Hello TL.
What is the best way to approach GM promotion?
I am a High Masters Zerg player now, playing since the end half of beta. Boasting 1977 points, getting matched with GMs and high masters, and also getting favored vs GMs as well as Even Teams, i think i could potentially get GM next season.
But how should i approach this promotion? What should I do to give me the best chance of promotion?
1) Keep playing games and hopefully not get on a losing streak before GM release, which is 2 weeks after season 3?
2) Stop laddering until GM is released?
3) Play fewer games then normal b/c of fear of losing streak?
Side Question: If i only play two games in season 3, one for promotion and one for GM placement, will I get into GM given that my MMR is high enough, or do i need to play more games?
TY for reading, birdkicker.524 hopefully s3 GM

If you are good enough to beat GM players, you shouldn't need to fear going on a massive losing streak. If you lose a lot of games, it's because you deserve it. If you win, obviously you deserve it (unless you cheese every game..)

The best approach is to keep laddering. The more you ladder, the more you will improve. Even if you go on a losing stream, the amount that you will improve will make getting into GM slightly easier.

You approach it by being top 200 in your region.
If you really have more MMR than some GM players (you only get booted out of GM in a season for being inactive I believe) then you could very well get placed next season if you are indeed top 200 and you keep your MMR up. Basically, if you really feel you are a shoe-in, then you should get promoted very quickly (actually I think they schedule when they do the GM league).
I'll find an explanation thread for you just in case I'm wrong and/or you need more.
EDIT: Found an FAQ.
Pretty much just keep it up if you feel you will get in and when they make the league for Season 3 then bam, you'll know for sure.

This. Otherwise you'll get rusty. I think you got gm if you just maintain your skill level.

Even if he cheeses every game he still deserves it... I'm not sure where this mentality of cheese = undeserving is coming from... When Flash beats a zerg w/ 5 rax, nobody goes, "oh, he doesn't deserve that" Of course, he did, it's the opponent's fault for not defending the cheese.

Yeah, I guess you're right... but my point was that being a one trick pony (i.e cheesing every game) is not the right mentality you should have if you want to approach grandmasters. Edit: Also, if you can cheese THAT WELL, then you probably still deserve it for having mad micro.

Just keep laddering and don't worry about your league. If you can beat GM's, then you know you're good enough to be in GM, whether you get chosen or not.
|
nothing you do changes your chances. It's MMR, so play a lot at the start of the season but I'm pretty sure most spots are reserved regardless.
|
Ignore leagues completely, just don't think about that at all. Just play ladder as much as you find good for you personal improvement. The point is not to be GM, but to be good at the game.

Thinly veiled brag much?
I'm nowhere near GM so I can only offer you encouragement, ladder, ladder some more, practice, practice some more, and make another thinly veiled brag post once you get into GM! GL HF!

That should probably be your main focus, then. Remember to not queue for the next game until you've calmed down and have regained a clear perspective. Think about why you're upset. Is it because you made a mistake you could have easily avoided? If so then think about how you're going to fix it, and not let it happen next game. Is it because you lost focus mid-game? I'm not sure of a good fix for that, but keeping hydrated and eating healthy will be a great way to maintain focus. Hope that helps!

Do you want to get better, or have a high rank? Keep pressing "Find Match," keep analyzing your replays, and Blizzard will put you where they will.

go take GM. means nothing
I'm 1900+ masters too and i get raped by 1300 koreans
NA points are a false sense of achievement in my eyes

To actually try to answer your question, i would advice you to give alot of thought before everytime you hit the ladder button, and make sure you are well rested and with good concentration level, don't play when tired and take a break whenever you feel upset; this isn't the best way to practice and improve your skill, but it should keep your mmr at your highest possible current level, which means you have the best chance to get into gm! once you are in you can relax and start massgaming again
