I have been to Blizzcon a number of times (three thus far and I have my ticket for my fourth, thanks to Lysenko <3 <3 <3). However, each experience was drastically different! I plan to eventually recall all three, but I have decided to start with my first one.
Also, apologies if this blog is a little less well written than normal, I went to AFK Tavern for my normal after work beer and somehow got suckered into taking the "Challenge Accepted" drink by the bartenders. At least it was free? :'( My mouth still burns and I have yet to sober up.
ANYWAY, on to Blizzcon 2008...
Back in 2008, I was a freshman in college. I was young, enthusiastic and I had never been to a gaming convention before. I had attended quite a number of anime conventions previously and figured a gaming convention would have a fairly similar atmosphere. I was wrong. Very, very wrong.
As with all anime conventions, I decided to make a costume. I had little experience of making costumes on my own at that point and no sewing machine to use, so I decided to make a costume that would reflect my WoW character and take very little sewing. I'll discuss the costume in more detail further on...
My plan for Blizzcon was rather... well, nonexistant. It is a two day convention in Anaheim, which is a mere 50 minute drive from my college. However, as a freshman, I didn't have my car at school, so I was without transportation on my own. After bribing an upperclassman, he promised me a ride to the convention, but said he could not provide a return trip. I figured getting there was good enough and made no other plans. Afterall, no one I knew was going and I decided I could get back to college on my own (I had just become an "adult" and was sure I could take care of myself!).
Thus, when Blizzcon came around, I jumped on the back of my friend's motorcycle and clung to him for the 50 minute drive. Unfortunately, it was a ridiculously windy day and I weight slightly more than a large leaf, so I was almost torn off of the motorcycle numerous times during the journey. I almost cried out of fear (and I rarely, rarely cry) during that trip. About half an hour into it, I decided there was a decent chance I was going to die, and just clung as tightly to my friend as I could while trying to be as small, streamline and motionless as possible.
After what seemed like an eternity, my buddy dropped me off in front of the Anaheim Convention Center and I dashed off to get my name tag and enter Blizzcon!
I had assumed Blizzcon would be much like an anime convention, full of natural light, costumes and people so social that they would randomly run up to strangers and hug them. Instead, I found myself in a crowd of people all wearing various black t-shirts and jeans that seemed to want nothing more than to be alone. They formed perfectly into a large black mass in the halls of Blizzcon, which were darker than most of Doom 3's levels.
Regardless of the unexpected atmosphere, I decided I would still change into my costume. My costume made me stick out like a sore thumb in so many ways. I had decided to go for the simplest feral druid costume I could hand sew at the time, which turned out to be cat form. Now, my druid is a night elf and, back in 2008, all night elf druids had the same cat form, which was a large purple cat. Therefore, I made a fairly skimpy purple cat outfit.
You may think that nerds were bothering me left and right because of my obvious lack of clothing. However, it was like I had put on some sort of anti-social spray and everyone completed avoided me! I thought Blizzcon would be a super social event where people where talking to each other left and right, but, regardless if that was the case for others, I felt like I had a restriction zone in a ten foot radius around me.
I wandered around the convention, timidly looking for free goods and information on Wrath of the Lich King when a guy approached me. It turns out he was an employee of Blizzard. He was very kind, easy to talk to and somewhat flirtatious. After being completely ignored by the rest of Blizzcon, I welcomed this probably a little more than I should have. He let me wander around backstage and he encouraged me to take a few shots of rum that he had stashed in his car. I was completely intimidated and not worried at all about some random guy trying to give me booze (oh, the innocence). When I expressed I was worried about finding a place to say, he mentioned he had some friends staying at a local hotel. We went over there and I had a few beers with his friends that were quite like the rest of Blizzcon in terms of talking to me.
Eventually, I was offered an uncomfortable spot on their floor and a prospect of a towel for a blanket. The guy also mentioned I could crash at his place, so I had a debate with myself. I finally determined that I could probably kick his butt if he tried anything (or maybe just the alcohol thought I could) and went back to his place to crash. After fending off a few attempts from him, I actually got in quite a peaceful nights rest and was awoken with breakfast being made for me!
He dropped me back off at Blizzcon and left to do his Blizzardly duties while I continued to wander around. As the day progressed, I realized I should probably find a ride home, so I made a sign "WTB port to Claremont" and stood outside of the convention. About an hour and a hundred really odd looks later, some mid-forties guy from the convention approached me and offered me a ride home. I gratefully accepted it and hopped into his car.
I kept a close eye on the road signs to make sure we were heading in the right direction and he drove me back to school. Before we got there, he said, "I just want to ask for one favor, though... eat dinner with me."
I accepted the request fairly confused and slightly nervous, but then he treated me to a Denny's meal just a few block from my school, not once hitting on me or making any odd moves. Afterwards, he thanked me for the company and drove off.

