Japan, the land where 90% of weird and disgusting things originate. They never cease to amaze and terrify me.
So, I was bored yesterday and decided to pick a random new anime to watch. I do this sometimes, I watch 1 episode and if it's good I keep going, otherwise I forget about it.
Well, the one I got yesterday was special... R-15. So special I need to subject you nice, naive people to this horror to make myself feel better.
http://myanimelist.net/anime/10611/
Here's the description for you : + Show Spoiler +Akutagawa Takuto is a teenage porn novel writer. He enters Hirameki Gakuen, which accepts only geniuses with outstanding talent. He leads his classmates with his porn skills to win the interclass competition.
Still, I stuck with it and watched 1 episode. I have not entirely recovered mentally.
It's not only as fucking weird as you imagine, the entire show is based around school KIDS (that look like they are 10). Besides the fact that a school for any person with a "special talent" is a fucking terrible idea (hint : they all look like idiots who have a one track brain, what a terrible way to raise children), how in the world is THAT a special talent.
"And then he fucked her...on the desk! Fucking genius!"
Seriously, the kid is just standing around and a girl talks to him then suddenly we see flashes of anime porn that represent his imagination running wild. We all fantasize about crap but this kid just stops cold and goes into a trance and starts drooling like a lunatic. He has some serious problems man.
I can't tell you much more about this show because there is no way I would watch a second episode. No shower will make you feel clean after this.
But wait! There's more! While I was finding that link to the description, they were nice enough to link me to another anime : http://myanimelist.net/anime/8876/Koe_de_Oshigoto!
+ Show Spoiler +Koe de Oshigoto! is a story about Aoyagi Kanna, a 16 year-old girl who was asked to become an erotic game voice actress on her 16th birthday by her 28 year-old sister at her company.
Jesus fucking christ... just wow. So now you're telling me that all this time, hentai games and videos hire 16 year old kids to do the voice overs?
Welp, I'm going to have to pass on watching this one after my traumatizing experience with R-15...
Seriously, who do these shows target?
To end on a better note, he's something midly related because hey, sometimes Japan is crazy AND funny! + Show Spoiler +

I don't think you should see it as a nationwide culture acceptance thing, because it's definitely not accepted by everyone. Rather, I think instead of something like a horrible crime against humanity, pedophilia is more like umm... a foot fetish kind of thing where a lot of people will still see it as weird as fuck. There's some laws being pushed right now though to stop this kind of pedophila in cartoons.
I mean, sexual acts with a minor are still illegal after all.

Well I saw a documentary some years ago about sex in Japan. It dealt with sexual norms and the general role of sex in Japan. What struck me at the time was just how alien it was to the way we do things here in the west. More than once during the show, I remember thinking,"We could never do that shit here".

This was many years ago before youtube became such a big thing. You probably might find it there. If I find it, I'll link it.

Not sure where that came from. I found something I thought was funny/creepy and blogged about it and exaggerated my reaction slightly.
I know Japan is not all crazy. It just happens that a lot of weird things come from that country and it was the title that came to mind.

Yeah, it's terrible to see what anime have become. But there are enough people who watch this kind of stuff, just go into the ADT thread. Needless to say, I have barely watched any anime from the past 2-3 years.

Japan is a place of great clashes between old and new. Isn't Bukkakke supposed to be really smutty there, but it's sort of normalized here? I know there was something that we take for granted, maybe I'm too drunk. But anyways that anime sounds pretty interesting. At least it's not like in NA where we've got essentially the same old medical dramas, reality shows, etc..Sigh maybe time for bed

Whatever. I wonder about anime in general most of the time...although I have seen the human tetric before and that is awesome.

This really is a 'horror' to you? I think you are a bit on the sensitive side if you think this is a prime example of weird anime.
I just watched episode 1 of R-15 expecting it to be ridiculous and it was.... barely anything worth mentioning let alone making a blog about.

I've seen it all from the weirdest hentais to the craziest stuff on the internet. I've been online since I was a child, over 15 years ago or so.
But this concept, yes, it's something else.
1) It's supposed to be a kid's show essentially. It airs on TV. 2) It's about a child (drawn to look like an even younger child) that is a porn writer. All the characters look like they are 10 and his fantasies are ridiculous.
Yes I went over the top in my OP (because it would've been boring otherwise) but stop a moment to think about it. This should not exist. The person who wrote this is not entirely well I suspect.

