I've been running a lot lately and thought I'd drop a little blog update.
I started running a little while back, mostly encouraged by my 16 year old sister, who loves running from some random reason. I was pretty horrible at first, and ran my first ever 5k in a little over 24 minutes. Well, I read up on some stuff, and we started upping our mileage a bit, to about 5 miles at a time a couple times a week. My uncle gave me an older GPS watch a couple weeks ago as well, and so I'm trying to get used to all that information, and how to use it.
This past Saturday, 9/10/11, there was a random 5k that me and my sister entered. I wanted to get a time of at least 22:00, but like a n00b, I forgot my GPS.....time to guesstimate like a bau5. I started out way too fast, plus I didn't warm up, so about mile 2, I was feeling it pretty bad. I survived to around mile 3, and then turned the last corner, and saw the 3 mile sign and the time......21:29....and counting.....and then the finish line....so far away. Instantly all tiredness left me, and I started running as fast as i could. I passed up 2 people on the last stretch, and crossed the mat with the exact time of 22:00, at a dead sprint. My sister, despite being almost a foot shorter than me, managed to finished only a second behind me. After we cooled down, we went and looked at the standings, and apparently, this not being a huge race, only a couple hundred people, that was good enough for 3rd best in my age group for me, and my sister got 3rd place female overall. So I was pretty happy.
My goofy self and my sister with our little plaques.
Next up, more training and going to try and get 20:00 next race.
Edit: Some official pictures of the event. http://www.flickr.com/photos/etrc/sets/72157627639335690/

Gratulations to your accomplishment. As someone who played football all his life simple running is the bane of my existence. Every training in the summer we had to run through forests and shit. I never felt motivated to just go jogging or run in a competition like you. I dont't move, unless there is a ball involved.

Grats, man. Running is awesome.
|
Running would be my favorite sport after rowing of course.
|
Congrats! Running sucks though, but i'm still running at least 3 times a week. I just can't enjoy it.. -_-
|
Awesome man! Hope you keep improving. And damn closing in 31 seconds for the last 172 meters(3 mile to 5k) is pretty quick.

I used to hate it back when I was out of shape, but now that I can run 5 miles or so at a decent pace without gasping for air or feeling like my legs are going to fall off, I feel great after a good run.

It was lol. I've never closed a 5k that fast ever. But I'm 6' 3" with longish legs proportionally too, so it's probably not that amazing. Plus the adrenaline rush kicked in, and everyone at the finish line started cheering for me and such, so I don't even think I knew how fast I was going. It seems kind of fast to me too though, maybe the 3 mile marker was a little off or something.
Edit: Well Usain Bolt can run 200 meters in 19 seconds, so maybe the distance was right. I dunno. I distinctly remember the time as I hit the 3 mile marker.

Keep it up Running is such a rewarding athletic activity. If you're still in high school you should definitely go out for track or XC, they're generally pretty good about getting you in shape (at least my team was) if you want to put in the effort, plus its a good way to hang out with some friends while exercising.
I've been running competitively and for myself since I was 6. It's been a pretty defining theme in my life.
