California is #1. Besides just choosing the "school" you want to go to, you have to consider other factors. It's not all about the "education" because education is offered everywhere. It's more about the enviroment, and the people. Here's why unichan, you need to consider California as your #1 choice. Any school from California.

California has the best weather in the country. 330/365 good days of sunny weather is impossible to beat. Nothing ever beats seeing cute girls in short shorts every day of the year. For you, I guess this is equivalent to seeing hot guys at the beach with their shirt off, or guys showing lots of skin with their muscles. Like seriously wtf, all these people working out hardcore and getting dem muscles and six packs. Lots of wannabe actors are available waiting for you unichan!

California has the most azns in the country. We know you love dem azns unichan. California has many many azns, azns from all the azn countries out there, like the chinese, koreans, japanese, bangladesh people. One good thing about many azns is that you can eat authentic chinese food that you love in chinatown, or japanese food at little tokyo and get a sense of the different cultures, and experience many different experiences. In places like the east, you only get white people stuff which you can get anywhere. Then there's the issue of your hubby. We all know azn parents want azn hubbies, not black hubbies or blue teletubbies or the green and purple one. If you don't like azns but mexicans, we have a lot of them too. California is very diverse in its cultures and people that live here. I like to think that that is a good thing.

Lots of fun events you can go to in California. In places like the east, you don't get a lot of blizzcons, those anime conventions, Riot games, or MLG anaheim. Once you come to california, you can go to whatever convention you feel like going to, to meet the people you've met online or just meet new people who share similar interests. There's also a lot of kpop concerts that happen in California every year, like that one Korean one and SMTown which happens every year. There's also a lot of non azn artists that perform many concerts in california.

There were many more reasons why California is the best, but this is taking me too long to type.

The fuck? We got comicon, MLG providence, all the big companies in everything, Kpop concerts, etc etc etc.

I'm a Californian (Bay Area) and I find everything to be a lot more accessible in NY. Everything is super close, and you dont have to drive 4-5 hrs just to get from SF to LA.

The one thing we dont have is Blizzcon fuuuuu

So you want applied maths with opportunities in finance?

... why not Princeton?

That's literally on our resume. Virtually everyone I know here who wants to get into finance has little difficulty, even now in this crappy environment, finding a solid job. Plus our math here is insanity. Telling you, if you're really serious about your interests, apply to more places and consider more options. And you'll most definitely be surrounded by people much smarter than yourself.

Whether or not you will like NYU is another story.... it's in downtown, and it's kind of a craphole comparing to Columbia from its looks and feel.

Which state are you in?

Columbia is in much more of a craphole than NYU lol.

Not gonna lie, Columbia's neighborhoods are pretty sketch. At least NYU is virtually in the heart of the most fun parts of Manhattan, where everyone is in their 20's.

I'm applying to Princeton too, but it was REA and I wanted to apply to Caltech also.

Like I said above, I am applying to all three of those, just not early. I visited both and I liked both! I love the small campus feeling of Columbia, and I thought I would hate NYU, but I actually really liked it.

Good luck! I'm applying this year, also. The most stressful part of this for me will be choosing where to go, though. My parents have told me that they will only support me through my first four years in school, but just a bit ago I found out that some schools are offering full rides to people who did well on the PSAT. So, since I do want to go through grad school if I can, I could go to the best school I can and take out a loan for grad school, go through my four years and be done with it, or go to a lesser-known school for free and have my parents pay for grad school. I think if I don't get into my first choice I might seriously consider going somewhere offering me a full ride if I think it wouldn't be putting myself at too much of a disadvantage. (Besides, people say that your grad school matters much more than your undergrad school, right?) Decisions decisions :S

My parents make a lot of money so going the full ride route isn't something I've been considering, but I've been getting a lot of letters from colleges about it. Like Auburn, all of the National Merit semifinalists here got this huge ass envelope LOL

I heard that schools consider if you can't pay for their school, you don't have to go even if you applied ED. Fuck that sentence had shitty grammar but hopefully you get my point LOL. Anyways I don't know too much about that, but definitely good luck on all of your schools!

For jobs, grad school matters much more than your undergrad.

Yet undergrad is the most important aspect when applying to grad school.

So in essence (and I'm not trying to put you down), they're both important, though I'd say that undergrad is more important because it will be difficult to get into a top grad school if you're not from a top undergrad.

zzzz you guys are too cold. Too much snow and rain and stuff. Also, there is a safety issue after 9/11. California has top men on the job protecting our state.(*coughyeahrightcough*) The 4-5 hour drive=ROADTRIP!!!!!!! Fun times. No, the long drives to go to places are kind of a pain in the ass. But who cares about SF or SD. All you need is LA and chinatown.

