So today I decided I wanted something different, so I bought Street Fighter IV Arcade Edition from steam, and I enjoyed the 4h I played it...until I went online.

Holy shit, I get devastated without even landing a single hit, I am now looking for tutorials for the basics of SF and especially for Juri...hell, not even starcraft had such a rough start when I began laddering. I never thought that I was going to get decimated so easily, my gamer ego has gone to hell...but oh well, I'm actually motivated to learn the basics and to totally break some jaws once I hit the ranked matches

And I thought I was good at fighting games...but this is no Killer Instinct or Soul Calibur...AAARGH QQ

/end small QQ-Rant thingy.

Well, I used to play a ton of Quake 3 arena before, is it similar to that or they made some ungodly hard version of the game?

if you go to the shoryuken.com forums you can look at the character sub-forums for some help. there'll probably be match-up guides and combo guides to get you started. SF is fun but im too cheap to buy AE hehe

- Yeah, you can expect to not do so well when you first start out in AE, sort of like starting on ICCUP. It's important to practice a lot, just go to the training stage and practice hitting combos consistently.
- Juri is also not a very beginner-friendly character, a lot of her play involves holding fireballs during combos and such. If you are intent on using her, go ahead, but other characters would probably be better for learning the basics.
- Feel free to ask questions in the SSF4:AE thread, everyone's very helpful there.

Quake 3 (and Quake Live) are like Cod & BF compared to QuakeWorld

It shouldn't be that hard of a game to break in to, especially compared to things like BW. Games like CS, Q3/QL, etc. are also much more difficult for new players (not saying they are hard to get in to, just comparatively).

Fighting games are probably the easiest genre of competitive games to get "decent" at. I've been playing for 11~ years and have taught a ton of new players, and those I've taught since the online "boom" usually start winning after a couple hours of figuring out their character and the basics of the game mechanics.

To reach a high level, it takes a large amount of dedication like anything else, but honestly, just keep playing. Within a week, you'll be destroying most people online (assuming you play with the intent to improve).

Basics that will have you beating 75% of the people you play against:
Try to block every single attack (make it a priority over attacking; once you learn the game, find your own playstyle)
Learn all of your B&Bs (bread and butter combos; simple ones (generally) that do the most damage or set up supers, etc.)
Learn all of your normals (know what each does, including range)
Learn a solid setup/combo for your supers/ultras
Block on wake-up (as your character stands) or tech; don't attack unless they are MASSIVELY telegraphing their attack and are in the middle of it
Apply the most basic of "mind games" to a fallen opponent (move in and out of their attack range, duck randomly, pretend to do things and do something else)

Boom, instant 75% win percentage. You can do all of that within a day or two of playing, but keep at it for a week and you'll be set.

After that, play a ton, visit shoryuken.com and discuss the game more in-depth.

1. Play a shoto (Ken, Ryu, Akuma, etc.)
2. Jump in roundhouse, low roundhouse 2 hit combo.
2a. Sometimes, throw.
3. If they jump at you, shoryuken.
4. If they keep attacking, randomly ultra.

That should at least win some matches to get you started

Here's a post from the AE thread that goes into a bit more detail.

Ahaha that's pretty much what I do with Akuma ... doesn't win you that many games once you hit the people that can actually play the game though I get wrecked at a weekly hangout thing in SF4, I'm actually going to get destoryed in like 3 hours ahaha