If you think that shit's weird... you should see some of the stores in Akihabara / Den Den Town. I showed my friend a store the other day we found a few months back (we were innocently looking for Halloween costumes when we found it.) Starts off with Hentai.. and gets progressively worse as you climb 6 floors of just weird/nasty/horrid/surprising stuff. But what really weirds you out when you see all the stuff is, there is clearly a market for it, or such a large store filled with so much downright weird and nasty porn and sex stuff would't still be open.
There's a reason I don't pick anime without a good recommendation from a friend, and I always watch where I am checking in book stores. Luckily they tend to keep the weird stuff away from the Shonen type manga. Never go into a "used clothes" section in one of those shops either. It's not second hand clothes as you'd imagine.. it's usually a girl's worn them for a day or two and then vacuum packed it for some weirdo's enjoyment.

I don't see the difference between this and the stuff we see on MTV or VH1.
They are both aimed at horny teenagers/young adults and they are both overly sexualized. Only difference is one is hand drawn and the other has real life actors.
There's no need to shit on Japan because you are ignorant. If you want to watch a good anime there are plenty out there. Check out sites like myanimelist.net for a full description before you start watching, then maybe next time you wont be so shocked.

I was watch the nick show victorious, you know the one with victoria justice? I was pretty shocked at the amount of suggestive gestures the characters make, i mean i've seen hannah montana it's nothing like that. I saw The Hottest Day, and there was a part where a girl was jumping around in a bikini getting shot by boys carrying waterguns, it's was just weird cause i was with my cousins who were 9 year olds. The amount of midriff baring and cleavage is pretty excessive, i'm no prude but it's not the show you'd want your 10 year old boy watching. There's was also a quote at the end of the show 'I heard you swallow' that's the one that really got to me, i mean what else would it mean...
If you wanna see what else google tvtropes victorious, click the first link

I don't really care about tentacle rape or whatever, and in fact I find reaction to "weeaboo" stuff pretty contrived. The main thing that rubs me the wrong way is that a lot of Japanese media have good ideas in them, only the characters are 10 years younger than they should be. Like, imagine you're watching the Sopranos or something except all the mobsters are in middle school. It kind of ruins the effect. There are certain Japanese things that I've read/watched that I really loved, except all of the main characters giving philosophical soliloquies are like half my size. I can't really buy a speech about the nature of reality from a little child.

You see, if you have a sick fetish, you can probably find a whole forum devoted to your fetish on the Internets. This forum will be full of hundreds or even thousands of people who will tell you that your fantasies about raping your sister or eating people are completely normal So instead of overcomming your disgusting tendencies and bettering yourself, they'll encourage you, tell you your shit doesn't stink, make you think your shit must be embraced, not just by you, but by the rest of the world. You'll then procede to draw or write about your fantasies and put them on DeviantART and Love Shy.

First of all, you're watching anime, which is already 90% weird and disgusting. Second, the reason why it seems weird is because people actually look for this stuff and then use it to discriminate against the country, which makes even more people look for it and pile it on. This stuff is very niche. It would be like generalizing 4chan to the US.

One thing that many people unfamiliar with "anime" fail to realize are these shows are not targeted at children in the first place. The shows listed on the front page are usually shown past midnight on weekdays, occupying paid timeslots similar to informercials we have in the west (Sham-WoW, Girls Gone Wild, etc), for the purpose of selling DVDs and BDs. They are alien to us, because we're so used to associate anything animated or drawn with children, rather than accepting that it's simply another form of mass medium like sitcom or movies.
The anime made for kids and watched by kids are the same ones that got eventually ported over state-side, yu-gi-oh, pokemon, sailor moon, etc. No, they don't let kids watch shows about 16-year old porn voice-actresses.

This is a really important point. Because of Disney, animations in North America do get associated with children's entertainment like toys and games, even though the average video gamer is in their 20s or so. 4kids was infamous for censoring the crap out of One Piece, which had blood, cleavage, and death in the original Japanese version. Now Funimation us doing the dub work I believe?