I thought you wanted to go to Harvard. That's not in California!
Maybe I'll apply to Stanford too, my mommy won't let me apply to any of the UCs because she says no out of states schools. No I don't get it either but whatever. Also I heard that Cali has lots of hot guys I watched The Hills and the guys on there looked great. But I watched The City too with Whitney Port and the guys there looked great too. Except on both shows there was a ratty nasty long haired dude who looks like he doesn't shower. You're right though guys in Cali work out more and it's hot so they all have their shirts off.
Oh yeah maybe I'll apply to FIDM, like Lauren Conrad, or CU, like Naomi from 90210!

I'm applying early to Harvey Mudd... I really need to start working on my essays. I'm doing the supplemental stuff, and they ask why you want to apply. I was tempted to say because Day9 went there and endorsed it, but I don't think that would go over very well

whichever school you end up going to, just remember this. college is your bridge between your K-12 years at home, and the real world. how you spend your 4 years at college will greatly affect your placement in the socioeconomic landscape of life. it's no longer going to be strictly what you know, but who you know that will take you places after college. your college years will be the best 4 years of your life so make the most of it! don't let homesickness get the best of you! my advice would be to take the remaining time you have to level up your emotional maturity as much as you can before you leave for college. and, if you don't end up going to your 1st choice UG, there's always grad school, so do your best in UG! oh, that reminds me of grades in UG. your first two semesters will probably be the easiest, so make sure you do your best to get good grades. start building your cushion your first year, so in the case that your GPA falls in future years, your overall GPA might not be affected so much. i'm sure your used to getting straight A's in high school, but depending on your major, that is very rare in college. i'm not saying you should lower your standards, but be aware that it's not the end of the world if you get a B. just don't get Cs or anything below that. the minimum GPA for most jobs and grad schools is a 3.0, and i'd say anything above a 3.5 is very competitive.

EDIT: oh, another thing about finance since you mentioned it. it's a rule of thumb that most companies recruit strictly from the ivies, standford, and MIT, Caltech will also get your foot in a lot of doors. most engineering students at columbia end up in finance or consulting, so if finance is really your thing, you can't go wrong with columbia. have you looked into the financial engineering program at columbia? they started their first year when i was a senior, and i heard it was a straight path to goldman sachs, DE shaw, and other top companies. haha sorry if i sound like i'm plugging columbia but i went to the engineering school for UG.

I'm applying early to Harvey Mudd... I really need to start working on my essays. I'm doing the supplemental stuff, and they ask why you want to apply. I was tempted to say because Day9 went there and endorsed it, but I don't think that would go over very well

You can still do that, but instead, spin it in a way about how you heard day9 describe harvey mudd in a favorable light, and why that appeals to you. I remember (probably on a daily) him describing how he was really happy to be surrounded with other science/engineering oriented people whom he could communicate with. There is nothing wrong with putting that in an essay (you'd probably want to find that daily though).

If you want to do applied math, the choices are fairly simple:

Princeton, ***NYU***, Cornell. Columbia is probably OK due to its geographical position, but I am not 100% sure. My expression is that NYU > Columbia when it comes to applied math. Whether or not you will like NYU is another story.... it's in downtown, and it's kind of a craphole comparing to Columbia from its looks and feel.

Which state are you in?

Columbia is in much more of a craphole than NYU lol.

I disagree. I visited both schools; I felt that Columbia has an incredible campus. NYU is just a bunch of buildings in downtown.

Columbia is also in a terrible neighborhood, and takes you 45minutes to get anywhere by subway.

NYU doesn't have a campus but campuses are overrated anyways. NYU is actually close to stuff.

I went to London School of Economics which is also just a bunch of buildings in the middle of London, and it was a pretty good experience. Sure I wish I'd had some of those typical college sitting-on-grassy-field-picnicking moments but being in a big city means all the fun stuff is right there. And expensive, too.

Oh, and I'm applying for Mfin and MFE stuff, so I'll be cramming those essays much the same way as you younglings. ^_^

Caltech is somewhere I have always considered - I like warm weather, but I heard that the people there aren't very attractive . My state school... please please don't let me end up here T_T. I love my friends and I'm pretty sure this is where most of them will end up, but I know them all now! I want to meet new people. I also want to gtfo of here LOL

This is my 1111th post, so make a wish! I know what I'm wishing for zzzz. Good luck to everyone else applying to college, and I hope you get into your dream schools!

You sound as if Caltech is your backup school. How naive you are. Tsk Tsk Tsk. You'll discover that CalTech is harder to get into than Columbia
