Recently I went back to my Primary School (Elementary School for some of you guys) to visit my ex-English Teacher in lieu of Teacher's Day. She was very excited to see me again and asked me how I was doing, to which I replied that I wasn't doing well. I told her that my English results were faltering and that I wasn't doing particularly well in Math and Science.
She obviously was upset and asked if I was reading books consistently to help me improve my language and I replied, " Yes, of course. "
To my surprise, she then told me ,"Ezra, I know you can do it, you just have to sit down, and pay attention to your work. I know you are capable of doing well. You have an incredible talent and I know you possess the passion for English - so you can definitely do well." I was elated to hear those words from my teacher, and when she said those words to me, I perked up and felt like a total baller. Ergo, from now on, I have decided to strive for excellence in English and Literature like never before (also because I want to apply to a prestigious school 2 years since it has the International Baccalaureate program.)
She continued, "Look, don't worry about your Math and Science. What does doing well in those subjects tell you? It tells you that you can just sit in front of your desk, and memorize whatever is in front of you. Do you think that you will feel proud of yourself, or satisfied with yourself knowing that you had a perfect score in Math and Science only because you can memorize?"
She poked me in the chest with her finger in a rhythm that was synchronized with each word of the following sentence "No, you won't."
This whole episode made me feel better, but I honestly don't know what to make of it. Well, that's my story for Teacher's Day. Advice is much appreciated.

Did you tell her the real reason you weren't doing good in those subjects is because your crushing Nerd skullz on Starcraft?

Wait, doesn't doing well in math and science mean you know something that is actually useful? Math is more than just memorization, though that is a large part. If you don't understand how to apply concepts that you learn and shift ideas around you won't get very far.

I'm glad she was able to motivate you in this way, and it's even better that you want to improve yourself...
But let's not shit all over science and math while we're at it. That bastardization of those two subjects was unnecessary. Memorization is not the key to those subjects, logic, reason and empiricism are.

Wow, she is not biased at all lol. Not to discourage you, but that's like every other teacher's standard line if a student isn't too stupid (but maybe even then they say it, who knows) and then telling you that math and science are stupid memorizing? Let me tell you, language is more memorizing than math, all you have to do is memorize the words and the grammar, wow, no logic in there, for math, you can memorize every method, it won't help you if your basic understanding of math and the thinking are not present. That's why some people can study for hours and still do bad in the math test while others don't have to study and do good.

Haha, wooo - this one won't go down well with TL!
What's teacher's day anyways? High school students re-visit their primary schools?

So what's teacher's day? Don't think we have such a day in my country ... or maybe we do and that's why they hated me -_-'

I'll admit.
I was expecting something funny down the line of reading this blog.
On that note, I will leave and say. Study hard my Friend
study hard...

Damn, that story really had the making of a teacher-student porno.
Really though, good for you finally getting motivated. My grade 12 English teacher was also the most influential teacher I've ever had.

So mean to math and science lol.
I was in the full IB program back in highschool. English was easily my best subject and I even did my extended essay on an English subject (I advise you to do this: you don't need to research history through 20 dusty books, and you don't need to come up with an obscure science experiment to write about also requiring research. For English you just read a book and get a couple of the author's quotes and BS about it. I did the Bourne Identity series of books and got an A. Fuck yeahhhh).
Now I'm in engineering because English was a pretty dead end in terms of future financial capability.
Edit: I'd also like to add that English teachers in high school are always awesome.

Everything science related was invented because of memorization...OKAY Cool that she motivated you, but I am definitely offended by her comments

It's not like english is more meaningful work or even more difficult.
But I suppose I guess I'm glad you were motivated.

Just stopping by to say Ezra is an awesome name! There is an alumni player for my college's Ultimate Frisbee team named Ezra and he's a baller, are you as well?
Your post makes me want to go visit my elementary school teacher, she was great.

Everybody on TL is a baller.
Also, please, I don't want this to turn into a "Science & Maths vs English" debate, it's just something my teacher said. =/
