i think it's just residual powder from the manufacturing. should be ok, but you can blast most of it off with compressed air.

As for maintenence, all you have to remember is to not let the resin build up on the instrument and to loosen your bow everytime you put it away. Occasional polish. Other than that and not letting dents and kinks get in it, maintaining it is pretty easy.

Though I don't play it, I sometimes get residue from steel strings on my guitar and from the fingerboard on poorly maintained guitars that I have tried. Being brand new it sounds weird that the board would give off color, but then again it could be quite different from a guitar in that respect. Anyway for maintainence if you are responsible for storing it and/or bringing it home, store it in a not too moist environment, avoid temperature changes and be sure to treat the neck with some oils whenever you can (restringing is an ample opportunity). I'm no expert, not even an amateur I guess, so I would just google cello maintainence. Best of luck on learning to become a great celloist! ![]()

Also, you lucky bastard. A school is lucky if they have 4+ student cellos that are functioning at all properly. Don't worry about legitimate maintenance since it's a school cello, except when it gets seriously bad. However, one of the MOST crucial things to do is check whenever you can the bridge to make SURE that a) it's NOT curved/at an angle not perpendicular to the body of the cello, and b) that it's aligned correctly with the sound post. Many a cello has been screwed over by people glossing over this.

Haha, my teacher apparently has been saving up money(or just stole the funds from his guitar class), we bought a lot of new instruments. But thanks for the help guys! Saved me a lot of worrying.

The black residue.......sounds a little worrisome to me, but it's new, so maybe some of the dye isn't set yet? Kind of wierd to me, I've never had that happen to me, but then, I've never had a brand new cello. And what other people have said. Clean the strings regularly, keep your bow loose when not playing, store it in as dry a place as possible, etc. For a random playing tip, especially as a beginner. Intonation is EVERYTHING with a fretless instrument, so "almost" is completely off. So when you practice, don't move on with a song, scale, etc until you can hit every note almost perfectly...at least perfectly enough that you can't hear any pitch problem. Don't be "that guy" who plays full blast horribly out of tune.

>< Seriously now, give that cello a nice character. The first years are truly important for the life of a new chord instrument. have fun!

no offense I just love poking fun at violas because they're just so easy to make fun of .. jokes aside, viola is a wonderful instrument too (just that wonderful viola players are rather few and far). Good Viola players just have so many more opportunities