What this guy said.
While it's cool and all that you wanna blog about your inability to understand another cultures foibles (instead gasping on the internet and hoping for more gasps), it's actually fairly fucking stupid to make such a generalizing derogatory statement about another country (let alone on an international site like TL).
You should go to Japan. From my own experience they are probably some of, if not, the most kind, considerate, and polite people in the world. It's a very different culture than the west, but you'll learn a lot more about why these kinds of things exist if you study the culture instead of of sitting on your hands going "lolwtf is this".

Japan has a highly unsexual culture. People on the internet don't seem to understand that. Basically everything you know about Japan is the small reactionary fringe that is the product of this restrictiveness about sex.
There is no country where people have less sex than Japan. In Japan prostitution is illegal and pornography is completely censored.
Also, if you have ever seen Japanese porn you will realize even in pornography the idea that sex is something two people enjoy is pretty alien.
The reason why some Japanese male grope woman on the train is because they and their wives don't sleep in the same room, let alone in the same bed. It is not strange for wife and husband to sleep in separate rooms. Also, many marriages are arranged marriages. Maybe that adds to it too.
One reason why there are so many western male & Japanese female couples compared to western female & Japanese male couples is because Japanese culture is still very conservative and male oriented and woman have to be perfect housewives. When we are at the point where Japanese females are often not conservative enough for Japanese males, how are they going to handle a western female?
Ooh and btw Tokyo is as much Japan as New York is the US or Amsterdam is the Netherlands.

In Japan prostitution is illegal and pornography is completely censored. Prostitution itself is illegal but there are enough holes to slip through. So it's only illegal in theory but not in praxis. The porn industry(movies) is huge and you can get whatever you can imagine(that was probably what SarR was referring to). Officially sold porn is censored, yeah, but unofficial is not. Anyway, it's not like the law was made in recent times, so it doesn't really apply to the current state. It just happens that they don't care enough to abolish it.
Other than that, the hentai market is booming as well. It's just a genre of anime but it's gigantic in comparison. Whatever you can imagine applies here as well.
And there you see where the interest in sex goes
(Also, some school girls in Japan sell themselves to get money, so that's another aspect. It's probably better to say that Japan has everything but normal sex.)
Another point is that the men often work hard and long, so they don't really have time for sex with their wifes anyway.
|
Of course prostitution being illegal doesn't mean it isn't there. Prostitution once was legal but they banned it in more recent times.
The law assumes porn is banned. But still pornography in whatever form being more popular than expected is exactly the result of restrictiveness about sex in Japanese culture. You see on the internet sometimes reactions like "omg they allow the craziest types of porn, but now they are suddenly so prude?"
The point is and remains that Japanese society is often the complete opposite of what people think it is. Just because there's a couple of crazy wild young people and a couple of perverts doesn't change that.
In Japan you don't even talk about sex, period. And often you don't have any either. Now the US is also a conservative country so maybe it is different from Americans. But if you are from Sweden or the Netherlands, it is more obvious.

But if you are from Sweden or the Netherlands, it is more obvious. About 50 years ago? Probably because of diseases spreading that way? It's not like they banned it because it's prostitution.
Porn isn't banned, you can easily buy movies and stuff. Only prostitution is banned and that means sexual intercourse with people for money is banned, but anal sex and stuff is still allowed. Also, there are dating services where you just pay for the company of the girl(or man) and nothing more. You don't directly pay for the sex but it can be a part of it. That's what I meant with holes in the system. And those really get exploited.
That was always the case, being polite and everything(outward). It didn't change at all over the times which can be a good thing. It's not different in the Western culture, just check the real life and compare it with the internet. So Japanese aren't that different.
You talk about it with friends, that's normal everywhere. But you don't really talk about it in public which is not uncommon here as well. Funnily enough, there are ads for sex toys which you won't really find here(at least I haven't seen any).

Yeah, after getting home at 2/3am, you will certainly want to have sex with your wife. And often enough, after work, you go into a bar with your co-workers and drink a bit to relieve stress(instead of having sex), so there is your explanation.

Again, you yourself reject the sexual frustration argument. When you claim that men are too tired/whatever for something as easy as sex, it implies sexual frustration being not related to this scenario
