It's kinda my daily blog now Well, I love to share and talk about music, so why not to use 30min of my spare time to post

Today I want to write something about funk. Not only the US funk, but I want to travel around the world - Africa, east and west Europe, maybe something from Asia as well. I mean, why not - You have to try everything!

A lil' bit of history

Wikipedia describes funk as
a music genre that originated in the mid-late 1960s when African American musicians blended soul music, jazz and R&B into a rhythmic, danceable new form of music. Funk de-emphasizes melody and harmony and brings a strong rhythmic groove of electric bass and drums to the foreground. Funk songs are often based on an extended vamp on a single chord, distinguishing it from R&B and soul songs, which are centered on chord progressions.

bla bla bla. Funk got soul, energy and groove. Got love and feelings. Got dance and vibes. That's why You have to funk Your life a little bit!

Everything started from Little Richard (after that he became a pastor, but that is a whole different story ;p) It was 1956.

+ Show Spoiler +

Performance of "Tutti Frutti" in the 1956 Alan Freed film "Don't Knock the Rock."

It was basically half rocknroll half funk, but that when all started. When Little Richard decided to became a pastor (He had to be an awesome pastor - I always see these speaches with praying and dancing and singing - he probably was perfect for that), his band disbanded and join the other genius, ladies and gentleman, Jaaaames Brown!

+ Show Spoiler +

James Brown - I feel good

That guy could learn You how to dance:

He is on fireee!

And those sicks tunes in his every track:
+ Show Spoiler +

James Brown - Papa's got a brand new bag

Then You got Parliament and Funkadelic - both children of George Clinton.

+ Show Spoiler +

Parliament Funkadelic - Bring The Funk

+ Show Spoiler +

George Clinton - Hey, Good Lookin'

Then we got the mid and late 70's with the awesome Kool and the Gang, Herbie Hancock, Donna Summer, Chaka Khan, Diana Ross, Barry White....
Disco started to be a major music genre as well, but that only helped funk.

+ Show Spoiler +

Chic - le freak

Herbie Hancock made on of the sickest funk/hh colaborations ever :

+ Show Spoiler +

Herbie Hancock - Rock It

In the 80's we had Prince. Funny fact : in 1983 James Brown on his own concert invited Prince and Michael Jackson on the stage. Micheal danced the hell out of them, Prince was so drunk he could not perform ;p
+ Show Spoiler +

Michael Jackson, Prince & James Brown 1983

But Prince was (still is, but not as much, in the golden era) an amazing artist.

+ Show Spoiler +

Prince - Purple Rain

Here are some best(my opinion) USA funk songs, random order:

+ Show Spoiler +

Lamont Dozier - Going To My Roots (1977)

+ Show Spoiler +

Isaac Hayes - Hung Up On My Baby

+ Show Spoiler +

Ramsey Lewis - Summer Breeze

+ Show Spoiler +

Curtis Mayfield - Pusherman

+ Show Spoiler +

Rick James - Mary Jane

+ Show Spoiler +

Linda Williams - Elevate Our Minds

But funk is not only in USA. To be honest, USA was first, but it is still just the small part of the whole thing.

I gonna start with my own country, Poland:

+ Show Spoiler +

Breakout - Listen To The Rhythm / Słuchaj Rytmu

+ Show Spoiler +

Arp Life - Bu-Bu - this is in my opinion one of the best bangers from the 70's.

+ Show Spoiler +

Henryk Debich - Bądź Wieczorem W Dyskotece (the title means: " be in the disco this evening" )

+ Show Spoiler +

Novi Singers - Torpedo

Some russian/soviet stuff:

+ Show Spoiler +

Raimonds Pauls - Japanase Dance Act

+ Show Spoiler +

Qaya

+ Show Spoiler +

Romance For Lovers OST (1974) Alexander Gradsky, George Garanian & The Melodia Ensemble

Did You know that Nigeria is the funkiest country in Africa?

+ Show Spoiler +

Raphael Amaraebe & His Peacocks Guitar Band ~ Awu Adada Mi / Sambosa Mama

+ Show Spoiler +

Peter King - African Dialects

Ghana is not far away man:

+ Show Spoiler +

Black Star Sound - Nite Safari

+ Show Spoiler +

Honny and The Bees Band - Psychedelic Woman

We can visit Asia:

+ Show Spoiler +

Tatsuro Yamashita - Love Talking

Im actually a little bit short on the asian funk (language barrier;/)...

Anyways, I could write about Jamiroquai and Red Hot Chilli Peppers and so on, but whyat for? Everyone knows them.

Im kinda tired after this post, I will finish later, couple more countries left

Have a nice day !

Oh my, this is wonderful, but at the same time so strange, because I REALLY LOVE Funk too, but most all of what you cited I wouldn't call it a 'Funk' sound at all :E (:

Three GREAT places for everyone to start, that I believe everyone should have are:

Rare Funk 80's Part IX Torrent Lol you should get all the parts!
): I can't find the second Torrent link, just look up "Funk Music" and you'll be blessed (:
Bootsy Collins (so by extension Parliment / Funkadelic)
BW4LYF . . . . . . PM me, I LOVE PMs. . . . . . Long live "NaDa's Body" . . . . . . Fantasy | Bisu/Best | Jaedong . . . . .

What I meant by "Funk Sound" is, well, this:

+ Show Spoiler [Parliament Funkadelic - FLASHLIGHT] +
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0JbUP-skb7E I added the caps }{:

+ Show Spoiler [Earth Wind & Fire - Let's G…] +

It all comes down to THE ONE:

Go learn about Bootsy, he's my favorite musician/artist, and illustrates the fundamental of Funk perfectly. When he was James Brown's (the real JB, Justin Bieber can kiss my ass) bass-man for a time, the way JB would discipline and get the group together was by having everything on the first, big, down, "The ONE" (ONE Two Three Four OWNED Two ...).

For something to port the name Funk, it needs an unmistakable bass-line and a solid audible beat. That's why I have issues whit calling JB's hits 'Funk' because I listen to them and "lol, where's the beat?". I appreciate it and can understand it, but it's not the same thing. Granted without JB there'd be no Funk (see, Bootsy), he laid the foundations, though I question if his music in itself is really funk (yes yes basically he changed it all up, but I feel he was more the ladder from ground to the heavens of Funk).

That Rare Funk torrent is not funk for me... couple of them are motown singers, the rest is just early soulr/rnb (like salt n pepa or latoya jackson). Thats only my opinion

But the most funny thing about torrents/music compliations I have found like 2 months ago:

http://my.opera.com/sovietgroove/blog/a-fake-soviet-funk-release

We seem to have very similar music taste. I like Funk even though i haven't been listening that much.

Though, i'm more of a "modern funk" guy than the older stuff. Still like all of em. Great blog again!
