Looking back on my life, I can see that games have had a massive effect on me. Some of the earliest memories I have are of playing StarCraft with my brother and dad. I can vividly remember the effect the game had on five-year-old me and my seven-year-old brother: games where we did nothing but chase each other around with hallucinated units, two hour long turtle fests accomplished by mostly building photon cannons around the bases of each other, and many more shenanigans. I remember playing 2v1s against my dad and losing every one because he actually knew how to play the game. I remember finding out that there were cheat codes in the campaign, and using them to great effect on the missions. I remember gaining skill and then trying to do those same campaign missions without cheats, to mixed results. I remember moving back to the multiplayer aspect of the game, this time trying to beat my brother rather than just play a game with him. I remember actually gaining skill, and then beating him fair and square.
Then StarCraft 2 came out. The best present I got for my 16th birthday (which happens to be only a few days after the game's release date). Other teens may have gotten more expensive or just more presents, but I didn't care. I had StarCraft 2.
And now I'm at today, looking back on my life and StarCraft. Sure, it may not be nearly as intertwined as Day[9]'s, but still, StarCraft has always been a major influence in my life. I hope it can still be as much of an influence in the future too.
Note: Sorry about the last post. I accidentally hit some key and it posted the two lines that I had written so far. I'm not as tech savvy as I would like to be. The number of views it got in about 15 minutes was awfully surprising though...
