You have no idea how much crap I get when I first got to the U.S. In Singapore, I actually met a few visiting Americans and nobody was making fun of them in any way. In fact, our neighborhood (where I lived at, we always had neighbors who will always hang out at our coffee shop at the bottom of our flats) greeted him and was extremely friendly towards them. They told us they really appreciated our company, and it was because of us that he stayed in America another week.
What happened when I moved? The worst. I couldn't go a day without an idiot coming up and making fun of me and my brothers everywhere I went. They came up to us and said "ching chong ding dong" and all that crap to us and poked fun of us because we didn't look like them. These people told us to open our eyes and they mocked us.
Over time, I learn to deal with it. It was hard though, and only the 4 or 5 who actually respected me became my good friends.
I don't recommend moving to the U.S. Not one bit. At least not to Arkansas. It's horrendous what they say to foreigners here. Even at our local chinese restaurant, nobody was nice to the manager or the waiters there. I'm not saying the U.S. is rotten and everyone has no respect, I'm saying that lots of places have people like this living in it and it's setting a really good example of why people hate America.

In my 3 years at Uni I had give or take 3 lecturers that I couldn't hold a straight face while listening to, one has a very condescending Greek accent, one has a super Chinese accent, and one was a shrill elderly woman whose voice, or rather squeak, pretty much broke every other sentence.
I pretty much never went to those lectures after getting "tasters".

"Sibal" or "Ni Hao" are actually words in their respective languages. Sure, you might screw up the pronunciation but at least you're making an effort. "Ching Chong" is just trying to make fun of a language that sounds funny to your ears. It's total bullshit, hence why many Asians find it offensive.

If you were in a rural/semi-rural area, you were most likely in redneck country and would have probably never gotten any respect from them anyway. Lots of Americans are closet racists, whether against blacks, hispanics or asians; those who live in urban neighborhoods are the ones who are least likely to express their racism. It just comes with a lack of exposure to other cultures.

i think he meant more closely to making sounds to speak language than just speaking (which takes a lot of knowledge to do), which is really phonetics & phonology. but well most profs and teachers that teach phonetics have to know how to make nearly all the sounds they're teaching anyway so they cant be that heavily accented (hopefully)
