Things I am sick of reading on TL...
A random vent

"Actually, the earth wasn't considered flat back then. It was known that the earth was round going all the way back to the blah blah blah, oh and here's this wikipedia link where I learned all of this."

Ok, thanks for completely missing or ignoring the point that was attempting to be made with the analogy. Maybe the analogy isn't perfect, but hopefully you have the common sense to know what the author was driving at, and the restraint to not correct them in a completely off-topic way as weak evidence of your own education. If you have anything to actually contribute to the thread other than "I'm just popping in to say this random analogy is flawed because X," then please offer that instead.

"Oh great, IdrA lost, time for his insane fanboys to rage and overrun the LR thread like a cancer!"

There are times when the reaction to something becomes even worse than the original problem. Cue a thousand people complaining about twenty complaining IdrA fans. Cue a thousand people whining about the twenty people who are whining about imbalance. Whining about whining is more irritating and far more common than the whining itself. Yes, I know I am being hypocritical by whining about whining about whining. The difference is the lack of a thousand other like-minded individuals spamming the twenty into oblivion.

On a related note: For some reason the typical person absolutely loves an easy fight. Make a well-thought out post or argument, and it is typically ignored. But post something that is widely known to be incorrect, or easy to contradict, and you will get thirty people quickly responding to tell you why you are wrong. That's how threads get derailed by a single troll, because everyone wants to argue with the moron instead of simply IGNORING MORONS! Yes, it's an easy battle. That doesn't mean you and everyone else has to fight it to boost your own ego.

"LOL UR HURTING ESPORTS!"

Yeah... it stopped being funny. A while ago.

"I obviously didn't read the OP but let me make this post based upon the title of the thread alone."

I think the mods should start instituting thread title ban traps. Create a thread with some sensational title, then write somewhere in the OP "Warning: This is a ban trap. Do not post in this thread or you will be banned." It will be like shooting fish in a barrel.

"stop using that term"

This is a video game, not a religion. No word is sacred, or holy. Yes, it is irritating when someone who is ignorant of a subject misuses a word. The reality of the world is that the majority dictates the meaning of a language, whether you want them to or not. You can try your best to prevent the inevitable, but telling people how ignorant they are and how a word is off limits because of their lack of reverance towards it will just make you sound like an elitist with too much nostalgia.

"Why are people bad mannered? Are people becoming more bad mannered? What's wrong with the community?"

lol welcome to the internet. Let me show you around. Here's "anonymity." It means you can say whatever you want and get away with it and experience practically no consequences. It causes many people to act like dicks. I'm not sure what sheltered world you grew up in where everyone was polite and courteous and calm, but in the real world there are a huge number of assholes. But not only assholes. There are many people, like myself, who just think that BM can be hilarious or entertaining. It's not a problem unless you take it too seriously, and then it's only your problem.

No, it's not going to "hurt the community." The "community" you speak of is just a bunch of different people who play video games. Most of them have experience online, or shit talking with their friends. I doubt very many of them are gonna say "this person was a meanie to me, I'm gonna stop playing!" Anyone who does say that needs to grow some thicker skin, or stay off the internet entirely.

Shit talking can actually add a lot to competition. It raises the stakes, makes things more exciting, creates drama and hype. IdrA vs. Cruncher have been some of the most entertaining matches, because you don't know what's going to happen next. You see things you don't typically see, you can root harder for or against your player of choice... Long story short, the internet has NEVER been mannered, just accept it and stop being so sensitive.

"Are you kidding? He was a God in Warcraft 3!"

Yeah... and this is not Warcraft 3. I don't care about their history with a different game, I care about their results in THIS one. I had to listen to people hype Grubby for weeks only to watch him flounder in the NASL and lose 0-2 to Artosis. Artosis...

I'm sure I could think of a hundred more examples, but I'm done venting for now. I hope you enjoyed reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it. Go ahead an offer up some examples of your own.

Wait, does this mean it is really bad idea to post in this thread?

The only thing I disagree with you on is about the world being flat thing, it's a common misconception that the majority of the people back in the day thought it was flat, saying that they did is blatantly wrong and should be pointed out as such.

I don't think a ban trap is really necessary, even though it is a funny idea, they expose themselves pretty quickly anyway.

Hmm... I agree the whole "are people becoming more bm?!!?!" is annoying (people have always been bm? what memo did you miss?), but I kinda disagree with:

"I'm not sure what sheltered world you grew up in where everyone was polite and courteous and calm, but in the real world there are a huge number of assholes."

In the real world there are also certain social standards about what is and isn't acceptable to say. For example screaming profanities and racial slurs at a coworker is not acceptable, etc. There's a point I think when it's not longer just how things are on the internet (didn't gg/told me to fuck off when I tried to talk to him/called me a fag and rage-quit), and something that should actually be changed. It's how things are unfortunately on the internet. Unlike the real world, there aren't consequences for being an asshole. That doesn't mean it's right, or that people who are upset by it grew up sheltered. But no, I don't think making threads about it, or asking Blizzard to monitor everyone's chat logs, or some nonsense will fix it.