So, that is the story of my first Blizzcon. Admittedly, while I played some games and all of that jazz, the parts that I most remember is that I somehow got there on the back of a motorcycle without money, a plan to get home or a place to stay, and made it back without getting raped or murdered.
i don't understand, how is that 'druid cosplay'? just looks like a trashy outfit. in edmonton that's the sort of thing you'd see on a creature wandering 118th after midnight

Could be the people who go to Blizzcon are timid by nature. I think starcraft 2 players are really social around their friends, but many aren't as social around girls?
This is just my guess after taking a Starcraft Course one summer and seeing the class, and after going to a few Starcraft events.

Sometimes the outside world is too harsh for Pandain. Sometimes the heat gets to him. Three times he has been forced to find shelter in the car of a complete stranger to get home XD.
The world's a nice place, and you can tell if someone is a bit creepy.

It's true. It's pretty easy to read people, especially when they're doing favors for you!
Also, people love helping others out, so you'd be surprised how many people are willing to lend a hand to complete strangers!

1) It was a story about how young and dumb I was at my first Blizzcon.
2) It was the only time in my life I had ever done such a thing.
3) I don't think it was cool, but I think you overreacted, so I trolled you. Herp. Balls of steel. Derp.
4) The only time I was at risk was crashing at my newly made friend's place and four other people knew I was there.
5) During the drive, I had my phone in my hand at all times and watched to make sure we were going to the right place. If we weren't, I could have called 911 or done something else WELL before he could do anything without crashing the car.
6) Stop with this whole "didn't parents ever..." thing. Duh, common knowledge. It's also common knowledge than teenagers are dumb and think they are invincible. Never in my blog did I state it was a good idea and, in fact, at the end, I noted how remarkable it was that I wasn't raped or murdered.

In all fairness, I think it's a bit different for girls than for guys. Not that I am entirely disagreeing or anything. Dangerous weirdos definitely do exist, just not very commonly.
I often wonder how characters like this come about; was there a board meeting where they decided it should be a dog instead of a person? Did someone sit down and said,

Especially since it was Blizzcon. I couldn't imagine someone who would go to Blizzcon would have some kind of willpower to actually hurt someone.

Youd have to be really really naive to think that just because you are at blizzcon, everyone is a good person and trust worthy. Especially when you are in a whoreish outfit...i mean costume... and broadcasting that you are by yourself.
Maybe if people were more "cynical" there would be a lot less rape and abusr in the world.
And i dont think Conan was reffering to rape (or worse) as things that dont turn out exactly like they should when talking about the consequences of "cynicism" in this case

People are hypersensitive about perceived risk of associating with strangers. I have a friend from my college class who, when she was 18, hitchhiked all the way up and down the West Coast. Now if you want to shake your head at someone who may have actually been taking a risk with her life, she'd be a better subject.

Many of today's parents think it's wrong to let their kids leave the house alone before they're 16 or something like that, because of the incredibly tiny handful of stranger child abductions in a nation of 300+ million people. Wouldn't hurt to have the pendulum swing the other direction for a bit so that we don't wind up with a nation of distrustful shut-ins.
Needless to say, I wasn't raised like that.
As for Riku's story, there's no way that the point to that story was "look at how cool I am for taking all these risks." It was more like "I can't believe how bad my planning was at 18, good thing it all worked out." Who doesn't have these stories? Everyone I know does, because 18-year-olds aren't that good at perceiving the consequences of their choices.

As an idea I've spent my entire childhood with a key around my neck playing outside with friends. Boys and girls alike. And the worst that I've heard happen with my groups of friends was someone falling from a tree on their head. Luckily minimal damage. The outside is not some evil place filled with people with violent stuff on their mind.
I might sound like an old grandpa, but I strongly disapprove of attention... girls.
On the feminine side, it's a ridiculous craving for recognition and a serious lack of affective independence. I was raised by a single mom and all the guys I met as a kid were assholes (even my dad left when I was born). This gave me a lot of respect for women in general, and some hate towards men. But I truly admired my mother's strenght. She was a solid rock and kept on going even though she had me when she was 21 and even though we were in a crappy neighbourhood, in a crappy country. Now, girls like Riku temper this admiration a bit. It does balance my preferences, though. I actually was very cold and mean with my current GF, because she had that sort of personnality, but more shy though. I kind of forgave her when I started realizing the reasons behind her attitude. And she changed, too.
On the masculine side... well, what can I say. Men are pigs. No self-respect whatsoever. No dignity at all. The girl is passed-out drunk? They'll have their way. The girl is awake and they're too intimidated to make a move? They'll buy her dinner, food, pay her drinks, presents, in hopes for sex but they'll never get anything. And the girl knows but uses their weakness.

