yo, so another blog, another problem, basically i really need to find a job! ;P so i'd like some tips on the best way to go about finding one. I'd like to list some i know and have tried and hopefully that helps others, and maybe someone else can provide more but first my situation!

so for the past 5 years of my life, ive taken 2 semesters off by mostly have been a college student (university of florida, now currently at Seminole state college) and have lived off financial aid and on the side jobs (such as coaching war3, and starcraft 2, and some webdesign things) but atm i really haven't been making enough money to sustain my self due to a run of bad luck in paper work and i had to wait 3 weeks after this current semester started to defer my payments with financial aid. Since i didn't have the money out of pocket to pay for my classes, i had to take this semester off, thus removing about 1500$ for the semester from my food/gas budget (all of it lol)

since i want to work in a healthy environment (not fast food, or near lethal chemicals such as fertilizer) i went to search for a job. Ive had jobs before in things such as dispatching and maintainability for a pet shop. But nothing else really.

I went though different types of companies that do job placement but see'ing as i have less than 1 year work experience, and all of my experience was from 4+ years ago i had a hard job finding anything entry level with no experience required. Things like driving jobs, working for moving companies, and retail stores were high on my list, and ive gone though any i can come up with to apply. Most stores i try to apply in person but they just direct you to their web site (ive never been called back by applying online...) so i continued to try to find smaller companies that would allow in person interviews to get hired.

so tl.net any ideas? suggestions? maybe a tl'er in the central florida area might be able to hire? i'm looking for a full time position for atleast the next two years, since i plan to finish my schooling in the area (i take care of my mother as well, who's disabled and unable to work) so leaving the area to far isnt possible (with in an hour or so drive)

thanks in advance for any advice.

I'm a student who was just suspended from school for low grades (thanks starcraft)... so I needed to find a full time job that pays well enough to live on.

I've always gravitated towards technical support jobs. Right now i'm making like $15 an hour doing tech support for a small company, with some web development for them when the time is slow.

I had a job once at verizon wireless doing tech support, making like $14.50 an hour.

The point is, you can make an income you can live off of doing tech support jobs. Seeing as you've said you've already done web development on the side, there's no doubt your smarter than 90% of the general population when it comes to technology.

Just find a company that has a tech support position, go in there and ace the interview, and your golden.

edit - I got that verizon job with little to no experience besides working at burger king, and they hired me knowing that. They sent me to a 2 week training "bootcamp", and then right into the store.

edit edit - check out https://flextronics.hua.hrsmart.com/ats/js_job_details.php?reqid=53979

Flextonics is contracted by Verizon Wireless and AT&T I think to do tech support in-store for them. Not sure if this is anywhere near you, but they were a great company to work for, and I got experience there that I used to get my current job.

i'm certainly going to look into technical support, but here is a question i have, has anyone else found it infuriating that they put 0-2 years experience, but then add

"One year of customer service and/or retail experience. " in the middle of the description? I have no job experience in the past 5 years, and before that was only 6 months doing dispatching and maintenance (cleaning) so completely unrelated to almost everything besides taking phone calls.

but ya thanks for the tip, i'm gonna try looking into that avenue right now, but keep the suggestions coming! any other types of jobs that I or anyone in a similar situation should look into? I really wish there was job placement for students, or government placement agencies that would help you find a job and not just ask you to submit an online resume and hope for a phone call.

Sometimes experiences stated as a requirement are actually not really required, but rather preferred. If you believe that you are qualified for the position, you should apply, regardless of whether or not you 'tick' all the required boxes. Especially for entrance positions, skills and potential is worth much more to an employer than your work experience from that random job in your past.

Get a loan and go back to school and just finish. Dropping out because you can't afford to pay out of pocket is dumb as hell.

You will take forever to go through school like this (and the constant go to school/take semester off doesn't look too hot either on your resume). It delays you getting a degree, which delays you from getting a real job that will pay a livable salary. The job market blows right now for people with a degree, much less people with only a high school education.

and call them, don't wait for a call back

i didnt mean i was dropping out of school, problem with me atm is that i have more credits than necessarily for an AA, since i switched majors, this means i have to fill out a form saying why im still going for an AA with how ever many credits. they got back logged and weren't able to finish the forms for this to deliver financial aid for the 2nd term of summer. so they had to delay doing these specific forms for fall semester, mine is in that pile, and no amount of me or many others talking to them made it go any faster, i did indeed get my financial aid 3 weeks later, but thats to late to register for classes as they already started, more or less anyone with out that 2k+ banked and ready to pay got shafted(just a shift community college sigh). taking out a loan for me is a scary thing to do, and ive never considered it before, ive always made enough with out a fulltime job to live on just off side work and financial aid, this is the first semester where i didnt have adaquet savings, and had to lose out on my pel grant.

You've taken two semesters off already and you're about to do a third just to get an AA after five years. That's not good, whether it was because of financial situation or you wanted time off. You're still doing the same as I said before in delaying getting a real job with livable pay.

you might be able to reg late, so you should look into that. But beyond that, just do a loan in the future to make up whatever you pel doesn't cover, because it's insane to have your education dependent on you covering on your own without a real ft job (and even if you had a FT one, it wouldn't pay well enough to make that an intelligent decision). And if it's taking you five years for an AA, it's pretty apparent you need to focus more on school, not add more distractions with work.

well i stopped 1 semester short of my other AA in education to presue one in engineering, very few credits transfered besides the math and english, i had to move back home from univerity of florida to help with my grandmother/mother

anyways not gonna bother defending my self, i know its been 5 years and i still havnt gotten my degree finished, and i know its taking a long time, next semester my financial aid is fine, so i shouldnt have any more issues as its my last semester before i transfer to UCF, but i need a job at this point not only for this semester, but also to pay for living expenses once i move to university.

thanks for the advice though, its good advice im sure, a loan of 4k to go to school a semester so u graduate a semester earlier will easily pay for its self once u get a job out of school.

unfortunately in this economy getting a job out of college isn't a guarantee... in fact there a very few majors left that actually have good employment rates after graduation.. just saying you shouldn't count on getting a job right after you graduate.. unless you go for like accounting or something..

I'm in your situation as well. I'm 22. I have an AA, and I'm a semester away from an AS. I work two jobs, but I'm looking for something more permanent (help pay for school etc)

I was just in an argument with my mother over the entire situation. Good luck finding a job in FL :/ it sucks here. Just keep trying.

If you apply online, you have to call in and inquire about your online application. Most if not all places that do online hiring will not even consider your application unless you phone in as it shows you are actually a person and interested.

Also, what is your major in college? If you say english, poli sci, history, etc. then there's your problem. Those are not marketable skills so really no one wants you.

Except all engineering related majors you are guaranteed a high paying job right out of college. Hell, I have opportunities lining up for internships as a Senior computer engineer (I already have one though).
