossed out ever. But man an hour? Damn~~~~

Also it took so long to clean up the mice shit... ugh.

This is seriously how I was the entire time. I was like, HOLY CRAP WTF IS THIS I CANT TOUCH THIS I CANT LOOK AT THIS I CANT DO THIS OMFG WTF!!! I was literally panicking hardcore. I had to tell myself that I can't be a frikkin wuss and that I have to do this. Finally, I set up my clock to say that in 3 minutes, no matter what, I was gonna go up there and be a man and frikkin lift that trap 3 inches into a bag and then come down. My god this experience was frikkin traumatic.

why are you buying 4 new traps when you could reuse the other two, there might be more than 4 up there too. you can catch all of them with the two you already have.

It took me 1 hour to get up there just to move the rats into a bag. How long is going to take me to unhinge the rat trap and then move the rat into the bag? I would rather just buy a new rat trap. It cost $2 per rat trap. Is this wasteful? Maybe next time I will try and reuse them.

Buy a cat ? He will sometimes leave the dead rat in the middle of the kitchen, but it's only to show you how efficient he is. And at least the rat meat isn't wasted.

Best thing about it is that the cat will scare the shit out of the rats and they'll go to settle somewhere else.

Rats can reproduce really fast so they may be reproducing faster than your trap kills them... Rats will simply see the traps deaths as accident - just like a rock could have fell on one of them - while the cat will bring the predator fear amongst the whole rat colony.

What are you scared of? That the rat might still be alive? Just wear gloves and pick it up if you're afraid of touching it. Or even just a garbage bag inside out.
How does it feel knowing you wasted another 3 seconds of your life reading this again?

Well said!

I guess I have rats somewhere in the attic too, gnawing on my old computers. It's easy to get rid of them though, I just have to release the most fear-inducing beast of the modern era to deal with them:

Yeah having rats and mice suck. One moved into my bedroom a few months ago (my ex was a fucking slob :< ) and for a while I thought it was cute. Then I caught it chewing on my computer cables.

borrowed my sisters cat for two weeks. haven't seen the mouse since. Wonder what happened to it?

hum from reading so much "i can't touch this omg" - do you actually just pick them up with your bare hands? you should 2000% avoid that because these animals can be filled with all kinds of unhealthy stuff.

Either use some kind of gloves, or even better (because cheap and can just be dumped along with them) just use one or two pieces of kitchen paper, fold them up a little and then just use these to grab that stuff. Grab the trap at the side where there's no rat in it and pull it open (can be hard to do when not using bare fingers, so i'd probably just use my fingers for that at some section where there's no rat) and then just use a kitchen paper to take the rat away.

Op, you made me smile. I used to have a stupid neighbor that kept goats and pigs in his back yard, and when he was forced to get rid of them for stinking up the entire neighborhood, all the rats and mice that lived on the animal feed had to find a new home(and source of food). Enter rat infestation. I could go out to my shed out in the back yard with my pellet gun and shoot a rat or two every time I went out for for at least a month. They chewed wires, tore open bags of potato chips, chewed open jars of peanut butter, chewed holes in the walls, etc. It was seriously rat hell for a month straight. I remember going out back with a BB gun, and massacring an entire family of rats(mom and about 8 babies) in about 60 seconds, because I shot the mom first and young 'uns didn't know to scatter. They just hopped around doing whatever while I sat about 30 feet away and shot them all. I would set traps too, and would catch them in them every couple of days as well. The rats also learned how to take food off the trap without setting it off, so I would have to put the traps out with food on them, but unset, so the rats would get accustomed to not paying attention to them any more, and then I would set them one night and get a motherload. As seen here. AHHHH the things you learn to outwit the furry little bastards. For instance, setting multiple traps all facing inwards. You see, rats have tails, and they would set traps off with their tails while they were paying attention to another trap, and while flailing around, would usually get the death blow from flopping into another trap.

TLDR: Op, I kind of feel sorry for you....but not really. MAN UP. THEY'RE JUST LITTLE FURRY RODENTS.

One would assume the gloves he is wearing in the picture is not for climbing the ladder.

Man just get one of them rat trap cages that work only one way for rats to enter then you can just take em in a cage in the morning without freaking out knowing theyre in a cage. We used to have a massive rat problem in the philippines one night of a rage cage with some bait my parents put in and pretty much the cage was stuffed filled by morning and i mean full..

Not to be "that guy", but those are mice, not rats. Rats are fucking huge compared to mice. I work with mice in a research setting and even then I still freak out whenever I see mice in my apartment. 10 day old mice are so cute though :D

I've only disposed of a few rats. We used some big metal door trap, about the size of shoebox, so it wasn't as intimate. On the whole it was definitely gross for sanitary reasons, but not nearly as I-don't-want-to-touch-this as roadkill. Mice in particular I regularly see dead and savaged on the trail I run. As opposed to trapped mice, ones in the wild tend to have gaping, red, festering wounds which make them all the more unapproachable.

They look more like mice, we have them in our house. Kind of get used to it. actually the best mouse trap I've ever seen (could catch like 15-20 in a night) that being if you REALLY have mouse problems, Bucket --> ramp leading up to bucket --> Soda can suspended above bucket --> penut butter on can ---> water in bucket. they'll leap for the can, can spins, they fall.

My old place was fortunate enough to have a ton of random wild cats (yes, wild, and that place was attached to a large park) so I never had any rats in the house. I did however on rare occassions find dead rats in the backyard. Shrug, put on gloves, grab a plastic bag, grab the dead rat, and toss. Not that hard yo!

I did once though, beat a live rat to death with a baseball bat - at my friends place, in front of the driveway. He had 3 younger brothers who were probably elementary/middle school at the time. Needless to say, I was the hero that day.

Ugh, last night as I was making something to eat for dinner there was a mouse running across the floor. Luckily I have a barn cat in the house and it's been crouched down there for the last 5~ hours. Not as bad as rats but still t.t good luck!

Thanks for sharing all the rat stories, it's helping me build more courage to realize that it's just a dead rat and there is nothing to freak out about.

Also, who voted my blog with 1 star? Is it because you don't like rats? I posted pictures!!

Rats and mice are okay, roach infestations are worse.

edit: Need to unleash total chemical warfare to have any chance to get rid of them, especially the small buggers! Damn those pests and hoarders in my family!
