Well, my early apps are all due in a little over a week. It's hard to believe that this time is finally here. It's funny to look back and think about how it seemed so far away, and in the last month everything has closed in on me - this part of my life is almost over, good bye high school. I'm really worried because I am not independent at all. I honestly don't know what I'm going to do without my mommy LOL. I'm so scared; I'll admit that thinking about leaving home makes me want to cry sometimes. T_____T

Applying to colleges is almost like a dream for me, it feels like I'm not actually doing it for myself because it's so hard to imagine that at this time next year... I'll be gone X_x. My stats aren't the most amazing ever, but I have what I believe to be a unique essay topic for the common app (PM me if you want to know lol), and I've been in a magnet program for all of high school. I think that's what really made me care about getting into a good school - I've been surrounded by some of the most amazing and smartest people I'll ever meet and I want to continue to experience that.

I'm applying early to 3 schools - Columbia, Caltech, and my state school. Columbia is my #1 choice, I want to study Applied Math somewhere and I'm not really interested in science so I think the opportunities there in finance would be really great. PLUS NYC IS AMAZING. Caltech is somewhere I have always considered - I like warm weather, but I heard that the people there aren't very attractive . My state school... please please don't let me end up here T_T. I love my friends and I'm pretty sure this is where most of them will end up, but I know them all now! I want to meet new people. I also want to gtfo of here LOL

This is my 1111th post, so make a wish! I know what I'm wishing for zzzz. Good luck to everyone else applying to college, and I hope you get into your dream schools!

Bonus Jiyeon
[image loading]

EDIT: JUST TO CLARIFY I AM ALSO APPLYING TO LIKE 8 SCHOOLS REGULAR . Rice, Princeton, CMU, Cornell, NYU, Haverford, Swarthmore, and St Mary's College of Maryland. Don't ask about those last 3 my mommy is making me apply and I am going along with it so she doesn't annoy me.

They assume you'll be making mad engineering salaries at Silicon Valley and such in the future. PCC is a community college, so you'll have an inherent advantage there.
Thank God and gunrun.

You aren't surrounded by some of the smartest people you'll ever meet. Seriously. When you hit university, you'll be meeting many, many more ridiculously smart kids that make your old friends look dumb.

Apply to more schools. It's always good to apply to a bunch of schools even if you don't want to go there. You won't know how you feel in a month, or two months.

Don't worry about girls, if you're good, then they'll come to you. And if you're not, then you wouldn't get them anyways. And don't worry about people or attractiveness, there are always ugly people, and pretty people. Also, who knows, some of your best friends can be ugly, so stop being so shallow.

If you're going to talk about ugly and good looking people, a picture of yourself should really be necessary. Seriously.

Make sure your "unique" essay topic isn't very silly. Not to you, but to others. Talk with friendly high school teachers about it. There were a bunch of good comments in another thread a while back about application essay topics.

Finally, living away from home is amazing and terrible at the same time. But it's really something everyone needs to try at some point. It's kind of life changing... also, cliche, but everyone else there is in exactly the same position as you, so don't worry so much.

Also, be yourself and let your personality show through your essay, and to others when you make it into university. If you don't like some people, you don't have to hang out with them. Don't be fake just so you can. There are many people to make friends with. Don't get stuck over a couple.
There is no one like you in the universe.

Just these 3 early ones due next week xD. Many more to come in January T_T. Good luck on Columbia, I'm applying to NYU too because I love New York so much!

I don't know, someone who was in my program who went to UChicago said that the people he went to high school with were all some of the smartest people he'd ever meet, so that where I got it from. I don't think I can get much better than someone of the US Physics Olympiad team and someone who went to the US Math Olympiad training camp, but we'll see! I'm definitely applying to more than 3 schools, these are just the ones I'm doing early - very few schools actually do EA =/.
I'm not being shallow, I was just making a joke about Caltech that a lot of people make (a lot of people who go there say this too), I don't see why you needed to be so hostile about it. I'm not saying I'm the most attractive person ever and I will only date beautiful people because I deserve to, and if you really think I should provide a picture of myself then ok, go to my profile and click on one of the links there, I have pictures of myself. I've showed a lot of high school English teachers my essay and also my peers, and they all like it. I have to give props to my current English teacher, she gave me a lot of suggestions that really improved my essay and helped it show more of my personality. I believe I'm taking this process pretty seriously, and I'm not going to let myself submit an essay that multiple people haven't looked at.

At least it sounds like you're not procrastinating. I filled out all the easy shit early (name, DOB, etc.) and then wrote 4 essays in a day, lol.
edit- also agree with the advice to apply to more different schools. I applied to large schools pretty much exclusively and later semi-regretted not at least giving myself the option to attend a smaller one. You never know what can happen in a few months. Also don't worry about the independence thing. It's a lot less scary and a lot more fun than you think. I know people who were homesick as fuck the first couple weeks and they're having a shitton of fun now.

If you want to do applied math, the choices are fairly simple:

Princeton, ***NYU***, Cornell. Columbia is probably OK due to its geographical position, but I am not 100% sure. My impression is that NYU > Columbia when it comes to applied math. Whether or not you will like NYU is another story.... it's in downtown, and it's kind of a craphole comparing to Columbia from its looks and feel.

Which state are you in?

So you want applied maths with opportunities in finance?

... why not Princeton?

That's literally on our resume. Virtually everyone I know here who wants to get into finance has little difficulty, even now in this crappy environment, finding a solid job. Plus our math here is insanity. Telling you, if you're really serious about your interests, apply to more places and consider more options. And you'll most definitely be surrounded by people much smarter than yourself.

edit:

Not gonna lie, Columbia's neighborhoods are pretty sketch. At least NYU is virtually in the heart of the most fun parts of Manhattan, where everyone is in their 20's.

I disagree. I visited both schools; I felt that Columbia has an incredible campus. NYU is just a bunch of buildings in downtown.

Good luck! I'm applying this year, also. The most stressful part of this for me will be choosing where to go, though. My parents have told me that they will only support me through my first four years in school, but just a bit ago I found out that some schools are offering full rides to people who did well on the PSAT. So, since I do want to go through grad school if I can, I could go to the best school I can and take out a loan for grad school, go through my four years and be done with it, or go to a lesser-known school for free and have my parents pay for grad school. I think if I don't get into my first choice I might seriously consider going somewhere offering me a full ride if I think it wouldn't be putting myself at too much of a disadvantage. (Besides, people say that your grad school matters much more than your undergrad school, right?) Decisions decisions :S
