Ok, we all know it's a great game, no doubt! It demands a lot of skill to be really good and you can't beat a pro with just pure luck. SC2 fits for everyone, young and old and you don't even have to play it by yourself to enjoy it. Just spectating the games can be very entertaining. These things make the game good, but what makes it special? I like how Jeffrey Alejos said it on the SonsOfStarcraft: "It is a top down game that spawned a bottom up society, where the stars are the fans and the fans are the stars." The stars are truly the biggest fans. They spent most of the time with the game and in the game. But the real stars are the true fans, that follow and support their favourite players. Mimic their plays, spectate and cheer, support and live through their idols. But still, it's not the pros and fans who makes this so special - it's you!

Since the SC2 community is so huge there are bigger variety of people and persons. The two sides of the coin can be easely seen. If we put all the all-knowing insecure brats that are still searhing themselves, all the trolls and E-penis boosters aside there are so many great people who are working to make this community even better. Ofcourse community this big have bigger stars, those great nerdballers, who bravely guides us and spreads the word of Esports. Thank you day9, Artosis and Tasteless just to name a few. But you don't have to be huge nerdballer to make SC2 so special! It's even more important what happens on the lower levels of the community. How to get more and more new players to be interested about the game. How players treat each others. Ofcourse there are competition and large emotions involved but still, you can always try to give something back. So far SC2 community have exceeded all my expectations.

I red somewhere that there are about 150 people working with the site TeamLiquid volunteerly and free of charge. That is just awesome! Because of that we have a great SC2 site that connect us, help us and feed us. There are so many great players that stream night after night their games and try to tell what are they doing and why. They want to help their fans to become better gamers and understand the game more. So many active players who write their own blogs and help each others out, people who want to casts games and people who create content to different sites. There are even players who give lessons for free, teach, advice and help other players to improve. There are people who want to make documentaries about the people close to SC2 and spread the word. The SC2 community even collected the pledge of $18,400 to make Sons Of Starcraft happen in only one night! How amazing is that! You can do so much around SC2!

I have to say special thanks to TeamLiquid forums and a guy called Basagu / Carapace. He just happened to read some of my first blog posts and offered to give me some tips for Protoss play. How great is that. I have just started playing and yet there is this platinum protoss willing to give me tips and show some tricks. Although I'm almost twice at his age, we get along just great. I'm very grateful for all the advises and time he has given me. I'm sure Basagu will make a great SC2 mentor and coach one day if that's what he wants to! It's all about you and how you approach things. You tend to get what you ask for.

But what makes SC2 and it's community to feel so much better and special than the others?

I'd have to say those people who are willing to do something to improve the community, those who are giving something back, you are the reason what makes SC2 so special. I'm overwhelmed how many of you are out there!! Thank you so much for your work and please continue doing that. It's great! SC2 is definitely the crown of ESPORTS in my eyes!

You can read my whole post from my blog: http://sc2.nautti.fi/?p=155

Cheers,
nautti

PS. What makes SC2 so special for you? Have you got some exceptional help from a surprising level or have you give a helping hand to a new comer who needed it? What is the thing that have given you the biggest smile in here?

The best thing about Starcraft is losing to a build, then developing a counter strat and never losing to it again.

i´m no veteran poster myself, but i´d try contributing more to TL before making a "read the whole post from my blog" blog. This way it looks like 99% self promotion, 1% contribution.

wait. did the op like come to your home and forced you to read the whole post at gun point? and i don't see correlation between a quality post and a user's post count, please elaborate.

Usually people with higher post counts, dont post complete trash and thus they've been around for a while. Some of them better posters than others obviously.

On the OP: I guess because its .. Broodwars sequel or something? I dunno i've never thought of it as "special" before

You do realize that he was just describing the how he felt about the community and the game, and that he was wondering what made it special for us, right? No need to bash him...

Anyway, what makes the game special to me is the vast amount of skill needed to play it and the great community. Also, this is the first and only game I've ever watched streams and tournaments for, which makes it unique and special to me.

Those moments when you win, when the puzzle gets solved and you end up as a the sole winner. Most of the time Starcraft 2 seems and dull, but if I just win that one game where I was behind the whole game and somehow won. Man... Sure feels great :D

Also you seem like a douche coming to someones blog only to diss it :/

StarCraft is special because you spend a half hour sitting in a chair to decide the result of a ten second long battle.

Also, don't advertise your shit on TL.
I hate when people compare SC2 and rochambeu. One race isn't fucking supposed to counter another one. | Protoss isn't OP. Their units on the other hand....

I've gotta agree; if it weren't for the name, it'd probably end up as just another failed RTS game.

Not failed, necessarily. It probably would have sold well, had a small competitive scene, and some sort of fan base. However, anyone who thinks that all this esports business couldn't have happened without the legacy of Broodwar is deluding themselves.

Well, yeah. There are a lot of really great games out there, with really strong competitive scenes, which are confined to a small dedicated fanbase because of their lack of mass appeal. But I don't think anyone expected before beta that competitive SC2 would end up this big internationally.

Wow, that is actually the only and perfect answer to the question in OP. I think there is nothing to add to this. Maybe just....money.
Brood War is the best RTS that has ever been created.

Have to agree. Without bw's legacy there would be nothing. No day[9], no tasteless or artosis, no countless tournies during beta, no money being blindly thrown into "Esports"... There would be no Nesteas, no MVPs, no MCs to look up to. No "Starleagues", no gomtv, no teamliquid... Sometimes I feel like many people here don't appreciate that. Even the "SC2 community" is just an amalgam of other RTS communities with a few new randoms sprinkled in. SC2 is not responsible for any of this. The vast majority of SC2 strategy and gameplay mechanics are a mere subset of the real Starcraft. One day I hope people will get a grip and realize that an inferior game came along and nudged a masterpiece into obscurity.

Uh oh, I've gone off on a rant.

The game itself is terrible, but what makes it special is the community that it inherited from Brood War. Blizzard may have done a bad job, but there are so many people who trying hard to make this work as an esport.

its in the name and the fact that it is Blizzard(which has to do with the nanme I guess) if not it would be written off as a decent game like Dawn of War or supreme commander but really nothing special.

Well i do realize that but if if all comes to sharing the love and whatnot, why couldn´t he share the "whole post" with the community in the TL-blog itself ? I´m sorry if i sound like a douche, the text looks legit, it just doesn´t chime well with the "read the rest at www.lookatme.com" at the end.

This is the truest thing I have heard on this site so far. SC 2 stands so high in this world because it stands on the shoulders of giants, just like how the highest rock in this world is sitting on top of Mt. Everest. Gotta give credit to where it's due: to the greatest game in history, SCBW. Cheers.

Well the season 3 player count compared to season 2 and 1 state the exact opposite. The competitive scene and the viewer base may be growing, but the majority of the actual player base (from bronze to masters) is shrinking.

As much as I kind of feel like people are hasty to agree with Rekrul, I have to look like a hypocrite now and say he's pretty much right, It's all about the BW legacy and what was transferred over. In short, it was BW that succeeded, not SC2.

This. Basically an elaboration of Rekrul's post. It's so sad seeing all the hard work put into making BW an esport being thrown away because of sc2.. Even boxer abandoned BW. Shameful selling out imo.

And Rekrul just bent the OP's intent in half like it was nothing. Kudos~

It's like SC2 is the crown jewel and BW is the actual crown.
I wonder how many people would rage if the teamliquid logo turned into "teamliquid: Starcraft II Progaming News - Community - Team"?
