After I came back to the U.S. for a few days, my aunt handed me a letter, stating that she would get sued if she does not pay $3400 settlement to the copyright suing company for my pirated porn. Needless to say, I was shocked. Who would have thought that the lighting would hit them ? I immediately asked TL for advice in my previous blog. Many kind individual and even a few lawyers gave me somewhat comforting advices, building a shaking beacon of hope ( I <3 this community ) It fell shortly, though. My aunt with the help of her lawyer friend discovered that the company already subpoena her identity, thwarting the motion to quash process, and we are among the small pool of victims, so the risk of getting sued if we don't pay the money is quite high. In the end, she decided to pay them (with my parents money, of course). Unfortunately, the story did not end here; its snowball effect's just begun
"Trust is like a paper; when it's crushed, it'll never be perfect again", in my case the paper is burned. My aunt is a strict and law abiding person, so piracy is a big no-no for her. A few days after the incident, she had my computer formatted (and while it was at the shop, Best Buy -_-, she had the tech guy look into my computer, disregarding my privacy, and discovered my porn, movies, and music stash. I naively thought that they would just format my hard drive, so I didn't bother to delete everything but I digress.. ), moved my computer down stair, took away my administrator title, and installed various monitoring programs. She basically took a letter P out of PC. I'm not criticizing or complaining. I bite my teeth and accept the ridiculous consequences of my action. However, out of frustration and curiosity, I foolishly googled "administrator bypass" ( I need someone to type the password whenever I want to install ANYTHING) and got caught by the perfect monitoring program which made the mater even worse. Some good things came out of this, though. Now, I can study for the ACT and do college search without any distraction, and finally fix my sleep schedule .
I also learn so many valuable lessons. 1. A working relationship needs trust, and people with different standard can't comfortably live in the same house unless a person steps down. (My aunt even threaten me that if I fuck up again, she's gonna kick me out f her house . Man, I will probably live alone in the future. It's way simpler that way...) 2. Think before you act. (so generic >.<) 3. Pirate responsibly. Learn how to use peerblock and don't torrent porn. Still, I can't promise I will stop pirating after I leave my aunt's house
I hope this wall of text is not too boring for you guys and hope that you guys would not get into an absurd situation like me
Cheers
Tl;DR: The lighting struck I got fucked But I will try to live with it
That's pretty terrible but its not like you paid for those things right? No real losses there. As with the situation with your aunt, she just doesn't know better but is the authority in her house so you should listen to her while pitying her lack of understanding at the same time.
You're the criminal here. You're the one who was caught stealing. There is no "victim" card here that you can play.
Sure, it sucks, but it's all more than reasonable and to be expected. The fact that you consider stealing in the future once away from people who can actually effectively monitor your actions is concerning, but none of my business, so whatever.
Whatever type of porn it was that you had downloaded, start doing lots of searches for porn of the opposite sexual orientation just to screw with your aunt when she sees a report of what you have been doing with your computer activity!

YES, and then blog about it. It might be bigger than Inc's hardest day.
But here ive been caught downloading a few things from Telus, mostly games, and one movie. They just send a email to my dad saying we know the file and from where u downloaded it from. i just ignored them and nothing happened.
anyways sucks u got caught, good luck in the future though!

torrenting is one of the most obvious ways to get caught :/
as for the guy, i feel bad for him, has to suck not having your own computer
Wow, you learned a lot from the piracy suit. Worth 3400 easily imo. You're quite the introspective person. You aren't writing this post for your Aunt's benefit, are you :-p. Regardless, you sound very intelligent.
I don't understand why you guys say "watch porn online, don't download it, hey who downloads porn?". Could someone please give me some links to free porn streaming websites that actually stream in HD quality? Thanks.
You might be able to keylog your own computer. While a password may be needed to install anything, does it forbid all but a whitelist of programs from running? How about running your own via java or something?
Also, what the fuck kind of monitoring program is that? just delete that shit, and use free streaming sites for porn, download them from there if you want. I pretty much haven't torrented porn since PureTNA went down, saddest day ever.

I have 7 letters from cogeco saying they'll shut down my internet if I don't stop pirating, 1 from square enix, 2 from electronic arts, and 4 from bethesda
No one has done shit, they just keep adding to my collection
Man, what a shitty situation. These kind of extortion and blatant abuse of outdated legal framework are just a few reasons why I hate our legal system.
For those that responded with "you pirated, you're the criminal," you do realize that pretty much all the youtube videos of BW are in the same legal hole, right?
On September 01 2011 05:16 Attican wrote: You downloaded pirated porn? Come on, really.
How dare he not pay for porn. Not like billion other human beings.
Fuck man I pay for porn the Kenyan princes send me through email all the time. Apparently it's invisible porn so I have to just imagine the boobs being there.
Too bad you got caught up in it as part of the "anti-pirating example" guinea pigs. Hope things quiet down.