I don't agree with all of them but I think the Ban Trap idea is freaking brilliant. It would really weed people out.

1. I have no comment on your analogy because I've never seen that on TL.
2. I don't read LR threads but that indeed sounds annoying.
3. I find "Hurting ESPORTS" funny still, so I'll use it.
4. Yea, it's annoying when people don't read a whole OP. On the other hand, peope have started making novel-length OPs when they aren't necessary. The solution is somewhere in the middle - less writing and more reading.
5. You contradict yourself here. Yes, it's extremely annoying that Starcraft language is being diluted by people who don't fully understand it. Some veterans are trying to stop that. That's it. They aren't saying it's Holy, they're just trying to get you to understand the full meaning of the words that you're using.
6. You have a join date of August 2010, so I'm not sure why you are telling us how TL used to be. I'm telling you negativity has skyrocketed around here. "Welcome to the internet" indeed, but not welcome to TL. That's it.
7. Also never seen anyone write this.

About 2/, yeah, whiners about idra whiners are terrible too. That doesn't mean that when idra lose the LR threads aren't becoming shit for a long time (yesterday idra lost in page 5, page 30 was still filled with whine about his game for instance).
I agree that people should stop to whine about the whine, that would help a lot as their whine about the whine is because they want a quality thread but by whining about the whine they participate on degrading it.

In several threads I've read, they won't even speak the word. They call it the "b-word." I guess it's kind of a joke but it really seems over the top after a while. And most of the people talking about it aren't trying to educate people, so much as they are bashing those who misunderstand it. That's what I've seen at least.

I hate that whenever there is a thread in the general forum regarding someones death, there will be about a million people going "RIP" "RIP" "RIP XXX" "RIP". It's so annoying, why the hell would i read a thread if nobody says anything but "RIP" in it?

The problem with the analogy is that it is based on a falsehood -- the presumption that those who came before us were ignorant of how the world works, and that while we're ignorant as well, we've learned more and progressed so much since then. The problem with that? It is wrong.

It is saying:

"Look how little they knew, and look how far we've came! Can you imagine, years from how, how much more we'll know about the world and universe?"

That is the entire point of the analogy. It is citing someone held in high regard, accusing them of ignorance, and applying the logic to modern society.

That is wrong. The entire argument for the analogy is based on the ignorance of previous generations. It is completely relying on the notion that they were ignorant, we've learned more, and although we're still ignorant, we'll progress much further than now and look back on how ignorant previous generations (our generation) were.

That argument falls to shit when we realize that the assumptions made about previous generations is wrong. They weren't ignorant. They DID know almost everything we know about how the world and universe work. They had geniuses, just as we do today, and they were calculating precise measurements about outer space long before we did.

The analogy, moving COMPLETELY away from using an actual reference and person, is assuming we're making some linear progression of knowledge. That isn't how it has been working out. We're constantly making progress, but it isn't linear. The majority of what we know about the universe was known before anyone of us were alive, and before our great-great-great grandparents were alive.

It is an analogy completely based on things that are flat out wrong. Yes, we will continue to progress our understanding, but the analogy is based on this (repeating it, because it is... the point):

"Even a few hundred years ago, they knew so little! Look how far we've came, and yet still live in ignorance! Can you imagine how much we'll know in a few hundred years?"

That only works if they (those who lived a few hundred years ago) were that ignorant. They weren't. The analogy does not work because it is based on falsehoods. It WOULD work if it were true, and WOULD work if it was:

"Look at how evolution was understood during Darwin's era! See how much we've progressed? In a few hundred years..." etc.

Why does that work, and the other doesn't? Because this one is based on fact.

I do not mean to attack you, and I am not the type of asshole who normally responds to people who post that failed analogy, but when you go out of your way to defend it, I feel obliged.

Yeah, that's a good one too. I noticed that the only day, mostly spammed with RIP and frowning faces. It's kind of annoying, but at the same time there might be people who were close to the person and want to speak or offer condolences or something. Guess it depends on how close the person was to the actual community.

Agree with all of them except the BM argument because this isn't the internet this is Starcraft which has always been above and beyond the most manner game with the most manner community.

And I would rather people try to keep it that way then just let it slide into oblivion and make the argument "everyone else is doing it!".

Idgaf how people act in HoN or WoW, this is Starcraft so manner the fuck up.

certainly agree with the people picking apart analogies so they can be politically correct while completely missing the whole point you're trying to make.

Oh, well that's dumb.

It's because each time someone posts "xxx for bonjwa !", even jokingly, you ca nbe sure that the 20 next pages will be a discussion on how it wasn't appropriate to use that word and how xxx players doesn't deserve that title, each time the same discussion :D So people don't use the term anymore cause when the term is written, even without saying xxx is a bonjwa, you can be sure the thread will turn to shit.