I dunno what the child psychological studies on information retention say about these kinds of things, but it's definitely commonly thought that kids need to be entertained at the same time as they are informed. Most kids books (educational or otherwise) feature animals. I think the idea is that a lesson is more memorable if you can attach it to a character.

Your argument is absolutely stupid. Playing outside with a group of friends is different from going to a place you are unfamiliar with dressed like a las vegas prostitue with no means of trasportation. On top of that, you have no friends and start craving the attention of strangers so much that you agree to take shots with a some random guy and then stay at his place. Because that isnt enough of being an idiot, you accept a ride from some 40yr old dude even though you are fully aware that the possibility of him abducting you and doing terrible things to you.

I remember back in high school I was with my family in florida visiting my grandmother, and I knew this really good friend of mine from the internet (I had been talking to him, playing counter strike with him, and making 3d collaborative artwork with him for years) lived in florida. I remember my parents didn't want me to go visit him cause he might be some online predator or some shit, but I was like fuck it and took a greyhound bus to go visit him (was like a 2 hour trip iirc). When I got off the bus I was in a pretty shitty neighborhood (not to be racist but I don't think I saw a single white person throughout my entire trip LOL), everything was all torn up and all I could hear was the mix of shitty rap music being blared from every car at obnoxious volumes. Cars were left unlocked with open windows and shit was broken down all over the place.
It ended up turning out fine though, his sister drove me to their place and we hung out, smoked ganja and played counter strike. I got back fine and overall it was a fun trip with no issues, but looking back I completely trusted some people I didn't really know in a less-than-optimal environment which probably wasn't too smart lol

Kind of what I was thinking. My absolute favorite adventure included me having all my stuff stolen and almost being stranded in a remote Moroccan town in the Sahara, and it was fucking awesome. I guess there are those who deal with with crises and those who don't.

I somewhat agree. Its kinda ridiculous to single out females replying here when their opinions are the same as those of many others in this thread. If you don't think Haemonculus has tried to hide her gender on these forums, then you're completely blind. Perhaps she had good reason to, but you can see how judgmental she became about Riku's story. Her reply was a defense of Nevergg's continually silly posts and never once did she ask for details such as whether Riku actually had things to defend herself or if she was dressed like that the entire weekend. She jumped straight on the "you should've been raped for doing that" bandwagon. And that's what the cries of "attention whore" are about. People are trying to be themselves and if they happen to be female, we decry them for that. Either they dress racy so they're asking to be raped or they talk about themselves so they deserve to be mocked. These are all just rationalized justifications to demean someone for openly being feminine. Please.

I played Reppelz, a free MMORPG when I was a bit younger, for a short period of time. At first, people thought I was a female, given my nick at the time. They would act friendly and try to give me random stuff, follow me and whatnot. Then I'd say, "Hey, you know I'm a dude right?" And they'd leave.
So it seems that those seeking some sort of equality are those hiding the fact that they are females, until the gamers crowd looses some testosterone levels. Those who don't mind the extra attention they receive tend to go as far as providing proof, and grounds for fantasies.

There is some sort of jealousy coming from girls who conceal theur gender I guess, but it's the same kind of jealousy you get when you try to respect the environment and ride a bike when a friend passes by, speeding in his car. You're jealous and full of disapproval. Thus the "spicy" reaction.
And it becomes a debate because it goes beyond just this thread, it's not even about Riku, but about men and women relationships in particular environments such as the Net in general or gaming circles. It's also a changing situation and should be thought about. "Internet whores" are an interesting and IMO revealing phenomenon that cannot be denied. Even the name, "whores", indicates pretty well where we stand right now.
Thus my respect and admiration for girls who "conceal" their gender on the net, genuinly looking for more equality.

I have complete respect for haemonculus as well, and the way she conducts herself here and irl. Again, I'm basing my perceptions on personal experience of how females often judge other females. Stereotyping? A bit, sure. Again, as I said above: I apply it when I see it. I got that vibe from NeverGG's and haemonculus's posts. I did not get it from hazelynut's post. Therefore I can apply the stereotype that I've personally witnessed hundreds of times IRL to this situation to those two, but not hazelynut. I fail to see where I'm making an error by "applying a stereotype" AFTER they have already lived up to it?!?