Actually, here's the argument I used to give to people to understand the scope of the adult industry. Imagine all the factory music that gets made, but that the RIAA et al. make lawsuits over to protect revenues that they're ostensibly losing. Then imagine how much porn people pay for that despite the commonplace downloading, the adult companies don't need to play as many legal cards as the music industry. Despite what happened to boon2537, I still don't think they care so much except about distributors.
I think Canada is still relatively safe with regards to downloading contents over bit torrent. Most of the time, ISPs just send out warning letters with no subsequent actions.

Your aunt is overly paranoid in my opinion. I suppose its to be expected of a member of the generation that thinks its a good idea to click "yes" for every pop up on any piece of shit website that they may find in the darkest corners of the internet and then wonder why they got "viruses".
ROFL what in the world. I download massive (I'm talking TBs worth) amount of TVs and Movies + porn and not a single fuck was given by anyone.
My dad came over a few weeks ago and saw the songs in my itune (I actually purchased them due to how easy it is compare to say getting TV shows) and blasted me for wasting money then tell me the sites that he can download stuff for free rofl.
But then again I don't live in America. Still weird though as I hear people getting cease of desist letters all the time but not me. Can't the ISP monitor the traffic and think hmm this guy can't be doing legitimate stuff pulling TBs in a month.
Anyway think of it as a motivation, when you move out and pay for your own internet it would be much sweeter
The thing is to a certain extent the copyright framework needs a serious re-working. There are laws out there that just doesn't make any sense. To a certain extent, what they did to you is extortion to a degree; their profits are dropping like mad and they need a way to shut down all the free porn on the internet. What I would do is seriously man up and talk to your aunt since she is invading your privacy....A LOT

U watch porn in HD? Kids these days, it wasn't that long ago when the only porn you'd find for free on internet, the only evidence it actually was porn was the noisy sound from the vid, the pictures u had to imagine for yourself.
On another note, hey man, it must suck, but at least you got a motivation for finishing school and move to your own place

My request, coming from an employee of Zinemax (ZineMax Media Inc.), is that you kindly piss off and stop downloading Bethesda games, as they are lovely people and don't deserve to be pirated from.
Yes I know people will always pirate everything forever, but it doesn't mean I have to be happy about it. And I also know it won't stop people from pirating Skyrim. :p
I'll still kindly request that people pirate first, and buy afterwards, if they enjoy the game enough, as if a game doesn't do well in sales, a lot of people in the dev team get unjustly fucked for it and usually have to go find new jobs. Lol. The more you know!
I never understood any of this data piracy stuff... I just doesn't make sense to me.
How can you "own" data, as in own a string of numbers or something? What does that mean? Let's say a song can be reduced to a string of 1's, and 0's. Do they own only that specific set? How many digits would I have to change before they can't claim ownership over the data anymore?
And data can be converted into so many different formats. If I encrypt a movie and let people download it, they aren't downloading the movie. They are downloading a useless string of data. So is "converting" or "adapting" data so that it resembles data that other individuals or companies own also illegal?
I just don't understand any of it. Anyway, that sucks for you OP. My wife and I still pirate like crazy lol... Here's another thing I can't understand: Let's say you argue that you have an unsecured wireless connection, and that it wasn't you who actually pirated the movie? How can they possibly prosecute you then? The whole thing is just so ridiculous to me.

Someone assembled those 1s and 0s into a useful order. That's what your paying for - the order that costs a lot of money to develop. It's not stealing because you haven't taken any property, but it's illegal because people put time and effort into developing that order of 1s and 0s.
Someone invents a new medicine. You can't just take the formula for yourself and go "LOL it's just carbon and hydrogen and oxygen." Bad analogy but you get the point.
The fact that you think it's ridiculous is ridiculous to me. Just admit that you don't think you will get caught so it's nice getting stuff for free. Don't pretend that it's ridiculous and only 1s and 0s so there's no problem pirating.
Anyways, it's a complicated issue so I don't want to get too deep into it.

Pirating and stealing are different things.
Please explain?
Stealing removes the item from the owners possession. Pirating does not.
It doesn't make it less wrong, but they are not the same.

You are responsible for it though, so when you don't secure it, it's your fault and you will have to pay for it.

Like every month or whenever I feel like it I show my parents/aunt/uncle random new movies, DVD pirated of course, and when they asked me about it.. I just explained its like jay walking or littering.. illegal but no one really gets caught, and it can be expensive if you do. I guess its what your family is like, I just think if I ever got caught like that, it wouldn't be that terrible. Aside from the 3400, they would freak the fuck out. and Bro Redtube.

Skyrim? DIDN'T NOTCH MAKE THAT GAME?
Assuming that's a stab at the whole Scrolls lawsuit.
a) that's Bethesda's Lawyers - Notch is a very good friend of Bethesda (They were making jokes back and forth with him, it was hilarious. Plus the Quake match or w/e was agreed on, but the Lawyers didn't want to make fools of themselves and said no)...They lawyers over there are just being a-holes.
b) Zinemax != Bethesda. Zinemax Online Studios is the same "level" in the company as Bethesda, in that they're both owned by Zinemax Media Solutions.
Can't you just get past all that username shit by booting the computer in safe mode and creating yourself a new user account with admin rights? Possibly remove all the control software while you're at it.

You can't spell your company's name correctly? :/
Also, what involvement does Zenimax have, exactly?