Indeed. And many of these posts get extra sympathy for the sad reason that sex and relationships is terra incognita for a big chunk of the TL crowd.

Meh, I don't think anyone thinks they're genuinely "terrified of showing anyone that they're female", but it is definitely the cattiness thing that women have for another women doing something that can be competitive in terms of getting male attention, namely, appearance.
I've seen this SO often with my wife, her girlfriends, etc. etc. it's just funny to see it prevalent online too.
I honestly only kept reading this thread for the drama that was obviously coming from clashing females and I wasn't disappointed.

Perhaps she had good reason to, but you can see how judgmental she became about Riku's story. Her reply was a defense of Nevergg's continually silly posts and never once did she ask for details such as whether Riku actually had things to defend herself or if she was dressed like that the entire weekend. She jumped straight on the "you should've been raped for doing that" bandwagon. And that's what the cries of "attention whore" are about. People are trying to be themselves and if they happen to be female, we decry them for that. Either they dress racy so they're asking to be raped or they talk about themselves so they deserve to be mocked. These are all just rationalized justifications to demean someone for openly being feminine. Please.

Do you know how many girls have posted in this thread? And I'm specifically only talking about two of them. If Susie or Smix posted, they certainly wouldn't fall in that category. We don't hide that we're guys. We go around posting in threads about whether we piss in the shower or if our dick has ever touched the water while sitting. There's no mistaking what we are. And I don't care if people choose to hide their identity or not but to me, those two posts read like people who resent someone that doesn't care about anonymity.

I still don't understand why everything a girl does on the internet instantly becomes attention whoring. There have been more 'unsightly' pics of males on TL and it's not like there have been controversial stories with males either.
Why do some people accuse other people of posting a blog for attention? Is this like a new discovery? I was unaware that some people post blogs hoping that no one reads them and no one replies to them but some people here make it seem like that should be the correct way to blog, no?

Online posting habits, writing style and experience(s) can give clues about a person's personality and character. I hear there's a great game called Mafia that some of us like to play online here.
With that said, I can see why some of the things Riku says could lead others to jump to those conclusions or rub people the wrong way. We will always judge others regardless of the medium. Even if you aren't aware of it.
Too bad much is lost over the internet. It's one of the worst mediums to communicate your ideas. One reason I don't text, use facebook or twitter for that matter. If I want to talk to someone I'll meet them somewhere. I digress.
Let's revisit the notion of judging and first impressions. This isn't some new phenomena. Men do it just as much as women; although, our protocols are slightly different though. Considering very few women post on these forums... I find myself repeating the same question! What the hell did you expect? These scenarios will stick out like a sore thumb.

Also, to comment about why the nerdy attendants of Blizzcon don't talk to you is simply (well i had a gf during the past 3 blizzcons so I guess this is just my pretty accurate assumption.) because they don't want you to think they are one of "those nerdy creepy guys who hit on me just cause im the cute girl at the convention.
People dont wanna be those creepy guys who hit on you,etc. because everyone assumes that you are getting hit on by super nerdy guys every 10 feet, and dont want to be one of those creepers.

I am inclined to agree with this. Going through something like this is not at all as dangerous as certain people are trying to make it out to be. If a girl is walking alone at night in a shady area or in a country where you might not be as safe as you are in the west, and gets approached by a group of thug looking men "Ey girl want to crash at our place" it might not be a great idea to do so, but if you meet someone in a more regular environment, spend some time with them and it turns out you could use a place to stay and whoever you have met is able to supply this. If you have at all any trust in your people skills to be able to tell who is likely to be a rapist or not, the chances of anything bad happening are fairly slim. I am pretty sure the most life threatening she went through with that night was the driving in a car, not hanging out with a stranger.
I have offered both males and females to crash at my place, and have crashed at both male and females places, many of which i met the same night, and no rape or murder or anything else of this nature has gone down yet.
Edit: I am not going to complain about Riku's uh.. Posting style, as it does not bother me, if I dont want to read her threads I can just skip them. But one thing I find interesting and worth pointing out, and have seen the same phenomena very prevalent in other people being accused of attention whoring and the like, is that somewhere between 75%-90% of here posts are made in her own threads. (And she has a reasonable amount of them) Pretty sure this ratio is very very very very inflated compared to the average teamliquider. Thats ok though we can't all be the same! ^_^
